dude...what were you thinking. |
ZombicidalMan
11.01.15 | earlier music is almost always shittier, especially EPs recorded in bedrooms and basements.
also, lol at the band name |
Gameofmetal
11.01.15 | idk that natural is the right word but it's a sorta common thing |

11.01.15 | A Snide Self-Deprecation |
Hurricanslash
11.01.15 | That's normal, because your ability to make better music and your ability to judge your own music increase with time, but not at the same time.
I'd post my five discogs on here, but I don't care to do that at the moment. |
wtferrothorn
11.01.15 | @Snide the split was called My Descent, Your Deprivation
You do know what deprecation means....right? |
worthlessscab
11.01.15 | like it while I make it. after that don't want to listen to it |
Trebor.
11.01.15 | I grow to hate pretty much everything I create
It just means you're getting better |
Iamthe Nightstars
11.01.15 | It's completely normal. There are a lot of songs I have written and recorded that I was really proud of at the time, but now looking back a lot of it seems kind of weak and immature because I keep growing as a musician and songwriter. There are also a lot my songs that I'm simply just tired of even though I still think they are quality songs. |
Judio!
11.01.15 | It's a normal thing yeah. I self-promoted the first LP I ever released because I was super proud of it at the time, and it's still my most rated album, but now I just think it's the worst thing ever. |
Jots
11.01.15 | plenty of musicians end up renouncing their creations. perhaps they think the quality blows, or they've grown into different people and believe their previous work presents them falsely. |
wwf
11.01.15 | I fall in and out of love with my own music all the time. Makes it annoying working on an album but it is what it is |
deathschool
11.01.15 | I don't know if hate is the right word, but if you stop striving to do better than you've done, you become complacent, and that's the death of any artist. |
Judio!
11.01.15 | "@Judio: What about it makes you feel that it's the worst thing ever?"
Umm idk honestly, probably because it was super rushed. I wanted to get the album out as quickly as I could do I rushed through making the songs and threw whatever music I made in a week onto the album without much thought at all so the result is just a complete mess. Also a lot of the songs on that album came out really dull, quiet and weak-sounding because I made every instrument too distorted. I immediately worked my hardest to fix all these problems on my second LP though so releasing a shit album was worth it I guess. |
Judio!

11.01.15 | I always feel the same way about writing, so maybe it transfers into music also. Like i'll be really happy with a article or short story I wrote but 2 months later I'll look at it and cringe and see mistakes and improvements to be made. It's probably a side effect of developing a skill, being able to reflect and critique your own work. Of course you could always revisit/remake your old tracks, just like I often go back and edit/revise my writing. |
OwMySnauze
11.01.15 | Seems to be a common thing, been to plenty of shows where bands get requests to play their older stuff and they just have this "don't care/uninterested" attitude about it. Seen statements over the years about bands saying they're not gonna play their older stuff because they basically don't like it anymore |
OwMySnauze
11.01.15 | Btw disappointed in the lack of "A Snide..." in the list title |

11.01.15 | @snide: I've cut an insane number of songs from my debut but lately I've actually been bringing some of the ones I cut back with a few relatively minor changes so I guess that's progress |

11.01.15 | Good move eliminating rap
I've recorded around 80ish songs and I'm solid on like 8 of them lol |
Rolling Girl
11.01.15 | I see as some kind of competitive strive in yourself. You want to see yourself improve instead of reaching your full potential too soon. So you subconsciously tell yourself that you can do better than before. |
Final Origin
11.01.15 | I get what you are saying Snide and I think its pretty normal as well. I look back at my first few albums and can spot quite a few weaknesses in terms of production and the general tracks themselves, so I tend not to go back to them as much as my recent songs. But, I see them as stepping stones towards creating my own sound and appreciate them for how it shows progression from when I started to record to now, its natural to improve the more you record and try out new ideas. |

