01.07.15 | Other disappointments for me include (though I know most people would disagree):
Fury, Interstellar, Big Hero 6, Gone Girl, Neighbors, The Grand Budapest Hotel, Dear White People, Transformers: Age of Extinction, Captain America: The Winter Solider, Guardians of the Galaxy and Exodus: Gods and Kings.
What are some of your disappointments from 2014? |
thacoconut94
01.07.15 | Amazing spider man 2 for definite, fucking first one was pish too. |
chinesewhispers
01.07.15 | Interstellar was the biggest by far. Thought it was trash |
BeneaththeDarkOcean
01.07.15 | @coconut Yeah, the first one wasn't that good either, though it did have more chemistry between Garfield and Stone, so there's that
@chinese Interstellar I thought was really good at first, but then I started to pick it apart afterward and it just didn't add up. Too many plot holes, too many cheesy moments, etc. (that fucking Hathaway speech, ugh) |
thacoconut94
01.07.15 | I've heard that sex tape, let's be cops and ride along are awful |
thacoconut94
01.07.15 | Ouija was poor, Annabelle however I felt was really good |
chinesewhispers
01.07.15 | @Beneath Man I just thought the whole thing was a mess, I could seriously talk about all my issues with it for hours. Agreed on the plot holes and cringeworthy melodrama, I get that it was ambitious but I felt like it failed on every other front |

why don't you just say "everything released this year" |
IronGiant
01.07.15 | Guardians of the Galaxy was fantastic what are you smoking |
Faraudo
01.07.15 | How can you expect anything from a Transformers movie directed by Michael Bay? That's the biggest question around here. |
Faraudo
01.07.15 | PD: Gone Girl, Captain America 2, Guardians of the Galaxy and Interstellar rock. |
thacoconut94
01.07.15 | Transformers is great I've never got anyone's issue. Like who's walking in to a transformers movie expecting anything more or less than fighting, explosions, hot girls and slight humour. |
mifzal
01.07.15 | but it was nice to see Jolie in a more feminine role, in most film she's either a tomboy or a lesbian...still whatever |
ScarlettPimpernail
01.07.15 | Michael bays humor sucks though |
Underflow
01.07.15 | Captain America, Guardians of the Galaxy, and Interstellar all ruled. |
BeneaththeDarkOcean
01.07.15 | Re: Transformers, I was hoping Bay would've learned his lessons dealing with the franchise by now, but he just went 100 ft. deeper into the rabbit hole. He truly is one of the worst directors ever.
@someguest, I figured someone would say that when I made this list. Here's my explanations for each:
1. Fury - basically war porn, I don't endorse movies like that
2. Interstellar - like I said before, too many plot holes and cheesy moments, not nearly as good as Inception or TDK, Nolan's been on a downward spiral since TDKR
3. Big Hero 6 - Disney globalization at its finest
4. Gone Girl - One of the most sexist films I've ever seen (see my other list for my problems with it)
5. Neighbors - fuck Seth Rogen and his bro-comedies, see Ann Hornaday's WashPost article for my opinions on that
6. The Grand Budapest Hotel - actually really enjoyed this one, but labeled it disappointing since it didn't quite reach the heights of Moonrise Kingdom
7. Dear White People - also really good, but skirted by some issues I thought needed to be addressed and the director was riding the coattails of Do the Right Thing a little too hard
8. Captain America: The Winter Soldier - the first Marvel movie I can say I truly didn't fully enjoy. It's become a formula by now, like most superhero movies. The third-act generic CGI action climax is so boring by now.
9. Guardians of the Galaxy - see above, but even more so. It had its moments of humor, but most of it felt forced IMO
10. Exodus: Gods and Kings - could've been a career revival for Ridley Scott, but it's just more over-CGI junk
Also, I should've added The Hobbit: The Battle of the Five Armies (really, the whole Hobbit trilogy fits here). Yet another movie that would've benefited from more character development and less computer graphics (I'm starting to sound like a broken record, I know). |

01.07.15 | don't know why people would go in to ASM2 with high hopes after the first one, but i thought it kicked ass. the music was so much better than ASM1, dane dehaan was killer as always, and dat times square scene was so fucking good. |

01.07.15 | "Gone Girl - One of the most sexist films I've ever seen (see my other list for my problems with it)"
oh, so portraying a woman like that in film is sexist, but portray a man as such isn't? the fact is there are as many (hell, probably even more) crazy women as there are crazy men, and the film (and book) explored this theme. |
someguest
01.07.15 | also thanks for reminding me I have The Place Beyond The Pines on my DVR to finish |
DoctorDoom
01.07.15 | I left Gone Girl feeling as if my brain was coming out of my ears. Not sure if that makes it good or bad. |
someguest
01.07.15 | Gone Girl was worth it alone for the scene of homicidal orgasm. I felt so disgusted yet I couldn't look away. |

