| ArtBox's Art Box: Ranking SOAD's Artwork
Week 5, coming at you live on the new day of Saturday, until I make a list after this day and it's late again. I swear it's weekly, there's a lot of days in the week. Anyway, today I'm judging the 5 System of a Down studio albums. | 5 | | System of a Down Mezmerize
Normally I've got a debatably witty statement about an artwork, even if it's a low ranking or I don't think it's good.
I've got nothing here. I just don't like this one enough to put the effort in. It looks how it looks and I hate it. | 4 | | System of a Down Steal This Album!
It takes a lot of care to be carefree (and the pretentious stolen paraphrased quote of the day goes to...). A subtle acknowledgement of the power of Napster - if not an outright mockery of it - that would likely have been taken a bit too seriously by a few. | 3 | | System of a Down Toxicity
Systemwood. Bolder than it looks in the case of this album. How better to comment on fame than replacing the bastion of fame's name with your own? And then put Toxicity in bold red letters on the hills afterwards? Self-deprecating humour is the best kind of humour, or so they say. | 2 | | System of a Down Hypnotize
To be honest, I'm not entirely sure why Hypnotize gets a pass - let alone gets so high on the list - while Mezmerize doesn't. Same hypnotizing/mezmerizing watches? I'll call that and raise you a skull on it. Creepy omniscient face? Check, even if it's more like a Smurf cousin. Maybe the addition of a clock has put it up so high; like we get so hypnotized by the social environment we can't see the time just disintegrating around us. Maybe the red aura around exudes danger, blood. Maybe my eyes just like it better. | 1 | | System of a Down System of a Down
Five fingers, grabbing the heart and the mind of the world from the cold dark abyss. Just like how a small, angry Armenian-American rock band begin to take what they can. Even with the political context - inspired or taken by a John Heartfield anti-fascist poster - it still looks vague enough that you can picture whoever that hand might belong to. Who might just decide to clench it. Unnerving and powerful. | |
