11.15.14 | I though Snowpiercer started out very strong: the setting, and everything becoming stranger and stranger while they moved further through the train. But then the story kinda fell flat and all the mystery disappeared. I basically have the same complaint about Under The Skin: I love the the first part of the film and the cinematography in general, but the last part isn't able to live up to what the build up seemed to promise. |
DrGonzo1937
11.15.14 | Under the Skin was so disappointing.
I watched Snowpiercer a couple of nights ago, great film. To all that haven't seen many of Bong Joon-ho films, watch Memories of Murder; probably my all time favourite detective thriller -- next to Se7en. |

11.16.14 | i watched snowpiercer last night, had never heard of it before and now theres a list about it here? what a pleasant coincidence.
i thought the action sequences were brilliant as well as the overall plot and style/setting and atmosphere
the dialogue however sucked ass at some points and i thought some of the acting was naff (but not terrible overall) . 7/10
|
DrGonzo1937
11.16.14 | Mother is cool. I think Ho Bong's best by far is Memories of Murder though. |
TheBarber
11.16.14 | yep come to think of it Memories of Murder shares first place with Mother. Korean Cinema kicks ass currently with dark humor gods like Jee-Woon and Park-Chan Wook, finally gonna watch Sympathy For Mr.Vengeance tonight, the two other flicks from the Vengeance Triology ruled soo far so can't wait |

11.17.14 | snowpiercer was a little disappointing given the guy's resume; didn't hate it by any means though
instellerar was a little disappointing as well; I wasn't expecting a masterpiece, and it was visually cool for the most part, but I wouldn't put it at the top of Nolan's list... the characters were great but the pacing was a little off, and some of the dialogue was ehhh
blue ruin is the only movie that's stood out as spectacular / hasn't let me down... I guess grand budapest, as well
though I can't wait to see nightcrawler and foxcatcher

SgtShock
11.18.14 | I'm not sure how ethnocentrism plays a role in this. Let me repeat. The movie came out in my country in
2014. I consider it my favorite movie of 2014 because that is the year it was released to me. If a person
from another country had the movie drop a later or earlier year, I would not see a problem (or call them a
close-minded idiot) because they said it was their favorite movie of that year. I'm astonished at how
volatile you are over such a mundane thing. Online disinhibition is a thing, though. I encourage you to
remember there are human beings on the other side of the screen you're looking at. |

|
Intothepit
11.18.14 | So calling you a close minded idiot(which isn't what I did) is a volatile comment? I don't think you're using the word "volatile" correctly.
And Birdman is the best picture of the year, unless Foxcatcher is all they are building it up to be. |
SgtShock
11.18.14 | Really? Let's read this again.
"Snowpiercer came out in 2013."
"It came out in the U.S. in 2014. I live in the U.S. Therefore, it is my favorite movie of 2014 (so far)."
"I'm in the US as well, yet I'm not a close minded idiot who believes America is the be all-end all."
That's the context in which you wrote that comment. Who exactly are you referring to here? Obviously me, because you responded in dialogue with my statement (by saying "I live in the U.S. as well". Now that we've assessed your comment was directed at me, let's move on to your statement about ethnocentrism.
Are there any perceivable displays of America-flavored ethnocentrism in this thread you were referring to instead? I don't see any. You've identified and insulted an alleged group of people who you deem close-minded idiots and lumped me in with them. While your insult was not direct, it was implicit and most certainly was meant to include me. I'm not sure who you're trying to fool here.
Let's continue on to whether or not your comment could be considered volatile. Well, first of all, it's an unprovoked insult to someone you don't even know based on something as trivial as movie release dates. I would consider that mean-spirited and cruel. Please see the SputnikMusic agreement I'm pasting below:
"By agreeing to these rules, you warrant that you will not post any messages that are obscene, vulgar, sexually-oriented, ***hateful***, threatening, or otherwise violative of any laws."
As for the term "volatile", words are, of course, used to everyone's own taste and preference. However, if you examine literature that covers hateful online speech, you'll find that they use words of the same nature as the one I have chosen.