01.07.15 | R.I.P. NPH |

01.07.15 | rip in peace |
BeneaththeDarkOcean
01.07.15 | @someguest, when did I ever say portraying a man as such isn't sexist? and when did I ever say the way they portrayed the woman was what I thought was sexist? presumptuous on both counts, my good sir. I knew there are crazy people out there like that, my issue with the film was that the entire message of it boils down to "bitches be crazy", which is not something I think a cultural product of any sort should endorse. |
BeneaththeDarkOcean
01.07.15 | @Ted, "the music was so much better than ASM1" so Hans Zimmer dubstep is preferable to emotional, melodic, provocative, otherworldly James Horner? Sounds legit. |
someguest
01.07.15 | in that case you shouldn't have been so general and explained yourself because with sweeping statements comes more sweeping statements. The message of the film was that. She's a bitch, and she's crazy. It never claimed any other of the 'bitches' were crazy though, just her. Her sex has nothing to do with mental state.
A more realistic view of the film is not to take everything at face value, or how things are portrayed in the media. |
ArsMoriendi
01.07.15 | Only saw 1, mainly because it was on TV. Yeah it was pretty awful.
You should watch Inherent Vice, it's a good new movie. |
Kman418
01.07.15 | actually this is probably one of the best years for movies i can think of in recent memory its ur own fault that you actually bother to go see stuff like teenage mutant ninja turtles and guardians of the galaxy bro
go watch blue ruin |
riffariffic7
01.07.15 | Surprised not to see Godzilla up here yet. That was the biggest pile of crap I've seen in a while.
They kill off their best character (and actor) before the final act and give us "main star material"
Aaron Taylor-Johnson instead. I kind of hated this film, Godzilla's in it for maybe 20 minutes out of
a two-hour (plus?) runtime, which is just insulting, and most of that screen-time is chewed away by
him either being covered in shadows or obscured by shaky-cam and/or underwater shots. I hate this
director (Gareth Evans), he made Monsters, which was good but highly overrated, and now, after a tame
and forgettable Godzilla film, he's suddenly going to be making a Star Wars film... just brilliant.
Can't wait to forgot about it like most of you seem to have forgotten about Godzilla (as I did before
I checked out a list of films that came out in 2014 and said "wow, that came out just last year and I
already forgot about it"). Pacific Rim was a far better film. |
someguest
01.07.15 | when has a Godzilla film ever been good |
TheSonomaDude
01.07.15 | Muppets From Space isn't even the worst Muppet movie. |
Kman418
01.07.15 | ok no lie though id be surprised if anything else this decade tops blue ruin for me |
riffariffic7
01.07.15 | Can't wait to see Blue Ruin and Inherent Vice. |
Shuyin
01.07.15 | i really wanted to like the new dracula movie, the adds were everywhere and although it all looked nice, i already knew that it was going to be just another studio cliche/CG abomination of a film |
Shuyin
01.07.15 | "when has a Godzilla film ever been good"
gojira, dont even try to say its bad because it IS good, end of story |
Gwyn.
01.07.15 | why would you go see tmnt |
gagnonov
01.07.15 | guardians of the galaxy was absolute shit
frank and boyhood were great.. i have yet to watch birdman, the babadook, whiplash and inherent vice though |
Kman418
01.07.15 | inherent vice was pretty incredible too yeah
the babadook also came out which is probably the best horror movie of the last 10 years (or at least like top 3 easily) |
BeneaththeDarkOcean
01.07.15 | Totally forgot and agree with Godzilla, that should've made the list for the reasons you mentioned. Still have yet to see Inherent Vice (I'm a little wary cause The Master left me cold even though I know most people loved it, I'm hoping PTA can redeem himself with this one), Frank and Boyhood look great. Birdman is my favorite film of the year, you MUST see it, try to catch it in theatres for the full cinematographic experience :D |
Gwyn.
01.07.15 | I just saw that scene on guardians of the galaxy when my dad was tryna watch it (he couldnt finish it lol) where the dude flies in space to that rupert holmes song or whatever and that was all i needed to know
i wanna go see whiplash |
riffariffic7
