Doof's Albums of the Year 2016
1Lambchop
FLOTUS

[4.8]

A lot of 'old dogs' in this list but in most cases we were dealing with a refinement of 'old tricks' rather than new ones. Not so Lambchop who jumped headfirst into the most bizarre example of vocal treatment in 2016 this side of Bladee. This is only the first of a number of reasons the album shouldn't work...the lyrics are odd (even by Wagner's standards), the album is ridiculously long and one toned and is bookended by two quarter of an hour long tracks, and most of these songs have a very loose regard for trad song writing convention. The thing is, it all just works and ends up feeling so substantial and inviting it's almost unreal. A cult classic in the making? You bet.
2Nick Cave and The Bad Seeds
Skeleton Tree

[4.7]

Everyone knows the story behind the album, most people knew it before pressing play for the first time, I certainly did - but it didn't prepare me. Lordy. This is in many ways a gruelling ordeal of a listen, but it's also undoubtedly one of the most compelling listening experiences of the year.
3Cass McCombs
Mangy Love

[4.6]

Cass buffs up his style to within an inch of its life, conjuring up a smooth retro 70s feel that pairs surprisingly well with his understated take on song writing. If you want an old school album of '12 good to excellent songs on a 45 minute or thereabouts disc' in 2016 then this is your boy (btw if you don't, why not go listen to the new Autechre and die already).
4Niechec
Niechec

[4.6]

An all instrumental jazz infused fusion-y sorta affair, but one that somehow avoids the three usual pitfalls of virtuoso wankery, fussy-stuffiness and (most importantly) emotional disconnect. If this catches you in the right mood it'll move you more than any other release this year (and what a year it is to make that statement).
5Radiohead
A Moon Shaped Pool

[4.6]

I really wasn't expecting this from Radiohead - I was anticipating another 'half complete' feeling album like 'KoL' where they'd sneak in a bunch of elevated accursed glitch-skit B-Sides. This was nothing of the sort, unified and in possession of an atmosphere all its own among their canon. An unexpected late career high spot no less.
6David Bowie
Blackstar

[4.5]

This is a stranger album than people give credit. Sure there are five songs that play to the overriding themes of death and legacy...but then you have the whore/Sue/girl trio and it's these that actually add that most important Bowie ingredient. He never, ever wanted to release anything too 'on the nose' and these oddballs make sure 'Blackstar' has just enough of the required oddity to evade easy categorisation.
7Drive-by Truckers
American Band

[4.5]

A deceptively 'simple' approach. Honest music, honest lyrics, honest sentiment...but in the grand tradition of the Dylan's, Young's and Springsteen's of yesteryear this had a rare sort of integrity. Plus it rocked.
8Stimming
Alpe Lusia

[4.5]

Some of the most purely beautiful soundscapes of the year, this album truly was a masterclass in dynamics and sonic layering.
9The Drones
Feelin Kinda Free

[4.3]

Bitter, angry, bilious....this album had a lot to say about the state of global politics in 2016. The musical backdrop was always elastic and inventive, making sure the album never got close to wallowing over our collective lot.
10Okkervil River
Away

[4.2]

I have a secret...I used to think these guys sucked pretty bad. Maybe they did too (hint: 'Okkervil River RIP'), either way for whatever reason this album is a little different to their other work. Here they aim square for 'pastoral splendour' and they hit it out the park.
11Richmond Fontaine
You Can't Go Back if There's Nothing to Go Back To

[4.2]

In a year where a lot of artists signed off with a farewell album only Richmond Fontaine put a 'ready for the knackers yard' horse on the front. This band were one of the all time most consistent alt country bands around and will be sorely missed, hats off for calling it a day with arguably their strongest release.
12The Veils
Total Depravity

[4.2]

Almost a homage to a certain style of movie/soundtrack music, immerse yourself in the heady Lynchian atmosphere.
13Klangstof
Close Eyes To Exit