You're wasting your time
Also (and I say this while admitting that this is a pointless argument), Snowpiercer is a 2013 release by anyone's standards. It's a South Korean movie and it was released there that year, and played in overseas festivals before the end of the year |

Intothepit
11.18.14 | Boom, roasted? Really? You are part of the reason everyone outside ofthe US thinks we are all self-centered morons, so thanks for perpetuating the stereotype. Because the movie was released in 2013, it is a 2013 release. By your standards, I could say The Godfather is my favorite movie of 2014 if I just saw it this year for the first time. |
SgtShock
11.18.14 | Was the godfather released for the first time in theaters in the United States during the year of 2014? Then no, you could not consider it your favorite movie of 2014 by my standards. |

11.18.14 | Interstellar & Gone Girl pretty easily. I still need to watch Boyhood and Nightcrawler tho. |
Intothepit
11.18.14 | Actually, yes I can, because you're basically choosing when a film is released to the public. I guess you'll say the Babadook is a 2014 film too, huh? |
DrGonzo1937
11.18.14 | Gone Girl was great. |
SgtShock
11.18.14 | Let it go, man. It's really not a big deal. Movie reviewers and journalists do this all the time (see links). Go find something else to gripe about :P
Also, I wasn't that impressed with interstellar. Had some great moments though. |

11.19.14 | "Was the godfather released for the first time in theaters in the United States during the year of 2014? Then no, you could not consider it your favorite movie of 2014 by my standards."
But who cares about defining it by its US release when it's not a US film. And the movie doesn't care about your standards dude |
SgtShock
11.19.14 | The "movie" doesn't have feelings, one way or another. I understand it was released elsewhere in 2013. It was released in theaters, in my country, in 2014. I'm gonna put it on my 2014 list like so many other movie reviewers will and have because that was the context it was presented to us in. I didn't live in Korea in 2013, not did I go to any movie festivals. It makes more sense from an evaluative perspective to include it in this year's movies. I'd link you more examples of reviewers who have done the same as I, but I've noticed you've ignore the ones I've already posted. You know what, I'll do it anyways. I'm probably wasting digital ink her because I seem to be repeating myself here a lot but I'll do it again, just for you |

11.19.14 | If you want to talk about the film ten do so, a fair few of us commented and nobody replied to such comments
SPOILERS SPOILERS SPOILERS: i thought the film had a lot of potential but gell flat at a few pivotal moments, such as the part where the main character tells the story of him eating others o stay alive and how babies taste best. The problem was that he was such a boring character up until tha point so the revelation meant nothin to me. Yeah it emphasised the supposed hardships twy had gone through and justified his and their jate for the front passengers but it wasnt a hertbreaking emoional moment because there had been nothing previous that made me give a shit about wjay sort of a person he was . He was just a generic dude
Sorry for numerous spelling mostakes, on a shitty phone. Would explin my point better if i was at home |
SgtShock
11.19.14 | *spoilers begin* I do agree with that. He kinda was just the headstrong leader type. I get the feeling the film focused so much on characters being defined through action that when we get into the heavy exposition it's a jarring transition. However, how about that scene where his friend is held hostage and he still goes for the kooky lady? That was a pretty interesting scene to me that kind of defined the character outside of a archetypical "good-guy action hero". |
Mort.
11.19.14 | "However, how about that scene where his friend is held hostage and he still goes for the kooky lady? That was a pretty interesting scene to me that kind of defined the character outside of a archetypical "good-guy action hero"
yeah i definitely agree, that was a very good character defining moment. And the fact that the baby he talks about wanting to eat grew up to be his second in command was a very good moment in that part of dialogue but like i said previously, i think it could of been better.
in fact really i think the dialogue and the lack of an interesting lead where my only issues with this film. the design and concept was very interesting, aswell as the action scenes. The idea of a revolution being fought through carriages was an interesting metaphor for the society they were in aswell as a useful action sequence setting. I mean, they had to keep the idea of fights in a train fresh each time and i think the ways they did it were quite good eg the tunnel bit, the almost medieval warfare style thing they had going on with two side lined up in combat, the spa scene
actually one last gripe i have is that steam room or whatever scene could of been so tense but wasnt, and i think the movie would of really benefited from it. All those closed compartments a foggy room could of made for some interesting visuals and a tense fight scene but i dont think the setting was used to that great effect seeming as all i remember them doing is having characters charge the villian out of their hiding spots. |
SgtShock
11.19.14 | Shit, yeah, you're right about the spa room. I feel like if that fight took place in a movie like The Raid it would have been wayyy more interesting. |
