07.21.16 | Like the last one, comment jazz albums to add to this list. The last one wasn't filled up, but I just wanted a fresh list for some fresher recs
Wish I could view my ratings per genre so that I could've added more albums I've already heard... There's an awful lot of jazz rap in there too hah. |
LotusFlower
07.21.16 | Arcana - Arc of the Testimony |
zakalwe
07.21.16 | I like the new badbadnotgood album a lot. Shite name though.

thanks for keeping the love alive while I take a break
ALSO; Idris Ackamoor & The Pyramids - 'We Be All Africans' is the album of the year so far, put it on the list |
doomjitsu
07.21.16 | im currently revisiting off minor's heat death of the universe and you should add it on the list bro |
doomjitsu
07.21.16 | just do it ok dont be a bitch |
SandwichBubble
07.21.16 | Add a Bill Evans album, please. He deserves more love. |
dimsim3478
07.21.16 | Fela Kuti fuck yea |
TVC15
07.21.16 | List updated.
Yeah Gwyn. jazz is in dire need of love these days. Looks like a sweet album too I need to jump on that
I remember for my AP exam for English, I wrote on Fela Kuti's Zombie album for a paragraph concerning one of the prompts I was given for the writing part of it. Really powerful album when you take a good look at the context of which it was recorded and released |
Frippertronics
07.21.16 | Off Minor lol |
SandwichBubble
07.21.16 | appreciate'ya.
But, OFF MINOR ain't better than MINGUS. |

07.21.16 | "Didn't you already rec this on the previous list CL0VER or was that someone else?"
sssshhhhhh |
Jots
07.21.16 | not a lot of jazz here tbh
anyway i'd include some (relatively) recent musicians like: david ware, butch morris, hank roberts, ned rothenberg, supersilent, eugene chadbourne, tim berne, elliott sharp, fred lonberg-holm, and some onkyo performers even, like taku sugimoto. like, i don't think listening to hip-hop that uses jazz elements in a supplementary sense is gonna turn anyone onto it, but hearing some fairly modern-ish musicians who still draw a lot of influence from the spirit of jazz and are embedded in its history might (?) |
TVC15
07.21.16 | Thanks a ton Johnny! I can totally understand where you're coming from although everyone's a lil different don't you think?
Edit: looks like I'll have to add some of those to the userbase hah this should be interesting! |
Jots
07.21.16 | maybe but considering "jazz-rap" and vaguely-jazz-inspired bands have gotten plenty of exposure here, yet the genre remains largely undiscussed (which your list observes) it's safe to say that continuing to rep the same artists everyone is already aware of is probably gonna produce the same results |
TVC15
07.21.16 | Hmm I tried to use lesser known/discussed jazz rap but you do have a big point there. The excessive usage of them was more or less a result of just naming albums off the top of my head. I didn't really want to repeat albums from my previous list either |
LotusFlower
07.21.16 | jazz is a genre i need to explore more, tbh |
Jots
07.21.16 | if jazz wasn't notoriously hard to review (for me, anyway) I'd try to cover more : / |
TVC15
07.21.16 | I'm having much more trouble getting through my planned reviews than I used to. Somewhere down the line I plan on reviewing Let My Children Hear Music but even then it's going to be pretty hard making a convincing case that it's Mingus' magnum opus |
BlushfulHippocrene
07.21.16 | I've been using a lot more modern jazz or jazz-inspired bands like BBNG as a starter to the genre, and I think Christian Scott's another good one, as is Terrace Martin. Glad to see Fire! Orchestra, too. I find Bill Evans and Ryo Fukui easy to listen to as well. |
TheCrocodile
07.21.16 | what johnny said last seems to apply to most jazz lovers on this site it seems |

07.21.16 | Oooh a jazz musician with the same first name as me?? That's gotta be interesting

