| Winter Break Films
Winter Break is almost over and my semester is about to start... so here's some films I saw over the break with sput ratings. Spoiler free. | 1 | | Black Moth Super Rainbow Dandelion Gum
Miller's Crossing (1990)
One of the Coen Brothers films I had yet to see. It was out of character for them since it had a realistic and serious style. Albert Finney and John Polito were particularly amazing in it.
4.5/5 | 2 | | Mercury Rev Boces
Barton Fink (1991)
Another Coen Brothers film I had yet to see and one that while based in comedy, ended up making me feel depressed. It's a period piece about Hollywood with the typical crazy Coen Brothers style. John Turturro and John Goodman are seriously some of my favorite actors of the last 20 years. It's interesting that the Coen Brothers had Turturro play a Jewish guy in both this and Miller's Crossing when isn't Jewish. I guess he looks Jewish?
5/5 | 3 | | Brainiac Hissing Prigs in Static Couture
The Commitments (1991)
Some Irish movie about some dude who wants to manage a soul group. It was okay, I only really watched it because I caught it on television. No spectacular plot points, but nothing terrible either.
3/5 | 4 | | Marvin Gaye What's Going On
Rushmore (1998)
I've been lazy with my Wes Anderson films, but yeah this ruled. Bill Murray is such a diverse kind of actor and I didn't really know who Olivia Williams was before the film, but she's also great. Hilarious film about a 15 year old that... well I feel like a synopsis won't really do it justice. It's Wes Anderson, Jason Schwartzman is the lead, and it's hilarious that's all I have to say.
4.5/5 | 5 | | Blue Men I Hear a New World
The Big Short (2015)
Honestly, this just came off as blockbuster Hollywood bullshit that no one is going to remember 5 years from now. Ryan Gosling's character was an annoying dick, and Steve Carrell's character was the only one I really found interest in. I kind of wish the movie was just about Carrell instead of jumping between 3 related stories.
2.5/5 | 6 | | Nine Inch Nails Not the Actual Events
Hail, Caesar! (2016)
The third and final Coen Brothers Film I saw this break. It was a commentary on 1950s Hollywood... wait where have I heard this before? The subtle gay themes were really interesting, especially during the Sailor scene, but the film seemed a little all over the place. It reminded me of Fargo mixed with Barton Fink minus any cohesive direction. The acting in it was flawless though, so I guess I'm still happy.
3.5/5 | 7 | | David Bowie Hunky Dory
Elle (2016)
If you check any movie on this list, make sure it's this one. It's a really fucked up French mystery/psychological thriller directed by the guy who id Starship Troopers. I guess the director has a range in genres. Hope you like subtitles though. Also, Isabelle Huppert is the lead.
5/5 | 8 | | Sonic Youth Kill Yr Idols
Florence Foster Jenkins (2016)
A silly biographical comedy starring Meryl Streep being so good at singing that she can pretend that she's awful at in while in character. It was incredibly silly, lighthearted (mostly,) so it was hard to hate. That dude from the Big Bang Theory was kind of shitty in it, but what else would you expect?
4/5 | 9 | | The Zombies Begin Here
Free State of Jones (2016)
Another period film that might be propaganda. I mean it's based on true events, but with our currently political climate, it almost comes off as though this was made as an anti-war, civil rights kind of film. With that said, the acting was great, the plot was cohesive, and despite a slow start, it kept my attention once the plot picked up.
4.5/5 | 10 | | The Knife Tomorrow, In a Year
Star Wars: Rogue One (2016)
I almost forgot this one since I saw it towards the beginning of my break. It did a good job of explaining some of the events that took place between Episode III and IV. Felicity Jones was kickass and I liked how the technique they used to include Tarkin and Leia.

01.28.17 | I might have seen more, but I don't remember them right now lol | YetAnotherBrick
01.28.17 | cool list. Rushmore is my 2nd favorite movie ever. and yee i feel the same way about Hail, Caesar! I liked when Ralph Fiennes was trying to direct that cowboy guy tho haha
i dug 10 pretty hard too | Chortles
01.28.17 | I liked the big short, goslings character was fking annoying though agreed | ArsMoriendi
01.28.17 | All 3 plots seemed underdeveloped, I feel like one of the plots could have been more flesh out if it was given the full 2 hours. | TVC15
01.28.17 | Hail, Caesar! was a boring, disappointing piece of shit tbh. All of Channing Tatum's scenes were awesome tho, especially the sailor dance sequence. The cowboy guy's first time on set of that drama movie was awesome too, although both of those scenes contribute nothing to its paper thin plot | ArsMoriendi
01.28.17 | Yeah, my biggest gripe was that the Scarlett Johansson subplot was a huge waste of time. If they cut it out, maybe they could have given the rest of the plot more development. | JWT155
01.28.17 | The Big Short is great | JeetJeet
01.29.17 | Big Short was awesome | neekafat
01.29.17 | Big Short is 5/5 | neekafat
01.29.17 | So is Miller's Crossing honestly | TVC15
01.29.17 | My comment didn't seem to go thru but Rogue One is also a ton better than that piece of shit Force Awakens which was literally like 2 hours of fan service which only achieved Holywood's goal at making every film being pumped out progressive with star of the film Fin being black and other dumb shit that infuriates me to think about. Mind you I'm a very casual Star Wars fan as well | ArsMoriendi
01.29.17 | I liked episode VII, but yeah Rouge One was definitely better. |
