11.17.15 | Here comes the hate. |
DinosaurJones
11.17.15 | Boy Hits Car are awesome. I hate that they call themselves "lovecore" though. |
AlexKzillion
11.17.15 | No Deftones = No list |
WellFedWhiteMale
11.17.15 | Further proof that I can never get into nu-metal. Go You though. |
turnip90210
11.17.15 | e baws, where your taproot at |
RivalSkoomaDealer
11.17.15 | Deftones - Around the Fur and Korn - s/t deserve spots on this list. |
Sniff
11.17.15 | I remember jamming Nonpoint pretty hard back in middle school |
PayneTiger777
11.17.15 | 11 is my favorite album of all time. |
TheGreatQ
11.17.15 | Wouldn't really call 12 nu metal, but it does indeed rule. |
PappyMason
11.17.15 | Have a soft-spot for 36 Crazyfists. They're great live! |
BAT
11.18.15 | this is like, elitist nu-metal what the fuck |
Supercoolguy64
11.18.15 | taproot were much better than what most people credited them for yeah
also no deftones = no list [2] |
zaruyache
11.18.15 | once again I'm disappointed that this isn't just a blank list. Why do you people do this to me? |
Keyblade
11.18.15 | where is hybrid theory
lol @ the concept of elite nu metal |
romulanrancor
11.18.15 | korn's s/t man |
0GuyMan0
11.18.15 | I strayed from obvious choices like Deftones (above and beyond nu metal) and Linkin Park (Hybrid Theory is a fucking masterpiece and it doesn't matter if you like rock music or not) just to get some opinions on some of these that nobody ever talks about. Glad to see some people are into some of these choices. |
Supercoolguy64
11.18.15 | static-x is industrial rock not nu metal u fool
just noticed 16 was on this list lol |
TheSonomaDude
11.18.15 | Is 1 really a nu-metal album? Just always seemed like an Undertow-esque album. |
FitToSwing
11.18.15 | Personally, I don't really think Deftones were ever "nu-metal". |
0GuyMan0
11.18.15 | That is one of the cool things about nu-metal to me. It is so varied. The difference between say hed PE and Deftones is fucking mind boggling, but both are nu-metal.
When people speak negatively about it, they are typically referring to the limp bizkit / pod / hed pe style rap-rock with JNCOs. If ONLY that is nu-metal then not a single one of these albums fits. But all those records were part of that ozzfest 97 - 2002 scene. To me, Nu-metal isn't derogatory. But there was some trash out there man. |
dimsim3478
11.18.15 | haven't jammed in many years but i remember the first slipknot album being good? also deftones and linkin park of cooooooooooooourse |
Supercoolguy64
11.18.15 | a band being nu metal doesnt necessarily mean its bad agreed |
bananatossing
11.18.15 | "Personally, I don't really think Deftones were ever "nu-metal"."
They were actually. Songs like Headup, Rickets, 7 Words, Lotion, Engine No. 9, etc, are straight up nu metal. It doesn't mean its bad by any means. |
0GuyMan0
11.18.15 | ^ Back to School... |
Deathconscious
11.18.15 | The Autumn Effect is the only good album here imo. |
0GuyMan0
11.18.15 | I always found nu-metal very receiving of experimentation as well.
