06.20.17 | Only got to say so much about all these. Sputnik only lets you put so much in the description boxes. Was gonna do a top ten, but it fluctuates so much. However, my top five has remained almost always definite. |
butcherboy
06.20.17 | needs The Fly starring Jeff Golblum.. |
Papa Universe
06.20.17 | Ever seen Children of Men. That's a movie that changed me and made me recognise directorship for the first time. |
JWT155
06.20.17 | The Godfather is both a better gangster film then Goodfellas and a better Coppola film than Apocalypse Now. |
guitarded_chuck
06.20.17 | good ass list tbh
there will be blood is probably in my top 10
im a kubrick fan boy and about 4 out of top 5 would be kubrick films including full metal jacket (shout out to barry lyndon most underappreciated movie ever) |
Papa Universe
06.20.17 | Alien is probably the best 'horror' film to watch as an 11-year-old. It scares you enough, but never to a point of mental breakdown. |
Kalopsia
06.20.17 | good list, good descriptions |
DoofusWainwright
06.20.17 | Good picks, they'd all make my top 40. Guess I'd go with these basic bitch choices:
- Eraserhead
- Apocalypse Now
- LOTR: The Two Towers
- The Matrix
- Spirited Away
|
butcherboy
06.20.17 | matrix? really, Doof? |
Kalopsia
06.20.17 | Matrix does kinda stick out there. |
JWT155
06.20.17 | People tend to be spoiled now with the direction sci fi's gone and the sequels tainted it's prestige, but The Matrix revolutionized film and reinvigorated the sci fi genre. It's one of the biggest milestones in action cinema. |
DoofusWainwright
06.20.17 | The first Matrix film is an action movie classic, was obsessed with it at the time. It's maybe hard to take seriously now but it's one of those where most every scene is a classic. I realise it's as kitsch as an Arnie movie looking back now but I suppose it's the dreaded 'guilty pleasure' |
Corney
06.20.17 | Yeah a top 5 list is hard but this would be mine I guess in order.
-Pulp Fiction
-A Clockwork Orange
-There Will be Blood
- No Country for Old Men
- Synecdoche, New York
|
Joeman82
06.20.17 | Needs more No Countey For Old Men, Pulp Fiction, and probably an Edgar Wright film |
Corney
06.20.17 | The first Matrix movie is fantastic. It is one of the greatest sci-fi movie universes of all time. Then it crashed and burned. |
JWT155
06.20.17 | Casablanca |
Corney
06.20.17 | I am really looking forward to seeing Edgar Wright's new film Baby Driver. |
Kalopsia
06.20.17 | Y COM NO1 HAS SAID BOONDOCK SAINTS? OBVI BEST MOOVIE EVUR |
DoofusWainwright
06.20.17 | 'Spoiled now with the direction sci fi's gone'
Really? I'd take The Matrix over Arrival, Interstellar, Gravity, Matt Damon on Mars and the horrifically shit recent Alien films. Ex Machina was great I guess but I'd say people are starved of quality Science fiction right now :/ |
IronGiant
06.20.17 | there will be blood would be in my top 10 prob, but idt top 5... in no particular order:
her
the breakfast club
before... trilogy (so hard to pick one, but if I had to, maybe before midnight?)
the tale of princess kaguya (with whisper of the heart and mononoke very close behind)
willy wonka (the original obviously) maybe idk this is hard |
claygurnz
06.20.17 | Platoon and Apoc Now>>>>Full Metal Jacket imo |
JWT155
06.20.17 | I'm speaking in the general sense of how fantastic and over the top science fiction and action movies in general have become with CGI. Trust me, I'd take The Matrix as well as a hos tof older films with more stunt work any day over a lot of the stuff being pumped out now, I was just making the observation that many kids/adults nowadays are spoiled with how easily even a low budget film can create over the top action sequences. A kid nowadays watches the matrix and yawns because fast & the furious 69 has thousands of explosions, gun shots, naked girls, etc. It's hard for that person to truly grasp the significance and awe of viewing a film like the matrix for the first time before the turn of the century when literally no film had ever been mad elike it. Now, films try to emulate it every year, just look at a flick like Ghost in the Shell (or whatever its called).
Also, Mad Max Fury Road is a modern masterpiece. |
JWT155
06.20.17 | Barry Lyndon was my Dad's favorite film growing up, took me years to truly appreciate it and now it's one of my favorites. |
tempest--
06.20.17 | where's RoboCop |
DoofusWainwright
06.20.17 | Mad Max Fury Road is another classic, I'm with you there JWT. I guess I was just thinking a lot of the current crop of sci fi is a little overrated and in the case of something like Interstellar a little too obvious in its own self seriousness. Not that it's a terrible film, just a little messy and pompous. |
Koris
06.20.17 | Spirited Away |
JWT155
06.20.17 | I completely agree, I was speaking purely in terms of special effects. Kids today just don't understand how jaw dropping it was seeing something like bullet time. |
TheMagicalBlender
06.20.17 | @UniqueUniverse: Never seen it, though I've heard great things about it. Definitely on my to do list. And Alien never really scared me either, but it was creepy and had amazing atmosphere. The only horror film that ever made me breakdown was The Exorcist.
