Kingdok's 2014
Didn't hear a huge amount of music this year, but some of it was fantastic. |
1 | | Dog Fashion Disco Sweet Nothings
A great year for comeback news (bursting at the seams for FNM!), DFD pick up where Polkadot Cadaver left off with a far superior album to Last Call In Jonestown.
Best track: Tastes So Sweet |
2 | | Ideamen Schemata
Piano-driven alternative rock with heavy edges, luscious vocal harmonies and some seriously catchy songwriting abilities on display.
Best track: Running Home |
3 | | Mongol Horde Mongol Horde
Amazing to hear Frank Turner returning to his hardcore roots, and in places surpassing the heady heights of Million Dead.
Best track: Casual Threats From The Weekend Hardmen |
4 | | Kerbdog Congregation
Great sounding live album, featuring the whole of On The Turn, and the fact that these guys are back making music after 17 years is amazing. New track Electricity puts a huge grin on my face for hours.
Best Track: Electricity |
5 | | Killer Be Killed Killer Be Killed
A "supergroup" that works on its own merits. Moments of thrash, math and hardcore combine well to create a crushingly heavy whole.
Best track; Snakes of Jehovah |
6 | | BABYMETAL BABYMETAL
Still don't know what to make of this bubblegum J-pop thrash/tech metal mash up, just know that it sounds unlike any other album anywhere!
Best track: Catch Me If You Can |
7 | | Future Funk Squad Darker Days
Haven't listened to much dance music for a while, but FFS' dark cinematic soundscapes layered over breakbeats was supremely effective.
Best track: The Hunted |
8 | | Passenger (UK) Whispers
Pasenger is one of the best story-telling lyricists around, and his folksy-edged acoustic rock is very affecting.
Best track: Scare Away The Dark |
9 | | Marmozets The Weird and Wonderful Marmozets
Wanted this to be a lot better than it is. Has got a little too much filler, however it also features a good number of barnstorming tunes.
Best track: Vibetech |