36 CF - Waterhaul
Mudvayne - Prod
Nonpoint - Doublestakked
Boy Hits Car - Before We Die
Apex Theory - Hope diggy
10 Years - The Recipe
30 STM - Echelon
I mean....those aren't the kinds of songs people are talking about when they say nu metal sucks. |
Deathconscious
11.18.15 | how does The Recipe experiment at all? |
0GuyMan0
11.18.15 | song structure? I named these from memory, but I'm pretty sure thats the song I'm thinking of. |
Flugmorph
11.18.15 | Never really listened to nu metal until recently so since it wasnt my school jam for which i should be ashamed off to have listened to, i now can look back at some great bands that existed in that early scene and enjoy myself quite well |
0GuyMan0
11.18.15 | I just think the best artists transcended the genre. Nonpoint with their speed and high energy, powerful charismatic voicalist, Taproot with super-heaviness and Richard's weird nasally croon, 36 with their metalcore edge, Mudvayne with their avant-garde progginess etc. There is great stuff in there, like I always say. Even the dumbest bands have some good songs. If you ignore the lyrics, Nookie is a pretty great song. Korn has at least one jam on their first four albums. Staind's dysfunction album has "Just Go" and "Mudshovel". |
Flugmorph
11.18.15 | Korn is one of my fav bands from this genre actually i never REALLY understood the massive dislike towards their later albums |
TheSonomaDude
11.18.15 | Korn's later stuff is more highly mediocre than it is awful, with the exception of POT oc |
0GuyMan0
11.18.15 | Issues was always my favorite, because Trash and Somebody Someone. Untouchables had some good songs. After that, there is the Tomb Raider song and I really hate everything else they have done. |
DinosaurJones
11.18.15 | I've always liked the MUSIC of Limp Bizkit, I just can't stand Fred Durst |
wwf
11.18.15 | 2, 14 and 16 are really bad imoimo |
jtswope
11.18.15 | 12 is really boring. |
BenThatsMyJamin
11.18.15 | Good list, even though I hate most nu metal. One album you definitely need to check out though is Downset - Do we speak a dead language?, like RATM except with more attitude |
0GuyMan0
11.22.15 | RATM is an all time favorite of mine, so downset seemed kinda derivative. Still good though. |
BenThatsMyJamin
11.24.15 | Oh yeah, without a doubt they are nowhere near as good as RATM |
hobblepot
12.19.15 | 30 Seconds To Mars was a brilliant album agree, but it's not nu-metal, far from it |
Brabiz
03.12.17 | Never heard 1 until i saw this list. Just hit track 5 and i'm seriously in love. I love this type of nu metal. Genuinely well written and unique while also maintinaing that super dated early 2000's sound. Super nostalgic. |
Brabiz
03.12.17 | Would recommend the album One Nation Under by Less Than Zero |
zaruyache
03.12.17 | the hell is evanescence even doing on a nu metal list |
chinesewhispers
03.12.17 | Agree that 1 is a jam. Checking 18 right now |
0GuyMan0
03.12.17 | Pulse Ultra is so fucking good.
Hotwire was hit and miss, but that album has three solid bangers. They were completely unknown (....well yeah they've always been completely unknown) but the pit when they played "Invisible" at Ozzfest '03 was insane. And you wouldn't think it, from hearing them. Their vocalist just had this insane energy.
For real though, lets talk about Pulse some more. This is the most interaction I've ever had in my life regarding that album.
Then you guys can listen to 9 and 10. Seriously legit. |
0GuyMan0
03.12.17 | That album is in desperate need of a review update. Maybe I'll jump on that. |
Storm In A Teacup
03.12.17 | 2, 12, 14, 15, and 16 are all great. I guess I should give all the other stuff a chance too! Bloodsimple I actually remember a single from them about 15 years ago that was fucking awesome. The guy has a rather guttural scream if I remember correctly. Thanks for the recs |
chinesewhispers
03.12.17 | I think about half the songs on that album are grade-A alt rock, but the other half are kind of forgettable. Apparently they were in the process of recording their second album when they broke up, they played a shitton of new songs at their last show |
0GuyMan0
03.12.17 | Bloodsimple's vocalist is from Vision of Disorder. That album has five legit fucking bangers.
I strongly recommend 1 / 9 / 10. If you need specific tracks - "Put it off" / "I'm a Cloud" / "Mucus Shifters", respectively. |
Storm In A Teacup
03.12.17 | I read that the guitarist is from Vision of Disorder too! Gotta check them out because they were from that New York era of heavy music which I love a lot of what came from that scene. Best Hardcore is always East Coast hardcore. |
Storm In A Teacup
03.12.17 | I rec the band BoySetsFire in return to you, if you haven't heard them =) |
0GuyMan0
03.12.17 | I always dug Will Haven more than VoD, but loved VoD's vocals so much.
Also, the singer in Apex Theory started System of a Down with Serj when they were in high school. Fun little tidbit.
