08.25.15 | Really though, all I know is the big pieces by the big composers, the list pretty much shows how entry level I am. Recs for lesser-known releases from the greats, or just underappreciated artists of any kind would be greatly appreciated |

08.25.15 | try these

08.25.15 | I can think of is Prokofiev's 'Scythian Suite', Shostakovich's String Quartets and Edvard Grieg's 'Peer Gynt' for stuff not on this list, all of which are pretty cool (if you like dark elements). Will be monitoring this list :3 |

08.25.15 | The big three of the Romantic era are my favorites -- Wagner, Berlioz, Liszt. I spent a good deal of my senior thesis on their influence on music criticism, which included each other's increasingly progressive and bombastic works. Start with Symphonie Fantastique and Tristan and Isolde / Die Walkure for something different and amazing. |

08.25.15 | Sweeet this is exactly what I was talking about, I've heard a handful of the recs and love the ones I know so I'll definitely get onto the rest. Thanks a heap so far guys |

08.25.15 | Schoenberg was a crazy man and a genius. If you like that, move boldly forward to Varese and Glass. |

08.25.15 | Dude listen to Bach. Seriously. Like all Bach
I mean maybe not but he has so many masterpieces - the cello suites, the violin sonatas and partitas, the well-tempered clavier books 1 and 2, the mass in b minor, the st. matthew passion, the cantatas, the goldberg variations, etc., etc., etc. the greatest composer who ever lived.
Haydn is wonderful as well. He wrote a ton of music and pretty well all of it is great. Dive in to his symphonies, string quartets, and piano sonatas.
Ditto with Beethoven.
Mozart's operas are far and away his best work. The Magic Flute, The Marriage of Figaro, Cosi Fan Tutte, and Don Giovanni (!!!!) are the best ones.
Be back with more in a bit... |

08.25.15 | Anything focused on cello is a godsend for me, his cello suites are brilliant. I've got the well-tempered clavier books tucked away somewhere, but I'll make a point of getting more. Big thanks for all the recs again guys, will be jamming and get back to you all |

08.25.15 | I'm a sucker for just about any violin concerto myself, Beethoven is a great place to start.

08.25.15 | http://www.sputnikmusic.com/album/194747/Paul-Hindemith-Sonata-for-viola--piano-in-F-major-Op.-11-4/
I'm pretty much a classical pleb as well, but I think Hindemith is regarded as one of the more important composers of the 20th century. This is the only work by him in the sput db, I think it's a mix of expressionism and romanticism. He would eventually compose in various experimental tonalities as well as in a contrapuntal style that's somewhat reminiscent of Beethoven. |

08.26.15 | Stravinsky and Arvo Part have been wild, thanks for those. Tristan and Isolde was gorgeous though I'll need to set aside some time to listen right through because jesus that's long. The Well-Tempered Clavier Books weren't really my thing though, as much as I love Bach's other works I just couldn't get behind them. Really appreciate all the recs though guys, I'll get into the headier stuff in a few days |
