| My (Cruddy) Vinyl Collection
So yeah since I graduated, my dad got me my first vinyl player; since then I’ve switched over to a Sony USB turntable which (thank God) has the capability to record my records. Only complaint really is that it tends to record with the right channel being quieter than the left but otherwise it’s pretty solid. List is the bunch of vinyls I’ve wasted alotta money on (roughly in chronological order) | 1 | | The Jimi Hendrix Experience Electric Ladyland
2010 Remaster - 180 gram 2x LP
My first vinyl, discounting the Hybrid Theory one my dad bought and ended up having some skips. Played this relentlessly when this was still the only one I had. The packaging is sweet and the booklet detailing the recording of the album and such is an amazing addition. | 2 | | Twenty One Pilots Vessel
Limited Edition Clear Vinyl/Blue
Idgaf, still album is still a hard jam since I first heard it 4 years ago. Has only gotten better with time for me. Aside from a fair amount of surface noise, it sounds really good while retaining a lot of the bass on the CD. | 3 | | Linkin Park The Hunting Party
2x LP - etched D side
Sounds a hell of a lot better than the CD, and hell I can hear Page’s guitar on All for Nothing now, even if it is still slightly drowned. | 4 | | My Chemical Romance The Black Parade
2x LP - etched D side
Wowowow. I can finally hear the bass and the demented vocals on Momma’s climax stick out way more. | 5 | | Linkin Park Living Things
Regular Black Vinyl
I went into purchasing more vinyls with a certain criteria: collectability and accessibility on Soulseek. I kinda didn’t want to buy this but I’ve always wanted to hear what the album would sound like without it being ruined by the Rick Rubin effect. Not only does the vinyl still retain a lot of that heavy bass from the CD but a lot of atmospheric things stick out more and I can finally discern the electric guitar on songs like Burn it Down more. | 6 | | Spiritualized Ladies and Gentlemen We Are Floating in Space
Spiritualized - Ladies and Gentlemen
180 gram 2x LP - 2010 Reissue
Oh man I almost had a heart attack when I spotted this while aimlessly skimming through the S artists in the vinyl section. I came to the record store that day with getting a specific album in mind but I immediately ditched it for Ladies and Gentlemen immediately, don’t remember what it was tho. There’s a fair amount of surface noise but it isn’t too bad. | 7 | | Thirty Seconds To Mars A Beautiful Lie
2016 Black Vinyl
I quite liked the picture disc rips on Soulseek but I really wanted to hear the album without the extra surface noise. This pressing particularly sounds awesome and there’s no long gap between A Modern Myth and Praying for a Riot which was much appreciated by me. | 8 | | Christian Death Only Theatre of Pain
Limited Edition Pink (with swirls?) Vinyl
The edition I copped puzzles me a fair bit since I could not find a pink vinyl of this album on Google images and Discogs, let alone a similar pressing from the 4AD record company which matches this packaging to some extent from the incorrect addition of a non-existing sixth track on Side A called Before Prayer, the brown album cover, etc. The coloring job itself looks somewhat iffy with the stray white and black amid the pink and reddish swirls but nonetheless, the packaging looks great and it sounds just as great. | 9 | | Neutral Milk Hotel In the Aeroplane Over the Sea
180 gram Vinyl
I liked the packaging just a little more on the CD where the fold-out lyric sheet is separate from the card representing the album cover being made like a post card. Although some songs don’t sound as good as the CD (like Holland, 1945 which lacks some of the punch which made it stand out so much to me in the first place) but goddam the bass on Communist Daughter. | 10 | | Prince Purple Rain
Limited Edition Picture Disc
According to Discogs, this was pressed just this year, 2017. This was an impulsive grab but I don’t regret it at all. The surface noise is hardly there, little to no popping and sounds just about as good as the best pressed vinyls in my collection. The bass on this is quite nice too. | 11 | | Ministry Psalm 69