'BoySetsFire' - you know, BoyHitsCar always got confused with that band when talking to people back then, but I never was able to listen to them. I'll jam them later. |
0GuyMan0
03.12.17 | Oh damn BSF has some nice averages. |
Storm In A Teacup
03.12.17 | exactly why I recc'd them lol
so if you do an album do Tomorrow Come Today, which is right here actually:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EbAHUXskA0k
or for a song to start with do "Rookie". that was their big hit back in the day
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6r9T9Cs1xDM
|
Snake.
03.12.17 | bsf is not nu metal |
Storm In A Teacup
03.12.17 | I didn't say they were nu-metal. I just think he would like them and Boys Night Out or whoever they are initially triggered the thought.
don't be so fickle snake. loosen up man! |
Snake.
03.12.17 | ffffuck i'm not paying attention oh well |
0GuyMan0
03.12.17 | haha boys night out |
Storm In A Teacup
03.12.17 | lol haha there's three of them I guess! |
0GuyMan0
03.12.17 | Oh shit theres a boys night out?
Also, don't sleep on 4. Has some serious bangers. |
Storm In A Teacup
03.12.17 | yeah there is lol sput says they're posthardcore pop punk emo
will do! |
Storm In A Teacup
03.12.17 | I've never even listened to boys night out or talked to anyone about them ever. I must have noticed them on sputnik years ago and the memory is linked to BSF lol |
pizzamachine
03.12.17 | Good shit in this list |
Storm In A Teacup
03.12.17 | pizza! |
0GuyMan0
03.12.17 | I'd be tickled for someone to drop an album of 1 quality that I've not heard of. There were a lot of hidden gems in that era. Endo is another band that I think was dealt a bit of a shit hand. Think their album was called Songs for the Restless? Another Ozzfest '03 alum. |
0GuyMan0
03.18.18 | And now I'm in a nu-metal mood again and continue to believe 1 can't be topped. |
zaruyache
03.18.18 | jam Meshuggah's Chaosphere tho |
pizzamachine
03.18.18 | 1 is riffy and stuff yeah |
Asdfp277
03.18.18 | gotta check this, never got into nu-metal but also never minded it |
someguest
03.18.18 | "jam Meshuggah's Chaosphere tho"
excuse me |
Asdfp277
03.18.18 | wow |
zaruyache
03.18.18 | Chaosphere is the end-all-be-all of rhythmic vocal heavy guitar metal and anyone who says differently is a poser. |
someguest
03.18.18 | I thought you were implying the album is nu-metal. |
zaruyache
03.18.18 | It basically is. |
0GuyMan0
03.18.18 | that makes no goddamn sense |
someguest
03.18.18 | oh god |
0GuyMan0
03.18.18 | but its bold as fuck |
someguest
03.18.18 | when you base a genre claim on tuning alone |
zaruyache
03.18.18 | The vocals follow along the rhythms similar to nu metal, but are more aggressive and feel like an extreme metal-ation of nu metal, the guitars are obvsly very rhythmic and have that same, very particular start-stop style to them. It like to pretend it was a conscious reaction to and criticism of the nu movement, in a "nana nana we can do the same thing better" sort of way. |
someguest
03.18.18 | It's thrash with the leads removed. |
Asdfp277
03.18.18 | it's not the first time it's been claimed meshuggah play nu-metal, love em regardless tho |
zaruyache
03.18.18 | I mean just listen to New Millennium Cyanide Christ and tell me that ain't nu thrash :p |
pizzamachine
03.18.18 | Yeahh I gotta listen to em more |
zaruyache
03.18.18 | inb4 you tell me it ain't nu thrash |
GUNGFUHAMMERFIST
03.18.18 | nut rash |
0GuyMan0
03.18.18 | I just...I don't even like Meshuggah THAT much but to call them nu-metal doesn't feel anywhere near accurate. |
zaruyache
03.18.18 | just let me be edgy ok |
0GuyMan0
11.13.20 | I need to update this. Couple of these were just in my rotation at the time and don't really belong. |
