EvoHavok
02.18.16 | This has been on my mind for a long time, but a few things delayed my work on the descriptions. Considering Kyo’s and Kaoru’s birthdays were on the 16th and 17th, respectively, I suppose it’s a good occasion to show my love for the band in some way. |
Angelboros
02.18.16 | Happy kinda late birthday, Kyo and Kaoru!
Good job, Evo. |
EvoHavok
02.18.16 | Thank you! It's also Shinya's soon. |
DrGonzo1937
02.18.16 | Very nice list Evo. Nice explanations for each. |
DrGonzo1937
02.18.16 | Although, I am surprised MOAB is so low, I thought you enjoyed it quite a bit. |
EvoHavok
02.18.16 | Well, all my 4's from this band are really close to each other, so it's been kinda hard to do 8-5. |
DrGonzo1937
02.18.16 | Know what you mean, man. |
EvoHavok
02.18.16 | Having to do a distinction between the top 3 also made me quite annoyed haha. |
DrGonzo1937
02.18.16 | Yeah, Arche is marginally weaker than DSS and Uro, for me, but damn are the last three life changing. |
EvoHavok
02.18.16 | Agreed. Had Arche as first at some point in the past cuz I was listening to it all the time heh. |
CalculatingInfinity
02.18.16 | 1 is 1 congrats :P
Whopper list doing every album here justice, great job. Also for me Arche>Uroboros most likely |
EvoHavok
02.18.16 | Hm, that's fine; it's Arche that started your love for the band, after all. |
CalculatingInfinity
02.18.16 | True, I think it has more of an identity than Uroboros and the overall atmosphere is to die for. |
EvoHavok
02.18.16 | Uroboros gave a whole new identity and quality to the band that they never had before, though, and I think Arche wouldn't have been the same without it. |
CalculatingInfinity
02.18.16 | Clearly it was their breakthrough but Arche being more stripped back and reserved lets the more tranquil side of them shine. Having those giant backdrops and emphasis on slower songs gives an image just like that album cover. |
EvoHavok
02.18.16 | That is correct. The next album has so much to live up to, damn. |
CalculatingInfinity
02.18.16 | This is now the only band I will ever pre order for, I have faith. |
EvoHavok
02.18.16 | Oh yeah, it will slay no matter what. |
manosg
02.18.16 | Always a pleasure reading the descriptions on Evo's rankings even when I know nothing about the band. |
EvoHavok
02.18.16 | Haha, thank you! Not sure how much you'd enjoy this band, but you'll surely appreciate the vocalist's range. Have you also read the list from December? |
CalculatingInfinity
02.18.16 | Even if you don't like this band I think Kyo can blow anyone away if they like any metal...like at all and some cases even if they don't. |
Rik VII
02.18.16 | Beautiful list, nothing more to ask for. |
manosg
02.18.16 | "Have you also read the list from December?"
Actually, no. Gonna give it a look soon. |
EvoHavok
02.18.16 | @Rik Thanks a lot!
@manos Sweet, hope you'll enjoy the read. |
Jasdevi087
02.18.16 | you guys are still nuts for thinking DSS is their best ;) |
CalculatingInfinity
02.18.16 | DSS Master Race get with the program.
|
Jasdevi087
02.18.16 | nah |
CalculatingInfinity
02.18.16 | You wot m8? |
EvoHavok
02.18.16 | Please don't start album fights. |
CalculatingInfinity
02.18.16 | We do this all the time though :P |
EvoHavok
02.18.16 | Yeah, I know, just keep the disagreements friendly haha. |
Jasdevi087
02.18.16 | The day I fight over which Dir en Grey album is the best is the day I give up on life tbh |
tragic.details
02.18.16 | This is a pretty good list. If I were to rank them, Marrow would be last, but each of their albums is fairly unique in their own way so it makes it difficult for me to justify ranking. I also haven't listened to Arche yet, I need to get on that, especially if it's anything like Dum Spiro Spero. |
CalculatingInfinity
02.18.16 | Don't expect a DSS Part 2, far lighter affair but ultimately just as worthy to it. Also get on the limited edition of The Unraveling if you haven't too. |
crossparallel
02.19.16 | Beautiful descriptions as always. Goals. And now I need to give Gauze another spin. |
Archelirion
02.19.16 | I completely overlooked this yesterday somehow. As has been said time and time again, excellently written and well justified :]
...and yes. I will jam more Diru. |
CalculatingInfinity
02.19.16 | Evo is like the devil on your shoulders, prodding you with his fork to jam more Diru and I'm like the merchant from Resi 4 laughing in the corner stroking my collection. |
EvoHavok
02.19.16 | @tragic and cross Thank you!