11.01.15 | i hate my first EP so yea |
BAT
11.01.15 | i hate everything i write and never credit my actual name. |
laughingman22
11.02.15 | I usually do the opposite, I hate it when I first record the music, then love it about a year later |
Intothepit
11.02.15 | Maybe you should focus on one shitty project rather than multiple shitty projects. Automatic improvement. I mean, it will still be shitty, it just won't smell as bad. |
Graveyard
11.02.15 | I never really listen to my music often enough to get some sort of negative reaction from it. If anything I would some layers and sounds here and there to give it a fuller sound. Mostly toward my first Volcanic Queen album. Sometimes even though you get better at making music as time goes on, there's something about creating a song or album during a particular moment that you can never really capture again. |
laughingman22
11.02.15 | well said graveyard. There are just some moments in your life impossible to recapture |
TheGreatQ
11.02.15 | I usually start off thinking that I've made something amazing, then after some time goes by end up disliking it. Still kinda love my second Q ep though.

11.02.15 | I made a shitty EP by myself in my basement 2 years ago. Lyrically, I hate most of the stuff I wrote, but most of the music ideas I still enjoy. I'm in an actual band now and we play one song off that EP that everyone seemed to love, and that song I'm really proud of.
It's not exactly the same as the version my band plays now, but here's a link to a version of the song I did with a bunch of friends of mine: https://soundcloud.com/mutantsnowstorm/to-your-surprise-single |
Funeralopolis
11.02.15 | May as well throw my soundcloud out there, I'm really serious about any of the stuff I have posted on there though: https://soundcloud.com/brandon-schauer-1 |

11.02.15 | "Good move eliminating rap"
agreed
you could use a bit of King 810-styled poetry slam tho |
Tyler.
11.02.15 | I hate myself + anything I create |
BeyondCosby
11.02.15 | One of the most important pieces of advice I've received as a writer (and the credit goes to Stephen King's On Writing. If you are any sort of artist you need to read that book) is that after something is "complete" to put it aside for a couple months. Don't publish right away and instead give yourself time to develop a perspective outside of your original one. If you throw things out the moment the first draft is done of course you're going to be biased to it. You won't see the flaws because of the emotional investment. |
Beardog
11.02.15 | I mostly hate my music now cause the guitars ruin everything, hope buying a new guitar plugin will fix it but that's mainly why i hate my music. Production is the factor that ruins my song, I love my compositions though... Sometimes when I rush a song it sounds like shit and I do it over but I haven't made a song that I really hate or dislike and just want to cut from the record... I guess that's pretty wierd too.

11.02.15 | It's probably because my debut album (Heights) isn't finished and still needs vocals... I will probably hate the shit out of it when I hear my own voice on it... The only song I fully reworked was my Castle of Glass remix. It was the first song I ever made so it makes sense to totally redo it since I had no idea what I was doing at the time, but it still had great ideas that I kept in the song |
Drummerboy123
11.02.15 | 'hope buying a new guitar plugin will fix it'
Get BIAS and BIAS FX. I guess I'm the exception here as I tend to enjoy quite a lot of the stuff I make. My whole mantra I guess is 'what do I want to hear?" and just go from there. Obviously if I look at my previous material there are things that could be improved and/or changed but I would never put out music I'm not proud of. |
Beardog
11.02.15 | Yeah I think I have the same as you, I'm gonna buy Shreddage II. I don't play guitar, all the stuff on my albums is midi and the clean guitar just sounds like bullshit, I tried other virtual amps on Victimized but it doesn't fix it. Shreddage II sounds very realistic and is pretty cheap! I hope it will improve my production, I'm proud of how everything sounds but the guitars just ruin it... |
Alastor
11.02.15 | I remember a Bathory interview where Quorthon said he hates most of his albums and doesn't listen to them ever. He never had copies of his own albums too. |
Beardog
11.02.15 | Yeah I know more artists that have those feelings, or don't like their past works anymore |
Mutantsnowstorm
11.02.15 | If I were confident in my production abilities/equipment, I'd probably enjoy my own work more haha |
Beardog
11.02.15 | If I had good equipment I'd enjoy my own work more lol |
