RANKED: Deftones

My favorite band, ranked in order from greatest to least.
1Deftones
Diamond Eyes

Of all of Deftones' albums, this is one that I can listen to at any point and still be absolutely floored by. It's simple, but that's why it is so fantastic. It combines everything that the band had done up until that point and blends it together to make a fantastic piece of work. No song feels like filler, the musicianship is some of the best the band has offered to us to date, and while I love albums like White Pony, Diamond Eyes, in my opinion, is the definitive Deftones album.
2Deftones
Koi No Yokan

This album picks up where Diamond Eyes left off and expands upon its sound, leading to some incredible results. While it is not as accessible or as fun to listen to, it is a perfect companion piece with more to offer. "Entombed" is hands down one of the best songs Deftones has ever written.
3Deftones
White Pony

Of course, White Pony is in the top three and for very good reason. This is the point where Deftones shifted their sound and shed their nu-metal identity. They traded much of their heavier attributes for something more engaging and beautiful sounding. While I still think Koi No Yokan and Diamond Eyes are better albums, there is no denying that White Pony deserves its title as one of the best albums not only by Deftones but in the entirety of music overall.
4Deftones
Saturday Night Wrist

Easily Deftones' darkest album, especially when you look into the events surrounding this album, including the band almost breaking up and Chino being heavily addicted to drugs at the time. Despite that depressing background, it makes for a moody, almost ambient release that ranges from soft and intimate tracks like "Rivere" and "Beware" to the sheer aggressiveness featured on "Rapture" and "Rats!Rats!Rats!" This is definitely one of the band's most mature outings (save for the last 90 seconds of "Pink Cellphone"), and while I wasn't as big on it when I first listened to it, it has grown on me a lot since that time.
5Deftones
Around the Fur

My favorite of the two "nu-metal" albums Deftones made. Funny enough, this used to be my least favorite Deftones album, but like SNW it grew on me overtime and now I consider to be a great staple in the band's career. It's heavy, filled with angst, but also shows a maturity in the band after Adrenaline and hints at the changes to come in the band's follow up. It also contains some classic Deftones tracks such as "My Own Summer (Shove It)" and "Be Quiet and Drive (Far Away)". Overall, a step up from its predecessor and definitely one that shows that Deftones, at least at one point, could bring some heavy to the mix (they still can).
6Deftones
Adrenaline

The band's starting point, and still their heaviest release. What amazes me about this album is that, despite the fact that they have been lumped in with nu-metal artists like Korn and Limp Bizkit, Deftones from the beginning sound like a band wanting to depart from the rest, and this album is proof of that. Though it definitely has some nu metal elements in it, Adrenaline is more focused on delivering aggressive, punch-to-the-face riffs than it is about fitting in with the crowd, and it also succeeds better in its musicianship than most nu-metal bands out there. Not my favorite Deftones album to come back to, but still one that I really enjoy.

Deftones

The band's follow up to White Pony, and one that is filled with some great content. "Hexagram" is a fantastic and heavy opening to the album. "Minerva" was actually the first Deftones song I got into, and it remains one of my favorites. There are also some other good moments on here, but frankly I don't go back to this album as much as I do the releases mentioned above. It just doesn't have as much to love about it, and even though all the tracks on here are good and make for a fine listen, they just aren't as memorable as the band's other material. Still, Deftones is a great release and one that any fan should check out, even if it doesn't stand out as much as the rest of their discography.
8Deftones
Gore

I know that I'm gonna get some flak for this, but while Gore is still a great Deftones album, it doesn't stand out among the pantheon of albums that Deftones has put out. It opts to go for a more atmospheric approach, and while the new style is nice, there are songs on here that just don't click with me personally, though some are among the best in Deftones' career ("Prayers/Triangles," "Gore"). Maybe over time I'll get more into this; heck, as I said above, it took me a while to get into both SNW and ATF. But for right now, it is my least favorite Deftones' album, though not a bad album at all.
