Slope One: The Album Recommender
Slope one is an collaborative filtering algorithm (wiki it if you want more in depth info) that takes inputs of user rating information and can be used to predict what a user would like (specifically how they would rate something) given the behavior of other users. I modified my dataset (all user ratings for all staff reviewed albums, 7821 albums total, scraped circa March 20th) and used code from this page http://stackoverflow.com/questions/1022649/weighted-slope-one-algorithm-porting-from-python-to-r to calculate slope one (I believe it is the weighted slope one) recommended album ratings. Because it would have taken literally days to input all user data into a matrix as the code on that page does, I wrote code to randomly sample 250 users from the dataset as well as any preselected users, to make album recommendations (it takes about 3 and a half minutes to do it with 250 users). I selected, to ensure variety, Deviant, KILL, user, FearThyEvil, SowingSeason, and Voivod as part of my user set and my top 10 albums recs are presented below. If you would like slope one recommendations, say so in the comments below, and if you want some specific users in the recommendation algorithm, mention them as well. Some quirks of this: it can only recommend albums within my dataset, and specifically only those in the 250+ user set. Thus, it would work better if you pick users with a lot of ratings that match your taste but that have somewhat different ratings from you. Also, you’ll get more unique/useful/relevant recommendations, the more thorough and complete your ratings were when I scraped. |