01.07.15 | Birdman, Whiplash and The Raid 2 are easily the top three best films I've seen all year-long. The Master was a difficult film for me to watch initially, I kind of nodded off the first-time I watched it, but I gave it another chance (since it was playing a lot on the Movie Network or whatever it's called) and ended up really enjoying it. I don't think I'd watch it again any time soon but watching it again made it really stick to me like glue and I can't get it out of my mind, it's very thought-provoking, especially at the end where they're giving Joaquin Phoenix's character all of the tests in-order to "change" him, and that smile which Phoenix gives at the end is priceless. He's absolutely brilliant in the film, probably should have won the Oscar that year, but I think his competition was Daniel Day-Lewis as Lincoln, and that was a great performance too despite the movie being a complete bore in my opinion, largely thanks to terrible and distracting performances from Sally Field and Joseph Gordon-Levitt; who is an actor I usually like a lot, but he felt very out of place in the film and I'm not sure why, maybe he's been in too much stuff recently and that's all. |
BeneaththeDarkOcean
01.07.15 | I thought Lincoln was really good when it came out, but it's not something I'm likely to revisit anytime soon. I do remember in the opening scene where Dane DeHaan or the other soldier's character says the phrase "shut up!" and I remember thinking, did they really say that phrase back then? It kinda took me out of the film for a moment. Day-Lewis was great though, completely inhabited the role. It'll be interesting to see what and who gets nominated this year at the Oscars. Maybe I should do a Sputnik Oscar Predictions list. :) |
TedSchmosby
01.07.15 | @Beneath, they really got the right fit with the music in ASM2. music can be great on it's own, but it has to fit the movie it's featured in, and the music in ASM2 really worked with the style they were going for. the score in ASM might have worked in the sam raimi movies, but i found it didn't mesh well with webb's film. |
riffariffic7
01.07.15 | I think that Michael Keaton will nab the Oscar for Best Actor in Birdman. I'm hoping that Birdman
sweeps the show, Edward Norton will probably win Best Supporting Actor because he's simply
phenomenal in the film, but I have a strong feeling it will win big in everything except Best
Picture, which will probably go to Boyhood. I haven't seen the film yet, but it seems like a film
that's catered to Academy voters and I expect it may also nab Best Director and Best Suppoting
Actress (maybe even Best Supporting Actor, which I'd be happy with as I've always loved Ethan Hawke,
I think he's a consistently excellent actor, really underrated and definitely deserving of an
Oscar). My predictions for the Oscars are as follows:
Best Picture nominations:
Birdman
Inherent Vice
Selma
A Most Violent Year
Interstellar
Wild
Gone Girl
Boyhood
Foxcatcher
Whiplash
Best Actor nominations (hopefully Andy Serkis can get nominated for Dawn of the Planet of the Apes):
Steve Carell for Foxcatcher
Michael Keaton for Birdman
Oscar Issac for A Most Violent Year
Eddie Redmayne for The Theory of Everything
David Oyelowo for Selma
Best Actress nominations:
Julianne Moore for Still Alice
Reece Witherspoon for Wild
Rosemund Pike for Gone Girl
Felicity Jones for The Theory of Everything
Gugu Mbatha-Raw for Beyond the Lights
Best Supporting Actor nominations:
Edward Norton for Birdman
Ethan Hawke for Boyhood
Channing Tatum for Foxcatcher
J.K. Simmons for Whiplash
Josh Brolin for Inherent Vice
Best Supporting Actress nominations:
Emma Stone for Birdman
Patricia Arquette for Boyhood
Jessica Chastain for A Most Violent Year
Tessa Thompson for Dear White People
Carmen Ejogo for Selma
Best Director nominations:
Alejandro González Iñárritu for Birdman
Christopher Nolan for Interstellar
J.C. Chandor for A Most Violent Year
Ava DuVernay for Selma
Richard Linklater for Boyhood |
riffariffic7
01.07.15 | Oh yeah, and Birdman MUST win for Best Cinematography. ;) |
chinesewhispers
01.07.15 | Boyhood has best picture and director in the bag
Birdman has best actor and cinematography |

01.07.15 | I think you're right, CW. Sorry that lists tough to read, guys. I put spaces in-between the lines, but
for some reason, when I went back to edit it, the list just turned into a wall of words. Really
annoying. This site's got so many problems that need fixing, a huge one to fix would be the log-in
pop-up which deletes your review if you press "Submit" and it cuts to the screen that asks for your
log-in info. I hate that so much, I would have had to rewrite my first review if I didn't (thankfully)
save it to my e-mail beforehand. The power of the internet is a wonderful thing indeed. |
