2016 arcane

oh boy another '''''unheard''''' 2016 list, whatever, shameless plugs for deserving faves
1even oxen
arrayed above the seraphim lights

unequivocal AOTY, fuzzy lo-fi experimental jesus freak folk based on the book of revelations. not religious at all myself, but this album is amazing regardless of religious bias, trust me
2she's beautiful
ok

this will prob come second, very emotional and harrowing listen in the vein of xiu xiu. i wrote a very bad ~conceptual review~ on a crazy turn and quickly asked for it to be taken down when I came to my senses, but the should give you a gauge how affecting this album can be
3yoni & geti
testarossa

kinda crazy how little attention this has got, the wolf and geti together again and you guys ignoring? it's a pretty conceptual album but it's got it's bangers like 'madeline, 'allegheny' and 'simone'. stop the apathy peeps
4a dead forest index
in all that drifts from summit down

minimalist indie folk album, much more interesting than sowing's latest wet dream. drumming's excellent and really adds to the haunting atmosphere. i saw em live supporting savages and were way better imo
5dm stith
pigeonheart

i might be accused of a little bias here cause i just really love this guy, it's probably a bit weaker than his last effort although that was superb so he had a lot to live up to. he does go harder on the electronics this time around, especially in songs like 'war machine' and 'sawtooth', but beautiful melodies like the ones on 'up to the letters' are still very much prevalent. check it out if you're in the mood for indie folk with a difference
6oliver coates
upstepping

villalobas style minimal techno from an up n coming cellist who knows his way around the musical sphere. worked on a moon shaped pool and has a collab with mica levi (did the soundtrack for that under the skin film and part of micachu and the shapes) coming up. get on dat shizz
7good willsmith
things our bodies used to have

really cohestive free improv, utilising drone very well. bluesy guitar riffs also hell yeah
8jacob hutto
paw paw's songs

i like this from a rym review: "A collection of poppy indie ideas strung together by field recordings and that feeling you get when you think about that one kid who died in a car crash in 4th grade." think that sums it up pretty well lol. think he's friends with the even oxen guy and he's got the same gift with layers and melodies, give it a go friends
9lithics
borrowed floors

driving lo-fi-ish post punk. deadpan female vox + awesome bass = hell yeah
10sensible soccers
villa soledade

understated electronic/ambient from portugal. got a sorta post-rockish structure to it but manages to stray into more interesting concepts
