eleCtrONic recs

hi so yeah idk really any electronic music and I feel like I need to get into this very diverse genre. list is stuff I know already but as you can see it's very small
1Tycho
Dive

Love this chill-vibe. Anything like this would be cool
2Girlfriends
Girlfriends

Not even that electronic but kinda dig the upbeat electronic stuff that it does have. Anything catchy and upbeat would be cool
3Kygo
Cloud Nine

Saw him live and was kinda impressed but I'd rather not get recs like this
4Sweet Trip
Velocity : Design : Comfort

Not sure if I'm ready for the more abrasive IDM stuff just yet so more accessible stuff would be cool
5Bright Eyes
Digital Ash in a Digital Urn

Not the biggest fan of this album tbh but any dark, brooding electronic recs would be cool
6Sleep Party People
Sleep Party People

SHIT forgot that I love this so anything like this would be cool
7James Blake
The Colour in Anything

R&B influenced modern stuff like this would also be dope
Recs below:

For Lack of a Better Name

SCREAM!
Rating: 2.97/5 Okay so I definitely liked a couple songs off of here. Strobe was an immediate highlight as the ending of it makes up for the rather long buildup. Ghosts n Stuff was pretty great as well and I thought the vocals were a cool touch. Issue I have with this is it's pretty repetitive, house music and some songs suffer because of their inability to go anywhere meaningful. I will definitely be coming back to 3-4 of these songs but overall as an album I'm not sure I would want to listen to the entire thing again

Much Less Normal

ShitsofRain
Rating: 3.05/5 I feel like this album is somewhat bi-polar. I kinda dug the 2nd and 3rd tracks but nothing from the first half seemed too interesting to me, due to it's house-y nature. Then Ad in the Paper came on and the ambient, slower nature of that track was just pure bliss for me. The next couple of tracks also had the cool ambient sound going for them but Ad in the Paper is definitely my favorite track. This is definitely gorgeously composed and put together, but the soundscape itself might not exactly be my thing. Really interesting listen though and I'll probably come back to this.
10Boards of Canada
Tomorrow's Harvest

Avagantamos
Rating: 3.15/5 I hate that I'm giving out so many threes so far but this is another one. Maybe I'm not ready for the whole ambient, minimalist style of electronic music just yet but this felt a bit boring to me. There were, however, a lot of really cool, brilliant moments on here but the highlights always seemed to be followed by some unimpressive tracks. Will have to revisit this one and the rest of BoC's discography though, maybe during a time where I can focus more on the music. Cold Earth is definitely one of my favorite electronic tracks so far though.

Avagantamos
Rating: 3.22/5 Some really interesting stuff going on here for sure. Some parts of this album are absolutely brilliant, especially at its most complex and cluttered moments. Other times I felt like zoning out to the album, which isn't necessarily a bad thing just that I wish they kept the quality up throughout the album. Doesn't flow as nicely as other electronic albums, however. Hard album to digest but something I will probably come back to since some of the more interesting/unique ideas were present out of all the recs so far.
13The Avalanches
Since I Left You

Avagantamos
Rating: 3.95/5 This was quite impressive and had a lot of the elements I was looking for in an electronic album. Catchy, pop appeal, cool/unique samples, and fantastic production. The flow of this album is also really impressive as I could hardly tell exactly when a new song would be playing, but at the same time each song had it's own samples/themes. Some really cool tracks but a couple tracks on here dragged a bit and lost the energy this album had going for it. Overall, though, an excellent album that I will definitely be returning to.

Rating: 3.92/5 Really loved the vibe and atmosphere on this album wow. The trip-hop, electronic beat and the sultry, dark female vocals are just perfect together. This was always a band that I had heard of, due to Radiohead being compared to them, so I'm glad I was finally able to check them out. It's a Fire is really only the weak spot for me, a bit too simple/poppy for me. The sparse sampling and the brooding tone throughout this album really makes it. Could definitely grow and is an album I'm now excited to return to.

