Didn't Care For 2014 - Just 5 Albums.

Didn't pay too much attention to music released this year (only what my fav artists were doing), thus just 5 sweet records this time, instead of a top 10/20/50/100/whatever.

Belighted

Gavin Harrison (Porcupine Tree) and Danny Cavanagh (Anathema) praised this band, a lot. And they weren't wrong. What this Russian duo has done is not neoclassical music with progressive rock, no - it's a true fusion of the genres. And the result is gorgeous. The fragile, sweet voice of the readhead singer and the sweet piano of his parter, are out of this world, like a warm dream. Go and listen to it.

Explorations

This is a wonderful piece Jordan (Dream Theater's keyboardist) wrote long time ago, and finally recorded it with a real orchestra. It's classical, but it also has some really interesting progressive elements. It's beautiful, but also fun. And groovy. I don't really know how this has been so ignored.

Dark and beautiful. Post-rock with small references to the band's old black metal past. Wonderful piece of art.

Lun

Since I discovered David Maxim Micic's work, I've fallen in love with his 7-strings guitars, and his smart approach on math rock and djent. But he also had a passion for pop. And yes, his most popular band, that one with the ugly name, is exactly that. Djent with female pop vocals. But, boy, it works. It damn, fucking works. I can only compare it with Devin Townsned's Addicted. But they are two completely different (yet awesome) beasts.

Distant Satellites

I really didn't hope for the band to surpass what they did with Weather Systems, their masterpiece (at least one of my fav albums ever). And they really didn't. But it doesn't matter. Distant Satellites is another thing, an album that features Anathema's modern atmospheric songwriting with a dark, yet warm atmosphere, reminiscent of their old work. And some electronic elements. These guys (and gal) are unstoppable.