[4.1]

Respect to anatelier for sending this lot my way, listening to this is a bit like playing a Radiohead themed computer game while dosed up on mogadon.
14Plantman
To the Lighthouse

[4.1]

Oh zak, where do you find these jangly, sad-as-sin indie troubadours?
15Nicolas Jaar
Sirens

[4]

Yet more slyly immersive stuff from nickel arse jar.
16Tindersticks
The Waiting Room

[4]

This took a while to grow on me, and yeah it definitely benefitted from me seeing it performed live, but all in all a solid outing from the sad-sack chamber-indie arty-farts.
17Luke Temple
A Hand Through the Cellar Door

[4]

More great folk storytelling song writing and stripped down musical backing from a 'below the radar' sorta artist.
18Jukka Nousiainen
Jukka Nousiainen

[4]

Shout out to the irrepressible Twig for the heads up on this one. A classic bar room country album that get progressively more psychedelic as it rambles on. Plus it's all sung in Finnish, so watch out for some vowel rolllin' action.
19Shearwater
Jet Plane and Oxbow

[4]

Shearwater go for the Coldplay/Radiohead stadium arcadium jugular without turning to shite and that's no mean feat at all.
20Black Mountain
IV

[4]

Is this the same whiffy psychedelic rock band that used to make me want to chew off my arms out of tedium? Yes, but now their stuff is only 'arm chewing bad' about 5% of the time. Bravo.
21Michael Kiwanuka
Love & Hate

[4]

Straightforward torch song big soul numbers with some guitar licks thrown in for good measure.
22Kornel Kovacs
The Bells

[4]

Doof doesn't just listen to depressing music (just mainly). This is 'upbeat' and 'fun', now shoot me.
23Brigid Mae Power
Brigid Mae Power

[4]

Trailing disembodied female folk vox, you're either on board or you ain't. I am, verrrr purdy stuff.
24Agnes Obel
Citizen Of Glass

[4]

In the face-off between the two most 'impressive if a little same-y' female folk albums of 2016 I'm declaring Brigid Mae Power the winner but really there's barely a folkster's tit in it.
25Danny Brown
Atrocity Exhibition

[4]

My introduction to the squawk, a little hit and miss but the madcap druggy vibe holds it all together.
26Wild Beasts
Boy King

[4]

One of the bigger risks of the year, this album was a massive departure and it off-sided some of the fanbase no doubt, but I'm on board with it. Shows some bollocks.
27Pantha Du Prince
The Triad

[3.9]

Pantha du ponce-y as ever, dem bells dem bells....still sound good.
28Current Value
Biocellulose

[3.9]

The latest instalment of my mid life crisis was getting back into sci-fi drum n bass/neurofunk this year and this is quite the banger.
29Anderson .Paak
Malibu

[3.9]

As each cvnting judge on the X Factor will tell you it helps if you have 'likability', this cat does, I can't help but always picture him merrily beating away on his drums while singing with that huge grin plastered on his chops.
30Andrew Weatherall
Covenanza

[3.9]

Props to Zak again for this one, this almost defies categorisation - at times he hits on the sort of 'effortless cool' atmosphere I always felt that be-sunglassed berk from LCD Soundsystem was aiming for.
31Bitchin' Bajas and Bonnie 'Prince
Epic Jammers and Fortunate Little Ditties

[3.8]

An easy album to laugh off due to the concept (a predominantly improvised psychedelic jam session centred around some sleepy Will Oldham vocals made up of him reading fortune cookie messages) but in its own way this is a little slice of perfection.
32The Hue
Aurora

[3.8]

A mix of hip hop, pop and neo-soul that feels effortless, has an almost Cannibal Ox mellow psychedelic feel and some well worked jazzy touches.
33Parquet Courts
Human Performance

[3.8]