Rating: 4.19/5 Wow so this album took me by surprise. Was a bit skeptical at first with the glitchy start, but once this thing got going I was hooked. The melodies on this album are impeccable really, and the distorted, high pitched vocals really add to this album. Really beautiful, touching, and sometimes catchy in nature. Animals by far was my favorite track as they incorporated the twinkly guitar(?) and some sweet samples. These are all pretty upbeat tracks too, which makes it fun to listen to. Overall awesome rec, one of my favorites

ArsMoriendi
Rating: 2.13/5 Yeah unfortunately this isn't my thing at all. I found this to be a very strange listen and the vocals kinda ruined a lot of the electronic elements in the album that were interesting. The song Program was probably my favorite, as the samples were really cool and the build of the song was overall an intriguing listen. I realize this is a very influential album and is way ahead of its time, yet I struggle to justify giving this a higher score just because of that because for me this was not an enjoyable listen. Some surreal/creepy moments, sure, but other than that this album gives me no reason to come back to it.
19The Knife
Shaking the Habitual

ArsMoriendi
Rating: 3.95/5 This album was quite the unique experience. Loved the upbeat, lush vibes that this produces, but the most impressive part about this album is how it is able to construct these grandiose songs. Lots of intense moments and lots of weird ones too, but it all comes together in a beautiful way. Will be relistening to this to let it truly sink in, as it is a lot, but I was impressed with this album to say the least.

Rating: 3.44/5 This is the rec that sounds the most like Tycho and it's really good stuff. Not as poppy and immediately gratifying as Dive but definitely a bit more complex and structurally interesting. This is the kind of electronic music I see myself listening to, the uplifting, melodic, atmospheric stuff. Light and bubbly yet also unique enough for repeated listens. Great stuff, only complaint is that because it's not as immediate I'll need some more time for it to grow on me more.

Rating: 4.23/5 So amazing record here, really atmospheric and post-rock influenced which is cool for me as I still don't have a lot of electronic experience. All the tracks had a different mood to them yet the album had a pretty good flow. Very top heavy as my least favorite tracks were the 3rd and 2nd to last ones, as Space Mountain especially dragged a bit. Other than that there's really not too many complaints I have with this other than I should've listened to it high haha. Really tests your imagination which is something new for me and music.

Rating: 4.07/5 This is like a movie soundtrack to a new age, noir style film. It's creepy, it's bold, it's intense, and it's amazing. The way they string together this album is perfect and the opener is one of the best sounding songs I've ever heard. I just wish that the whole album was able to follow the intensity of the first track. Overall this album was one of my favorites for sure.

Where You Go I Go Too

PappyMason
Rating: 3.44/5 This was pretty good. A lot spacey-er than I expected and a lot of the elements within the album were definitely interesting. Loves how within the first track that main synth melody would get repeated after certain builds but since it wasn't repeated all the time it kept the track interesting. 2nd track looked promising but was a bit too stagnant for my taste. Third track grooves hard and the last 7-8 minutes were definitely my favorite on the album. Overall this was a bit boring but something that I want to check out again. Definitely unique

Rating: 3.05/5 People did warn be this album was a bit abrasive but I decided to check anyways since it was only 30ish minutes long. Well, this was really entertaining to say the least, although im not sure it is for the right reasons. My favorite songs on here are def the calmer ones (Film, Bucephalus Bouncing Ball, To Cure...) and by far my least favorites are Come to Daddy (Pappy Mix) and Funny Little Man. Like, it's so weird but almost too weird for my tastes tbh, Plus the vocal samples are out of this world ridiculous, almost as if they are trying to hard to be strange. The last Come to Daddy mix (Mummy Mix) was pretty cool and IZ-US is decent but idk man this doesn't seem like it's for me.