@Aaron Remember that t-shirt design I made on that site? Haha
@Calc A really nice collection, that is. |
CalculatingInfinity
02.19.16 | And it'll only get bigger :P |
EvoHavok
02.19.16 | I'm sure it will. They deserve the money. |
CalculatingInfinity
02.19.16 | Kyo buying $16,000 shoes shows they're pretty well off. |
EvoHavok
02.19.16 | Livin' the dream lol. |
DrGonzo1937
02.20.16 | Well if people were paying £56 for an EP/single of mine I'd be buying $16,000 shoes too. haha But they've bloody earned it for sure. |
EvoHavok
02.20.16 | Steep prices, but they do put a lot of work into the special editions. |
DrGonzo1937
02.20.16 | Any Japanese SE CD always delivers on packaging and extras. Probably why I never have any money. lol |
CalculatingInfinity
02.20.16 | Hahahahaha ye. It's so worth it though, still have a bunch to get. At this rate they'll release stuff faster then I can buy. Still need Arche's SE which is gonna cost a bomb. |
EvoHavok
02.20.16 | All the fantastic live albums, too... |
DrGonzo1937
02.20.16 | I had a stage where I was collecting all the EP's, but the only really interesting ones are Uroboros onward. |
EvoHavok
02.20.16 | I love how they insert live dvd's for the limited edition singles of Arche. |
CalculatingInfinity
02.20.16 | My list so far of things to buy: Arche Budokan (WILL pre-order)
Arche Limited Edition
Uroboros Remaster Original Press
Gauze Limited Edition
DSS Budokan Regular (since no subbed doc)
Tour 14 Gauze
Not getting AQA or Rasa since their limited editions are DVD only. I may get Rinkaku and Sustain's limited but they're low priority. |
DrGonzo1937
02.20.16 | Yeah, AQA and Rasa having dvd only limted was just a strange move to me. You'd have thought it to be the other way. |
CalculatingInfinity
02.20.16 | Also yes I agree so hard with them doing what almost no band does and actually makes their singles worth buying. |
JigglyPDiddy
02.20.16 | Woah! I just noticed this list, bby. haha |
CalculatingInfinity
02.20.16 | @Dr: It's a shitty move but it's most likely the market of Blu Rays then wouldn't guarder them much profit. Shame because I'd buy all of them. |
DrGonzo1937
02.20.16 | Maybe their culture prefers DVD, who knows. |
JigglyPDiddy
02.20.16 | Agreed, #dirublurayswhen |
CalculatingInfinity
02.20.16 | Most people still buy DVD's mostly, so they're the biggest money makers. Only people who are obsessed with the band will go for limited and Blu Rays. Thank God they started doing Blu Ray limited editions with Ghoul/DSS Budokan, now only if they sub all their doc/behind the scenes stuff >. |
EvoHavok
02.20.16 | Nah, there may very well be people obsessed with the band that don't own/don't want to own a blu-ray player so they go with the DVD's. Since Blu-ray players used to be expensive, I think the tech just couldn't impose itself all that well to the mainstream. I'm glad I have my PS3 for the Blu-rays. Plus, people may want to play them on PC/laptop, and they are rarely bought with Blu-ray players. |
CalculatingInfinity
02.20.16 | That is true, again thank God for my PS3 and the other Blu Ray Player in my house. Then you have some people who just can't afford it. |
EvoHavok
02.21.16 | It's worth it cuz the image quality improvement is tremendous on properly done Blu-rays. |
CalculatingInfinity
02.21.16 | Bumping just to say if people here haven't checked their live stuff....do it do it do it do it do it do it. |
crossparallel
02.21.16 | Every performance of The Blossoming Beelzebub ever - Calc shall agree ^^ Currently stuck on the one labeled on YT as Symphonic Ver. Kyo's acting on that is just... |
CalculatingInfinity
02.21.16 | @cross: One from 2011 or DSS' Budokan? |
EvoHavok
02.21.16 | Definitely. Recent years are quite incredible; songs from all their eras are played very well. |
crossparallel
02.21.16 | @Calc 2011. Budokan is grand with the skull make-up and projector and all, but I just find watching Kyo acting it out in 2011 a lot more impressive. Rock theatre is kinda my thing. |
TalonsOfFire
02.21.16 | Having only heard 4, 6, and 9 in full and enjoying them a lot, I'm stoked to jam 1-3. |
CalculatingInfinity
02.21.16 | @cross: There's 2 at DSS Budokan and I wasn't referring to that one. There's a Symphonic Beelzebub on day 2, this is it. That stare at the audience as the camera does a close up is such an harrowing image: https://youtu.be/5BG7qgi2CpM?t=1h5m36s |
CalculatingInfinity
02.21.16 | @Talons: If you think Dir en Grey ruled with those, 1-3 will blow your mind. |
TalonsOfFire
02.21.16 | I might jam Uroboros later today, is it recommended that I start with the expanded edition or the regular version? Both are on spotify. |
crossparallel
02.21.16 | @Calc Oh, thank you for that! It's a treat, especially since Kyo's vocals just slay here. You know I haven't gotten to watch the whole show yet, and I couldn't have found it since it isn't a separate upload. |
Angelboros
02.21.16 | @ Talons: There's nothing inherently wrong with the original edition, but you're better off checking the remastered version of that album IMHO. |
CalculatingInfinity
02.21.16 | @Talons: Expanded (one with Hydra 666 and Bugaboo Respira added to it), because that's the remaster. The original's production is vastly inferior.
@cross: That and Ghoul are in my eyes their best live shows, so I obviously recommend it. |
Angelboros
02.21.16 | I should also add that the remaster features Japanese-language versions of Glass Skin and Dozing Green; far more superior than the Engrish-y renditions. |
TalonsOfFire
02.22.16 | Remaster it is then |
EvoHavok
02.22.16 | Wise choice, Talons. You should like it. |
