Hidden gems
Stuff that I think deserves more attention/unknown ear candies. Check it out. |
1 | | The monorchid Who put out the fire?
Cool 90s post-punk with snotty vocals and at times insane noodly guitars |
2 | | Zeus! Opera
Bass and drum metal duo. Sort of thrash + punk and creepy keyboard overdubs. Very heavy and fun. |
3 | | Babbletron Mechanical Royalty
Criminally undiscovered this hip hop group made a killer record with experimental beats and almost 0%wackness. Probably the first underground hip hop record I heard and it still gets listened to on a regular basis over a decade later. Been recc'ing this for years but still needs more love. |
4 | | Ex Models Other Mathematics
Maybe if talking heads played weirder time signatures and didn't listen to so much fela kuti they would've sounded like this. Maybe. |
5 | | FIRE NUNS Dad, jr
Although not nearly as rambunctious and full of punk energy as their live shows, this is a good representation of youthful exuberance and well-crafted songwriting from a band that wasn't legally allowed to drink at the time. |
6 | | Baklavaa Dane On
God I love this fucking album. Very noisy and unapproachable at first... but subtle melodies and hidden in there somewhere. Definitely loud but also slow and grooves to the max. The drummer plays with no crash so it's a lot of 6/8 time sort of beats that are as pelvis-thrust-y as they are headbang-y. Lots of distorted bass and noise. |
7 | | The Festival of Dead Deer The Many Faces of Mental Illness
Lots of versions of this according to discogs but the record I have of this slays for days. |
8 | | Fly Pan Am Ceux Qui Inventent N'ont Jamais VĂ©cu (?)
I guess technically this is a Godspeed side project and I guess technically it doesn't have enough ratings. |
9 | | Skull Kontrol Zzzzz
Sort of 90's math. Not sure how to describe this. |
10 | | The Coathangers The Coathangers
Silly punk that's also heartfelt. Really funny and simple. They have quite the catalog but start with the first and go from there. |
11 | | Black Eyes Black Eyes
This isn't totally unknown but pjorn wrote an extremely good review for this and it's a great album so check it out |
12 | | Palberta Bye Bye Berta
Weird and lo-fi. Lots of off-kilter rhythms and strange melodies. Very weird. Contains a weird cover of " stayin' alive." A bunch of weird short songs, around the one minute mark, and weird structures. Did I mention weird? |
13 | | The Blood False Gestures for a Devious Public
This record is very ambitious, especially for punk. Catchy but gnarley, fast but tuneful, punk with variety. It borders on Oi! But isn't cheap and has some really interesting lyrics and subject matter. |
14 | | Cats And Cats And Cats Mother Whale
I haven't checked the ratings on this but I'm sore it's low. |
15 | | The Chinese Stars Heaven On Speed Dial
Sassy and dance-y. All three of their albums are good and it's fun to listen to their progressions. |
16 | | Arab on Radar Rough Day At The Orifice
Classic noise band and very STUPID in a good way |
17 | | Christian Death Only Theatre of Pain
Not that underrated but still unappreciated. Cool gothic post-punk with a depressed Frieza on vocals. |
18 | | Coke Bust Lines In The Sand
Not super into straight-edge hardcore but this band wails. |
19 | | The Crucifucks The Crucifucks
Annoying weird punk with a pissed of Steve Buscemi on vocals |
20 | | The Dead Milkmen Big Lizard in My Backyard
This has 72 ratings. For shame Sputnik! |
21 | | Emmylou Harris Elite Hotel
She's big in the country world but Sputnik has slept on her. She's got a pretty good catalog of consistent albums but most of them are cobers. Her original songs are mediocre at best. |
22 | | Fearless Iranians From Hell Foolish Americans / Holy War / Die for Allah
This fucking band. Thrashing punk with and outrageous concept. No wonder this band never got big. B |
23 | | Fela Kuti The '69 Los Angeles Sessions
HUGE in Africa and other parts of the world. However, this Nigerian genius never broke through in the US with his brand of adfro jazz-funk. Tony Allen is one of the best drummers ever. |
24 | | Hangedup Kicker In Tow
Clang-y Ass post rock |
25 | | Pink and Brown Shame Fantasy II
Lightning Bolt-esque from the singer of thee oh sees |
26 | | Soiled Doves Soiled Doves
Post-punk with racket vocals from the high-pitched singer of the blood brothers. The guitar work is neat |
27 | | Ornette Coleman Change of the Century
Everyone loves shape of jazz but his whole discography is pretty phenomenal. |
28 | | Nobunny Love Visions
Punk rock but lo-fi and singer-songwriter vibes. Really fun and simple. |
29 | | Killdozer Burl
Mean guy vocals and strange noise punk |
30 | | Cows Daddy Has A Tail!
Well shit I just wrote a review for this but I still think it needs more attention. |
31 | | John Lydon Psycho's Path
Lydons solo shit has gone largely unnoticed but there is s lot of great stuff here especially if you are high. The title track sort of sounds like what Radiohead would do for a few albums. |
32 | | JFA We Know You Suck
Skate punk. Classic |
33 | | Hot Nerds Strategically Placed Bananas
Noisyass synth hardcore punk. |
34 | | Foxy Shazam Gonzo
This album in particular. Mostly this band sucks with their anthemic stadium bullshit... but this record... holy shit does it hit me like a ton of bricks every time I hear it |
35 | | Del tha Funkee Homosapien No Need For Alarm
I think dels solo albums are really good and people should get over 3030 a bit |
36 | | Articles of Faith Complete, Vol. 1: 1981-1983
Great political punk containing one of the most epic punk songs in history, "false security" |
37 | | Battalion of Saints Death-R-Us
Another great punk band overlooked |