Has a band established a perfect niche, one that they can then milk for an entire career, as quickly as Parquet Courts? I can say 'another great parquet Courts album' and already everyone knows the deal.
34Sturgill Simpson
A Sailor's Guide To Earth

[3.8]

This is as close as I go to honeyed vocal radio country, but here my man Sturgill brings the required top notch song writing and musical twists and turns to win me over.
35Christian Loeffler
Mare

[3.8]

Respect goes out to RadicalEd for this one, another excellent electronic release in a great year for them. The vocal tracks actually complement the album really well for once, the overall feel isn't dissimilar to Pantha du Prince though this has its own more contemplative thing going for it.
36William Tyler
Modern Country

[3.8]

American primitivism dressed up as widescreen americana dreamscapes, the best sort of 'background music' you could hope to find.
37The Field
The Follower

[3.8]

The Field are still ploughing that 'looping state of mind' furrow and there's nothing wrong with that.
38Edamame
Ochre

[3.8]

Soothing listen, I'm leaving it there (lazy).
39Yumi Zouma
Yoncalla

[3.7]

Unassuming synth pop that's easy to dismiss but repeat visits will reveal the songs are made of stronger stuff than you may have first given credit.
40Autolux
Pussy's Dead

[3.7]

Strong 90's influences abound, but it's like they've all been twisted and subverted beyond all recognition.
41Mothers
When You Walk A Long Distance You Are Tired

[3.7]

A little like Grizzly Bear fronted by a female singer, one whose voice can get a little yelp-y in places, but it's actually the unconventional quality to her vox that wins you over in the end.
42A Tribe Called Quest
We got it from Here… Thank You 4 Your service

[3.7]

A little patchy but pleasing to hear mellow hip hop in 2016 that doesn't feel like it has to mutate into neo r&b.
43Case/Lang/Veirs
Case/Lang/Veirs

[3.7]

The glossiest album on the list (well, this or Sturgill) and it can become a little sickly taken as a whole. Overall though this is a consistent set of faintly country flavoured pop rock toons.
44Leonard Cohen
You Want It Darker

[3.7]

Is this latest album by Cohen all that much stronger than his previous two releases? Probably not, but this one has the added focus in theme that comes from knowing, well, you're about to cark it. Solid stuff, if (as often is the case with Cohen) a little dry.
45Biosphere
Departed Glories

[3.7]

Ghostly sounding ambient, like a trip to an abandoned and haunted medieval monastery.
46Underworld
Barbara Barbara, we face a shining future

[3.7]

2016 was a veritable Jurassic Park of old acts you thought dead and buried (or as good as) but this brought all the post rave goods you could have hoped for without ever sounding like a total rehash.
47Vektor
Terminal Redux

[3.7]

This has been the 'moving target' of 2016 for me - one listen I'll find it too cheesy, other times I'm blown away. It's landed somewhere in the middle now.
48Mark Barrott
Sketches from An Island 2

[3.7]

More balearic tinged tropical island music, just a little bit of a sombre quality drifting into the mix this time.
49Gold Panda
Good Luck And Do Your Best

[3.6]

I still prefer the scrappier vibe of 'Lucky Shiner' to his more refined later work but this nevertheless retains that addictive glitchy collage quality.
50Cult of Luna and Julie Christmas
Mariner

[3.6]

Christmas 2016 sounds a lot like a banshee screaming.
51Noisia
Outer Edges

[3.6]

Noisia still doing the same stomping 'electronic genre grab bag' thing as they've been doing for a while now, but they're still great at it.
52RY X
Dawn

[3.6]

My most basic bitch pick of 2016, yeah he's ripping off Justin Vernon to an almost fraudulent degree and the cover is like a rejected 'nautical but nice' Topman hipster catalogue shot but...it's one of the best relaxing listens of 2016.
53NxWorries

So this list runs into 'slightly disappointing' albums where I expected more of certain artists (see: Bon Iver at a 3.2/5 rating). Where the cut off point is exactly...well, it's debatable.
