11.25.16 | While I still think they're overrated (I know, cliche) I still greatly enjoyed and admired their creativity from their late era. But the pop of their early music didn't do anything for me, honestly. In the end, however, I'm glad I listened to them. It gave me a wealth of musical experience. |

11.25.16 | Most of this is acceptable
Worst thing about this is that you ranked Help! above Rubber Soul |
neekafat
11.25.16 | Yeah, idk what it is but Rubber Soul didn't feel too revolutionary to me, it just felt like them bending folk into pop music. |

11.25.16 | "Which is a cover"
Lol yeah that's what makes it so funny that it's the best song on the album (even still, The Beatles did the definitive version of the song let's be honest even though the original is class, Lennon's raspier vox on it soothe my soul) |

11.25.16 | The fact that so many books still name the Beatles as “the greatest or most significant or most influential” rock band ever only tells you how far rock music still is from becoming a serious art. Jazz critics have long recognized that the greatest jazz musicians of all times are Duke Ellington and John Coltrane, who were not the most famous or richest or best sellers of their times, let alone of all times. Classical critics rank the highly controversial Beethoven over classical musicians who were highly popular in courts around Europe. Rock critics are still blinded by commercial success. The Beatles sold more than anyone else (not true, by the way), therefore they must have been the greatest. Jazz critics grow up listening to a lot of jazz music of the past, classical critics grow up listening to a lot of classical music of the past. Rock critics are often totally ignorant of the rock music of the past, they barely know the best sellers. No wonder they will think that the Beatles did anything worthy of being saved. |

11.25.16 | Of course, rock critics often have a blatantly ignorant commentary on many things, but I think it's undeniable that the Beatles' legacy and status are legitimate, and absolutely not "blinded by their commercial success". Truth is, the Beatles actually did forefront immense changes in popular music, bringing rock closer to "actual serious art" than anyone had ever done before. With the Beatles and a few other artists came the idea of pushing the sound of pop and rock further away from its core, to explore entirely new places.
But I will tempt the risky comparison that The Beatles have actually a lot in common with Beethoven and Ellington, simply in the fact that they all started their musical career in genres that had become fairly stale (rock n'roll, the classical-era music and swing, respectively), only to become the forerunners of change and boundary-breaking in their respective scenes. But the Beatles, considering we live in an era where music is an industry, as deplorable as it is, were additionally remembered for being best-sellers. |

11.26.16 | Wow, this kinda blew up. Glad to have people agree, just kinda wanted to put in my two cents as "a guy who doesn't really like the Beatles."
Didn't mean to be clickbait, just figured my opinion to be more divisive then it was! I'm sure the next list will be much more controversial.
Also, Twist and Shout is the only reason it isn't 13. |
