02.21.15 | sup, finally made a list that isn't drivel. i was initially gonna do small write ups for all of them but i got lazy, so i'll do them
individually on request if you think that'll help you decide which one to listen to . jazz recs are also welcome. |
Ryus
02.21.15 | cool! |

02.21.15 | liledman did it better |
Torontonian
02.21.15 | whoops, just realized i forgot one. |
SharkTooth
02.21.15 | If you're looking for recs try
Sonny Rollins-The Bridge(just as good as Saxophone Colossus imo)
Marcus Miller-Silver Rain
The Seatbelts-Cowboy Bebop OST(heavily recommend watching the show it's based off of) |
SharkTooth
02.21.15 | oh, and also try BADBADNOTGOOD-III |
wtferrothorn
02.21.15 | Flying Lotus some nice, jazzy hip-hop too. |
Valkyrion
02.21.15 | maybe
alice coltrane - Journey In Satchidananda
pharoah sanders - karma
both avant-garde but fairly accessible. karma is very similar to a love supreme |

02.21.15 | listen to this list

Valkyrion
02.21.15 | also i'd rather have "Lizard" from King crimson rather than Islands. latter is more classical-influenced than jazz-influenced |

02.21.15 | Great list dude, major props for 12. I personally disagree hard on 13 but Head Hunters was what got me into jazz so I'm a bit biased haha. I'm sure you've already checked them, but The Dave Brubeck Quartets 'Time Out' and Grant Greens 'Idle Moments' are some of my favorite jazz albums. That first one is an important part of jazz history, so really big recommendation if you haven't already listened
Seconding Shark's recs for Cowboy Bebop OSTs and The Bridge too. |
Torontonian
02.21.15 | thanks everyone, will check recs
@relinquished i agree, my list really isn't all great that but i guarantee there's at least one album off here you havne't heard so get to it. |
Torontonian
02.21.15 | @cometodaddy pretty sure time out was first jazz album to sell a million copies! historical indeed and thanks |

02.21.15 | guarantee failed I want my money back |
Onirium
02.21.15 | Great list, I think it does make for a good introduction to the genre. You seem to like prog and avant-garde in your jazz (props for including Islands by the way, it's probably in my top 3 KC and unjustifiably hated). There's a lot of good stuff of that kind, but here are just some albums I think you would really like:
Pat Metheny Group - The Way Up (contemporary, prog-tinted jazz with a strong emphasis on organic textures and improvisation)
The Dave Brubeck Quartet - Time Out (the classic cool jazz album, with an overlying theme of the use of uncommon time signatures)
Miles Davis - Bitches Brew (perhaps Davis' most experimental and interesting album in my opinion)
Tigran Hamasyan - Shadow Theater (contemporary proggy jazz again, although with Armenian folk influences adding a whole new dimension)
I think most of what is in this list will please you as well: http://www.sputnikmusic.com/list.php?memberid=1042401&listid=149587

02.21.15 | @pots thanks will check today
@friday just saw your comment, i've heard time out, its good but i honestly find it a lil overrated. Will check in a silent way |
Friday13th
02.21.15 | Yeah man, In a Silent Way is fantastic. I hear people say Time Out is overrated all the time. Whatevs. It has a lot of classical piano for people expecting straight jazz. It's also the most famous "white-man" jazz (even though the bass player is black), so some people assume it must be racist or something silly like that. I'm more into jazz with structure and I find it far more interesting and original then some Coltrane albums where he's noodling like a mad man for 40 minutes. That's just my taste. |
Torontonian
02.21.15 | Its all a matter of taste! Time out was the first jazz album ever to sell a million records. Check 9 you'd dig based off of
what you just said. Very classical-esque piano ,is immensely engrossing, album is almost all piano actually. |
DustyTill
02.21.15 | Bill Evans is definitely not smooth jazz. |
Torontonian
02.21.15 | ^that album is, you say that like all his albums are the same. |
Jethro42
02.21.15 | Excellent list, Torontonian. I'm listening to 34 atm.
I suggest you to try
Vital Information (jazz fusion with a lot of brass)
Scott Henderson (jazz fusion/blues leanings)
I second Pat Metheny
Have you considered Al Di Meola? |
DustyTill
02.21.15 | @Torontonian: Well, that album is definitely not smooth jazz. Kenny G is smooth jazz. This is just completely different. |
Friday13th
02.21.15 | Yeah, I like Bill Evan's Portrait so I'll have to check more from him. |
NorthernSkylark
02.21.15 | jizz(ash) |
Torontonian
02.21.15 | @dusty hehe i was just using the term broadly, maybe it isnt technically "smooth Jazz" but "smooth" is the adjective that comes to mind when i think of that album.
@Jethro Nice! 34 gets better every time i hear it, very underrated imo. And no i didn't consider it because i've never heard of them! i appreciate the recs. |
Jethro42
02.21.15 | Get
Al Di Meola - Elegant Gypsy
An amazing prog infused jazz fusion
I'll try 34 again to see if my rating could change. |
Torontonian
02.21.15 | ^thanks, i think at least a 4 would be suitable for that wyatt album. I also think you'd particularly enjoy 7 and 10 |
Veldin
02.21.15 | Amaing list . You named a Mars Volta song instead of the album name btw. Needs a John Zorn album on this list, too.
Electric Masada - At the Mountains of Madness |
Torontonian
02.21.15 | ^haha that explains it, get the two mixed up. thanks! |
Valkyrion
02.22.15 | it just came to mind but maybe Oscar peterson - Night train
nice and accessible bluesy jazz with some great piano playing |
Jethro42
02.22.15 | Thanks Torontonian, I'll check out 10, but 7 is not my kind of thing (according to what I've heard of them...kind of jazz rock, and I don't like the way they inject the rock into the equation). |
Jethro42
02.22.15 | I changed my mind for Dixie Dregs. Album offers great arrangements. I love the violin and of course the guitar playing. They don't only know how to jazz, but they also know how to funk and prog... |
Torontonian
02.22.15 | ^sweet
@pots cool stuff, i'm always interested in checking out jazz with more diversified influences. |
Snowdog808
02.22.15 | Killer list! I was just listening to 27, but I love 4 and various others on here as well. |
Snowdog808
02.22.15 | I would also add a Weather Report album and Return to Forever's Hymn of the Seventh Galaxy and Romantic Warrior. |
JamieTwort
02.22.15 | Nice list. 3 seems a rather odd inclusion though. |
Snowdog808
02.22.15 | 18 is awesome but I think Lizard might be jazzier. |
Torontonian
02.22.15 | @jamie I agree, but I see a lot of parallels between jazz and blues so why not hehe. I think u'd like 14 BTW
@snow thanks! I think I'd like |
Torontonian
02.22.15 | U'd like 17* |
Snowdog808
02.22.15 | Alright, I'll try it out. |
Ricochet
02.22.15 | The Real McCoy-McCoy Tyner |
Onirium
02.22.15 | The Köln Concert is quite possibly the most brilliant solo improvisational album out there. |
Muisc4Life26
02.22.15 | fantastic list needs a feature |
Ricochet
02.22.15 | this list needs Billie Holiday Sings, spinechilling album |
Royl123
02.22.15 | 4 and 6 are mind blowing… |
Snowdog808
02.22.15 | fantastic list needs a feature [2] |
Torontonian
02.23.15 | Thanks guys! Not sure if its feature worthy but glad u guys liked it. I got a ton of recs from it too haha |