@butcherboy: Hey man, the Matrix is one of the greatest action movies ever. |
mikep87
06.20.17 | Pulp Fiction, Goodfellas and Apocalypse Now are my top three... so really solid list, Alien is sick also. Couldn't get into there will be blood, will have to give it another shot one day. |
Egarran
06.20.17 | Great list. Thunderous applause for There Will Be Blood. DDL is scary good.
Agree with The Matrix and Children of Men.
For Ghibli I would choose Spirited Away. A perfect trip.
For Edgar Wright, Hot Fuzz.
I like Fight Club. It's easy to hate, but not really, because it's fantastic. |
DoofusWainwright
06.20.17 | I'll have to watch it again on a decent screen, guess the effects are a bit clunky now but it was a bit of a homage to manga and Kung fu films so you could argue it was always a little retro by design. I agree 'bullet time' isn't going to make anyone fall off their seats in 2017 |
TheMagicalBlender
06.20.17 | @tempest--: I actually love Robocop and it might be in my top ten. |
butcherboy
06.20.17 | I was 13 when the matrix came out.. guess I should have been more in awe.. dunno.,.
my top 5, roughly, with plenty subsitutions:
Trainspotting
Pink Flamingos
Grande Belleza
Godfather (plus flashback scenes from Godfather II)
Chinese Coffee
|
JWT155
06.20.17 | The Godfather
Casablanca
Dr. Strangelove
There Will Be Blood
The Good, the Bad and the Ugly |
bloc
06.20.17 | The Thing
The Prestige
The Usual Suspects |
DoofusWainwright
06.20.17 | Trainspotting is top 10
'Chinese Coffee'? |
Rik VII
06.20.17 | Noone asked for my opinion but hey, here it is anyway:
There Will Be Blood is pretty awesome. Alien is very good. Can't stand Full Metal Jacket. Found it boring except for the first third. Goodfellas was good. Same goes for Apocalypse Now. Only saw the Redux version so it goes without saying that it dragged a lot for me in places. They're all well-made without a doubt, but on the other hand, all of them are American "entry-level" stuff. Nothing wrong with that in general, but there needs to be more general love for non-English language movies.
I'm too lazy to make a top 5 myself, but it would definitely include Dead Ringers by David Cronenberg and at least one movie by Park Chan-wook, probably even 2. |
butcherboy
06.20.17 | al pacino/jerry orbach, very new York movie based on a play.. two failed writers piss and moan in a shitty apartment.. I love it!! required watching for 'writers..' |
Kalopsia
06.20.17 | it's a wee bit pretentious in a few scenes, but The Fountain is in my top 5 |
Corney
06.20.17 | Trainspotting is in my top 10 too for sure. It's is definitely my favorite movie about drugs. Better than Requiem for a Dream for sure. I haven't seen Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas though. |
butcherboy
06.20.17 | A bout de souffle should really be on mine as well.. 5 is a limiting number, fuck.. |
DoofusWainwright
06.20.17 | I'll try and track it down butcher |
Rik VII
06.20.17 | "it's a wee bit pretentious in a few scenes, but The Fountain is in my top 5"
I think it's really underrated. I mean, it definitely wouldn't make my top 5 or 10 or things like that, but a lot of people don't even seem to try to see what a good movie it really is. |
butcherboy
06.20.17 | can dropbox if you don't, but last I checked, torrents of it were floating around.. |
polyrhythm
06.20.17 | The Assassination of Jesse James By the Coward Robert Ford
2001: A Space Odyssey
Mad Max: Fury Road
Drowning By Numbers
Only Lovers Left Alive |

06.20.17 | Pulp Fiction
Oldboy (Korean Version)

06.20.17 | Every week i change my top 5, it's hard to say |
Rik VII
06.20.17 | "literally no film had ever been mad elike it. Now, films try to emulate it every year, just look at a flick like Ghost in the Shell (or whatever its called)."
DUDE, Matrix stole a lot from the original Ghost in the Shell movie. It's the other way around, so to say |
N2B3J
06.20.17 | Not definitive, but this usually consists of my top 5 (when really I said 8...)
Two Towers (Although, I consider them all to be my #1 pick)
In Bruges (For fuck sake, this movie...)
