Folk Metal!

This subgenre gets a bad rap so I decided to recommend some albums that actually make folk and metal work.
1Moonsorrow
Verisakeet

The songs are long and deliberately paced, the vocals give me shivers and the melodies are both simple and grand. Instead of metal songs with fiddles and flutes added the songs here use folk music as a primary influence that gives the (ridiculously heavy) riffs an ancient flavour.
2Windir
Arntor

While they may seem like a typical black metal band on the surface, Windir's strong sense of melody displays a lot of influence from folk and classical music. While it is debatable which Windir album is the best (they are all very strong), Arntor is my personal favourite.
3Empyrium
Songs of Moors and Misty Fields

In sharp contrast to the upbeat rhythms of other folk metal bands, Empyrium has a distinct doom, perhaps even gothic metal flavour. The use of flutes and swaying acoustic guitar rhythms deliver a very somber atmosphere. After this album they'd transition to a full-on folk band.
4Skyclad
Prince of the Poverty Line

Being one of the very first folk metal bands, Skyclad have a lot of distinct qualities. Instead of the black metal influence of most other bands there is instead a more NWOBHM feel. Also unusual are the wiccan themes and politically-charged lyrics, this album loosely describing Britian in its post-Thatcher years.
5Ensiferum
Ensiferum

A bit more upbeat and fun than the other albums listed, Ensiferum's debut combines exciting rhythms and tight instrumentation with a brilliant ear for melody. It's quite a diverse album too, with battle anthems, gorgeous slower-paced hymns and a couple of melodic black metal songs for good measure.