180 gram Vinyl
The cashier who rang me up at Barnes N Noble told me “Nice choice.” So I said to him, “You like Ministry, huh?” To which he responded, “LOVE industrial rock, and these guys were the godfathers of that genre. Jesus Built My Hotrod is a classic.” | 12 | | The Stooges Fun House
Limited Edition 2017 Colored Vinyl/Orange - Rhino Records Pressing
$17 was a steal for this baby. I hope it was anyway. | 13 | | Iggy Pop The Idiot
2017 Remaster - Regular Black Vinyl
Sounds pretty great, although I wish I hadn’t overlooked seeing a 180 gram pressing of this. | 14 | | Beach House Depression Cherry
Regular Black Vinyl
Just… wow. Absolutely stunning album that grew very hard as I began to spin this regularly since I copped it. Pretty underrated, actually. And that packaging feels just as fuzzy as it looks. | 15 | | Bauhaus In the Flat Field
Regular Black Vinyl
I hadn’t paid this particular attention until recently. Unfortunately this ended up being one of the worst pressings in my collection; the surface noise isn’t distracting but man the popping. I’m cool with popping, sometimes it’s charming when they aren’t loud and flagrant and infrequent; but on here they can be small and every so often but also often loud and flagrant and often. It’s a damn great album, though, and I’m unwilling to part with it because of that. | 16 | | Godspeed You! Black Emperor F♯ A♯ ∞ [Vinyl]
Regular Black Vinyl
This didn’t actually completely click with me until I dropped the needle on Side A. It’s really quite something to just sit and take in all of the sounds emanating from the 4 speaker set up my dad made for me. | 17 | | The Cars Moving in Stereo: The Best of The Cars
180 gram 2x LP
To quote my soundoff and RYM review:
The packaging and overall sound for the 180 gram double LP vinyl is fantastic, Ric was not fucking around when he personally remastered these songs. It's a refreshing change from the old, worn out CD of the band's previous greatest hits which I've inherited from my dad. This is highly recommended to anyone who loves this band's singles as much as I do, however, what prevents this from being the perfect bundle is the glaring omission of Let the Good Times Roll which is probably the band's second best song (first being I'm Not the One).
This is also the best pressed vinyl in my collection with unnoticeable surface noise and no popping at all. | 18 | | MGMT Congratulations
2014 Record Store Day Remaster - 180 gram 2x LP
The second best sounding pressing in my collection with borderline unnoticeable surface noise and only one instance of flagrant popping. Otherwise I’m extremely impressed; found it for $30 at the record shop and had no idea about how special this pressing is until I looked it up on Discogs. The CD is in my opinion the greatest sounding brickwalled album that I’ve heard but it’s refreshing hearing these songs sound a little bit calmer. | 19 | | Marilyn Manson The Pale Emperor
Limited Edition White Vinyl - 180 gram 2x LP
Includes the 3 bonus acoustic tracks. The packaging kicks ass and the sound is simply stunning. Slight surface noise and minor popping makes this probably the third best sounding vinyl in my collection. | |

07.17.17 | I'm too addicted | Frippertronics
07.17.17 | research labels and pressing plants
it'll save you a lot of trouble with shitty sounding records
for example, until this year's reissue of The Idiot, there was the godawful 4 Men With Beard pressing to deal with
also, get Discogs to catalogue your records
ex (aka excuse to share collections): https://www.discogs.com/user/BookofGenesis/collection | TVC15
07.17.17 | Oh yeah, I do use Discogs to catalogue and look up reviews for records' sound quality, but the only review for that Bauhaus one said that it sounded great... | Dewinged
07.17.17 | Your collection is growing fast. Good stuff dude. | Frippertronics
07.17.17 | well, what pressing was it?