TVC15
Rating: 3.67/5 So this I enjoyed a decent amount tbh. Had a lot of cool trip hop things going on with it and was perfect to listen to after listening to Dummy by Portishead. Vocals weren't as much my thing as I wanted them to be especially when compared to Dummy but a lot of these songs were good despite this. Teardrop is def a standout as well as Black Milk but some of the other tracks are a bit too strange for my tastes. Will jam again though soon for sure. Also for some reason brings out a lot of 90s, nostalgic vibes which is nice.

Rating: 3.63/5 Really interesting album for sure. Surprised me a lot with all the different genres this album tries to take in throughout it's course. Ranging from hard rock to rap to even some spanish influences this album has it all. Sometimes it works as the combination of electronic elements and guitar riffs go hand in hand but sometimes the "metal" vocals and instrumentals are a bit overbearing at times. This was an eclectic listen, however, and something I look forward to dissecting more and more.

Rating: 3.55/5 Great atmospheric trance album to chill out to for sure. The production on here is incredible and the flow of the entire thing is really cool. Very lush and melodic which I def appreciate. Vocals are on about half of these tracks and it surprised me because it was working so well as an instrumental album. Vocals never really took away from the album, per say, but some tracks (Richard Bedford ones especially) could've done without them. Biggest complaint is that this sounds really basic and generic for some reason to me. Even though I'm not into trance at all it sounds like I've heard something like this before. Not as fun to listen to because of it's predictability but at the same time the attention to detail this thing has makes me look past the generic nature of it. Overall something I would def chill out to again.

Rating: 3.77/5 So this was a surprise. Didn't really know what to expect going into this short little EP but man is it cool. The trap influenced sound is actually something I really dig and these "beats" (if you will) are actually interesting enough on their own without a rapper. Samples are pretty dope and even a little catchy at times. Excited to check out Sach's other recs now because of this. Only issue really is it doesn't beg for repeated listens like some of these other electronic recs. Pretty surface level stuff (what you hear is what you get, no deeper shit) but I'm fine with that to be honest. Really enjoyable

Rating: 2.60/5 Unfortunately not my thing at all. Looked promising but the techno/house style lost it's luster after the 2nd track. Interesting is definitely the most I can say about this release. Seems a bit repetitive and none of the tracks really stood out as highlights to me. I get that I'm starting to learn this type of electronic music isn't my thing but at the same time I have to be honest about my ratings.

Rating: 3.53/5 Really cool rap beats, nice atmosphere. There were some bangers like !!-Major and No One but there were also some kinda uninspired, empty feeling ones like Church. Overall this is a solid cloud rap inspired mixtape and some of these beats are so good that I would love to see some rappers rap over them.

Flugmorph
Rating: 3.61/5 Really interesting album here, was a bit worried during the 1st song when the samples were going but luckily they didn't continue to overuse samples within this album. Very psychedelic, very trance, and very cool. Had a cool upbeat, house kind of vibe throughout the entire album yet the music itself was kind of dark and brooding. Would definitely be a good album to listen to while high on something. Only complaints is this ran a bit long and was realllllly same-y/repetitive but I've come to expect that kind of thing within this genre by now.

Flugmorph
Rating: 2.23/5 Okay so unfortunately I really don't dig this or it's aesthetic at all. Maybe it's the whole futurepop thing it's got going on, but the vocals really turned me off after awhile. It's weird though because after the first song I thought I was gonna dig it despite the vocals but they switch up vocal styles for the worse as songs go on. I appreciate some of the electronic elements going on, but it's mixed so that the vocals get the spotlight, putting the redeeming qualities of this album in the background, unfortunately. It did have a cool, metallic/cold kind of vibe going on and some of the builds were nice but overall I just couldn't vibe with this record at all.

Rating: 3.80/5 Really cool stuff. Loved the use of the vocal samples and the weaving of melodies and harmonies around those samples. My favorite track of the three is probably the last one as it is the most interesting track for sure. From 7:30 on it really gets dark and clustered and it's sweet. First track does an excellent job of building upon itself, stopping, and then building again right afterward. Also had the catchiest sample. Wish there was more melodic vocal samples I guess but maybe that's just what hooked me in. Need to check out his full length for sure now though.
