capacity is a very human form of expression -- little moments of complete sincerity cradled by the gentle swaying of guitars. it is modest and real, tranquil in a way that can easily be confused with boredom, and paradoxically universal

an album that says everything, without saying anything at all. it breathes -- no -- hyperventilates with a zeal that is as much a part of it as the instruments themselves, and releases tension like a river that's become too voluminous for the dam that was built to hold it back.

the type of album that both deserves and ~~needs~~ a platform bigger than what i can provide, Beyond Death... is grotesque yet graceful, over in a second but felt for days, dancing across genres but still wholly of itself.

Brutalism

brutalism should be abrasive, but instead it's funny and evocative and, somehow, sort of endearing. Joe Talbot barks his witticisms like a belligerent, weathered poet who won't leave the dingy bar he's spent half his life sitting at, and the record's themes tear through pretense because it is absolutely vital they do so.

stand up straight. straighten your tie. take no prisoners.

Pleasure

pleasure is probably the most comfortable in its own skin out of any of the records on this list. i think Feist is only rivaled by Fiona Apple when it comes to singer-songwriters that are best at hiding the mechanics of their process with an atmosphere that feels purely organic. this record couldn't be indifferent if it tried, and neither could i about it.

some neo-soul that lives in a room awash with candlelight. it's not the kind of candlelight used for power outages either, but the kind that illuminates romanticism; that enacts a feeling of weightlessness on your intimate dinner-for-two.

Rap Album Two

in a skit at the beginning of 'LIVE From The Fuck You' jonwayne says his unassuming brand of hip-hop is "not that great" and i am going to have to respectfully disagree. this one came from left-field earlier this year as if it was shoved onto centre stage, and it shows. this record doesn't belong under harsh light -- it belongs in basements and in friendship circles, to float like weed smoke and to sympathise like your favourite poems.

these words are everything.

Ocean Grave

an album that doesn't enhance moods so much as it creates them, it runs through all the shades of blue until blue is your favourite colour. this one doesn't deserve to be forgotten, and i forgot it; for shame