DominionMM1
07.21.16 | "jazz is in dire need of love these days"
yes and no. i mean its seems that most users don't listen to jazz on the reg or really go out of their way to find different stuff. however, considering 3 of the 6 highest rated albums on this site are jazz records i'd say it gets some love. |
Chortles
07.21.16 | Bill Evans is the best dude ever |
Sinternet
07.21.16 | lol what half of these aren't jazz |
Sinternet
07.21.16 | like most of them are just other genres with a jazz influence not actual jazz and wtf is Off Minor doing here |
doomjitsu
07.21.16 | what the fuck are you talking about, off minor is the best thing to happen to this list |
TheCrocodile
07.21.16 | "however, considering 3 of the 6 highest rated albums on this site are jazz records i'd say it gets some love."
people treat more these albums as 'checkmarks' than anything else |

07.21.16 | off minor is more jazz than the black kids that bully you at school |

07.21.16 | @Sint lol I'm aware which is why I'm taking recs from users to fill it up with more proper albs. Off Minor is clearly a joke like how I included Grotesque on the last one |
TVC15
07.21.16 | List updated. Need to get Johnny's recs into the database when I get more time on my hands |
DrMaximus
07.21.16 | I thought this was gonna be a followup to Gwyns list or something |
TVC15
07.21.16 | ^more or less something I decided to do when Gwyn.'s lists got slower and I finally embarked on my journey into the genre. I'm still probably feet deep (I have tiny feet, mind you) into it as you could tell by my initial choices on this particular list hah |
Sniff
07.21.16 | Everybody digs Bill Evans for sure! |
Jots
07.21.16 | I can add that stuff to the DB later |

07.21.16 | Check out Robert Glasper and the Esbjorn Svensson Trio |
Winesburgohio
07.21.16 | jazz needs more love from you clearly
what the fuck is this? I'm personally affronted |
TVC15
07.21.16 | @Winesburgohio I've already admitted that I'm still feet deep into the genre and I already made a previous list with jazzier picks from me so I sort of ran out :( wanna hit the list up with recs? |
rabidfish
07.21.16 | Vince Guaraldi Trio
Sonny Clark
Robb Mazurek
Max Roach |
TVC15
07.21.16 | Cool obscure picks rabidfish! I'll have to add Robb Mazurek to the database |

Arturo o farrill - boss level, is also missing from Sputinikmusic |
TVC15
07.23.16 | List updated. vonseux and Dodenakker, gonna have to add some of those to the database but thank you very much!

ArsMoriendi
07.23.16 | I guess Chunga's Revenge has its jazzy moments
Waka/Jawaka and The Grand Wazoo rule, check Sleep Dirt |
wham49
07.26.16 | side one of Chunga's with Transylvania boogie and the Nancy and Mary music |
MillionDead
07.27.16 | Peter Brotzman - Machine Gun? That's free jazz monster. Coltrane's A Love Supreme is an easy classic. Thelonius Monk with John Coltrane or Monk's Blues. I feel like Miles Smiles is a Davis album that's fairly slept on. I'd recommend a Gerald Wilson album, but he doesn't have a page here. Sight by Adam Rodgers is a great time. Canvas by Robert Glasper. Some Nina Simone is essential. McCoy Tyner and Wes Montgomery, too. |
marf1300
07.27.16 | What about some of the old jazz-rock fusion of the 70's?
Mahavishnu Orchestra - Birds of Fire

NastyCrab
07.27.16 | Jazz is great pup name |
cubbienathan
08.03.16 | Donny Mccaslin - Fast Future (this is the dude that led the band on Bowie's Blackstar, this band is unreal, has some electronic elements although they are generally secondary to the jazz elements)
Ryan Keberle and Catharsis - Into the Zone (He is a pretty accomplished session musician, has played w/Sufjan Stevens, here is what got me into him http://www.npr.org/event/music/353534954/ryan-keberle-catharsis-tiny-desk-concert)
Snarky Puppy - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=L_XJ_s5IsQc Watch this whole video, the synth solo will make you lose your shit. This is actually a cut off their album We Like it Here, most of their albums are recorded live as shown in this video |