Princess Bride/Holy Grail (I like my comedies and it switches up)
There Will Be Blood (Already being circle-jerked here)
Pan's Labyrinth (Love the atmosphere, the story, and the soundtrack)
|
Corney
06.20.17 | Oh man I love me some Enemy. I watched that with a bunch of people who don't like weird/surreal films and surprisingly it didn't ruin my watching experience. Usually their obvious discomfort would ruin that for me which is why I prefer to watch films alone. |
Zig
06.20.17 | Must say, Goodfellas is good but kinda sucks. Le Samurai, by Jean-Pierre Melville, is the best gangster/crime film. |
guitarded_chuck
06.20.17 | "The Assassination of Jesse James By the Coward Robert Ford
2001: A Space Odyssey"
my man
"Dr. Strangelove
There Will Be Blood
The Good, the Bad and the Ugly"
great stuff right here too, everyone should watch strangelove if you havent, relevant story now as ever |
Risodo
06.20.17 | Agreed dude. Jake Gyllenhaal is one of the best of our generation, and putting his abilities in a Saramago narrative was brilliant. |
zakalwe
06.20.17 | Anyone seen silence? Loved it, absolutely bloody loved it. |
Muppelope
06.20.17 | Great list. My top 5:
1. There Will Be Blood
2. Drive
3. The Social Network
4. No Country For Old Men
5. A Clockwork Orange |
butcherboy
06.20.17 | Silence was indeed fuckign amazing, and the best Scorsese has done in a loooong time.. |
Risodo
06.20.17 | Huge fan of Scorsese, i need to check out this movie |
Risodo
06.20.17 | No Country For Old Men is a gem too. Javier Bardem is a hell of a villain. |
zakalwe
06.20.17 | Cool butcher. The hairs on me neck were up at one point, I'm sure it flopped because of it's religious set-up but it's one of the best films for years. |
butcherboy
06.20.17 | there's two kinds of films Scorsese does brilliantly.. gangster biopics and manifesting his Catholic malfunctions.. it's also nice to be reminded that Liam Neeson is a decent actor once in a while.. |
Chortles
06.20.17 | enemy was stellar, definitely villeneuve's best from what i've seen of his (still gotta check prisoners) |
Muppelope
06.20.17 | Enemy is better than Prisoners I'd say, haven't seen Sicario yet though. As far as Gyllenhaal goes, as much as I love his performance in Enemy, I prefer Zodiac and Nightcrawler. My god is Nightcrawler a spectacular movie. |
guitarded_chuck
06.20.17 | okay fuck it here we go
1. 2001: A Space Odyssey
2. Lord of the Rings
3. A Clockwork Orange
4. The Good, The Bad and The Ugly
5. Barry Lyndon
6. Interstellar
7. Full Metal Jacket
8. The Godfather
9. There Will Be Blood
10. Moon
HM: Dr. Strangelove, Eyes Wide Shut, Lock Stock and Two Smoking Barrels, Snatch, Assassination of Jesse James, The Dark Knight, Schindler's List, WALL-E, Toy Story, Lion King, Rocky, Into The Wild, Inglorious Basterds, The Revenant
im definitely not thinking of of a few essential ones right now but anyway theres some of my favorites |
Risodo
06.20.17 | Nightcrawler is his best movie. I like all of his movies to be honest, so i'll add Donnie Darko and Source Code too. |
guitarded_chuck
06.20.17 | shouts out to jarhead, underrated jake g flick |
Risodo
06.20.17 | Great picks dude. But im still think that Eyes Wide Shut is overrated as hell. |

"6. Interstellar"
eww lol |
guitarded_chuck
06.20.17 | thanks man

Kalopsia
06.20.17 | Monty Python and the Holy Grail is top 5 |
Muppelope
06.20.17 | Haven't seen source code yet either, need to get on that. I still can't decide how I feel about Donnie darko. It goes back and forth for me every time I watch it. |
dbizzles
06.20.17 | All good picks, except I haven't seen Apocalypse Now. It would be very hard for me to hash out a top-5.
Surprised bloc is the only person to mention The Prestige yet. That movie fucking rules so hard. |
JWT155
06.20.17 | "DUDE, Matrix stole a lot from the original Ghost in the Shell movie. It's the other way around, so to say"
I was speaking in terms of live action film, I know that the orginal Ghost in the Shell was a great influence on the Wachoski Brothers, but the newest film is very much influenced by the Matrix. |
JWT155
06.20.17 | Eyes Wide shut barely missed my list Chuck, I agree, I think it's one of Kubrick's most under rated films and to me also one of his scariest, the scenes where Cruise is at the party in the mansion with the chilling music just spooks the shit out of me. |
guitarded_chuck
06.20.17 | nice man, yeah its super freaky, so dark like i said and honestly its totally believable that there weird ass cult like secret society orgy parties that go on like that |