it also depends on your copy as I've seen several records I own get bad reviews due to its mastering, pressing quality, etc. And as soon as I give it a spin, it sounds great. | GmemberKills
07.17.17 | some cool stuff
also avoid picture discs if you are seeking best sound quality. they might look nice, but they always sound inferior to standard pressings, and generate more noise | TVC15
07.17.17 | I don't really remember, the copyright on the packaging still said its original release year of 1980 and I tried to find a copy on Discogs that matched the tracklist and record label publisher
Assuming we're still talking about In the Flat Field | Dewinged
07.17.17 | I got a Whirr's album on picture disc last week and it sounds... well, it's shoegaze so it sounds as it should. But yeah quality may drop a bit. | TVC15
07.17.17 | Eh. I just got super lucky with mine, it sounds just fine to me | Drifter
07.18.17 | Nice | Nazzadan
07.18.17 | Noice, I need to upload my list with my new pickups | Dewinged
07.18.17 | tbh TVC my speakers are not very good so I wouldn't notice it either. | ConcubinaryCode
07.18.17 | I got burning from the inside a few days back and 4 men with beards pressed it. I was pretty bummed how bad it was. | Frippertronics
07.18.17 | TVC, always go by catalogue numbers and what's etched in the deadwax
a lot of labels don't do the proper edits when it comes to reissues so they can reduce costs (see the recent US Elliot Smith reissues that were pressed using the old Plain Recordings plates, which are infamous for their horrendous quality (Plain in general is to be avoided) | Frippertronics
07.18.17 | I'll post a shortlist of labels to avoid because with the revival, a lot of scummy labels have appeared and/or thrived on cheap reissues | TVC15
07.18.17 | Thanks Fripp | Frippertronics
07.18.17 | no problemmmm
the list
Plain Recordings (recordings of reference: MBV - Loveless, Elliot Smith - Figure 8 / XO, the Mr. Bungle discography)
4 Men With Beards (recordings of reference: Iggy Pop - The Idiot / Lust for Life, Big Star - Third)
1972 (recordings of reference: Aphex Twin - RDJ Album / SAW Vol. II, Stereolab - Dots and Loops, Swans - The Burning World)
Back on Black (this one isn't as bad as the others, but take care to pay attention as to whether or not their reissues are sourced from analog masters)
BaDaBing (did some rather poor reissues of Talk Talk's last few albums and Mark Hollis' solo album over the last few years)
Rhino (probably the best label out of this list, but like BoB, make sure you know what the reissue is sourced from, who mastered it and what plant it came from)
Also, at any cost, avoid absolutely anything done by Scorpio. Everything they do is sourced from CDs and they work with several of these reissue labels, including Rhino. Their work can be traced if you noticed a 180 gram sticker like this on the front: http://vinyljunkies.co/wp-content/uploads/2015/09/180g.jpg | Frippertronics
07.18.17 | it is also of importance to check out Steve Hoffman's forum
ask whatever you need to and you'll be guaranteed to get a solid answer most of the time, and they know lot about this shit, so I highly suggest checking it out | Dewinged
07.18.17 | Godsent Frip, many thanks. | TVC15
07.18.17 | [2] | Mort.
07.18.17 | youre right, this is a cruddy collection
then again so was mine when i first started | Nazzadan
07.18.17 | Thanks Fripp, I have gotten a couple Back on Blacks one one was fantastic (Paranoid) and one was VERY poor (don't remember what it was, but it was a remaster that used a very poor CD reissue from like a decade ago as the "base" I guess)
I'll just avoid them going forward unless I do research first into the quality of the finished product. | GmemberKills
07.18.17 | Yo fripp really appreciate that list. | 50iL
07.19.17 | Awesome job Fripp, I've always stayed away from all those
Here is my collection: https://www.discogs.com/user/yagitoaguirre/collection | Dewinged
07.19.17 | Oh man, I still gotta add my stuff to discogs | Davil667
07.19.17 | I would really like to recommend the "Music on Vinyl" label, they do a fantastic job with reissuing albums. Almost all my pressings under this label are amazing quality. | Minushuman24
07.19.17 | Nothing is cruddy if you like it < 3
except for thirty seconds to mars
| AsleepInTheBack
07.19.17 | Some cool stuff in here. Would love 3, just to see the difference in sound. 16 is fantastic. | Frippertronics
07.19.17 | foil, hand over the eno and nobody'll get hurt | TVC15
07.19.17 | Thanks for the info Davil, I'll definitely keep a look out for that one | AlexKzillion
07.19.17 | Ooh shit nice collection... hoping to start my own soon | AsleepInTheBack
07.19.17 | dont do it, you wallet will hate you forever | starboystargirl

07.19.17 | "I would really like to recommend the "Music on Vinyl" label, they do a fantastic job with reissuing albums. Almost all my pressings under this label are amazing quality."
All my slowdive records are done by them and they sound absolutely amazing, easily some of the best sounding in my collection | Drifter
07.19.17 | I need more vinyl | chemicalkid44
02.28.18 | 4 is a classic. props on 2 though, that album is amazing and it gets very little praise in my opinion. | Sharkattack
07.21.18 | Some good stuff here | TVC15
07.22.18 | I've got like... 3x the records on here now and goddam it's already been almost exactly a year since this list
Ironic I said I was unwilling to part with In the Flat Field when I ended up selling it | 50iL
07.22.18 | Update pls | Sharkattack
07.22.18 | Aw man I just listened to in the flat field like 5 minutes ago and it was great | TVC15
07.22.18 | Oh yeah it's a fantastic album, the pressing just wasn't the best |
