Diddle Arche 5: rec anything 2 (electric boogaloo)

Alright, so this is the last round before I start on albums and you don't hear from me at 6 month intervals (or something like that), so I figured I'd make it a good old fashioned 'rec anything' round. Good luck all :]

Same old rules, legal streams etc. etc. you know the drill ^ ^

adr has immunity for this round! 2 people are being eliminated (thanks Caiman for the reminder).

Again, good luck!!

A Solitary Reign

tacos N stuff

A beautiful, crushing piece of music – very smoothly done, getting this in before I checked it. The opening melody is beautiful, yet sounds like some kind of adapted European plague song from the 17th century – moving stuff. Was interesting to hear some low-end vox from them, if only for a moment. Colin’s panicked, heart-destroying hardcore yell is still king though. 4.3/5.0.

Since Yesterday

Ryus

Seated firmly in that alternative field of 80s synthpop, Since Yesterday is a great juxtaposition of twee musical elements and intriguingly melancholic, dark lyrics. Short enough that it doesn’t overstay its welcome (it’s reasonably repetitive), the track is decently catchy. I’m fairly sure this was the kinda thing my mum loved growing up at the time. 3.7/5.0.

King Park

CaimanJesus

Ho. Ly. Shit. I think the relatively simple backing of this works quite well to push the harrowing story to the frontline – story aside this is good but not much more, until the last couple of minutes which harbour an intensity that blew me away. Really, really powerful and strong on its visualising ability. 3.9/5.0.

Tree of Suffocating Souls

Flugmorph

Man, how badass is this? The vox are, really, a little goofy, but there’s something counterintuitively cool about them at the same time, that I can’t help but love them. Considering this is poking the arse of 8 minutes it goes super quickly, all the while prompting headbobs and the like at every available moment. Really interesting take on death/doom/stuff. 4.2/5.0.

The 15th

adr

There’s that one verse before I think the second course where I can’t take the vox seriously, as they sound like Frank Spencer from Some Mothers Do ‘Ave ‘Em is behind the mic, but aside from that this is a really neat, compact piece of post-punk with some Dire Strait-y synths in the background. The what it’s worth, very good. 3.8/5.0.

This is is this?

Aberf

Ling doing as Ling do. I’ve heard better from them (the one I accidentally listened to a round or two back [sorry Flug] was definitely more resonant), but I don’t think I’ve not heard a track by this lot yet that I’ve not gone ‘well that was sweet’ at the end. 3.9/5.0.

In the Wake of Poseidon

Frippertronics

My first exposure to King Crimson, and what an exposure. I LOVED this. I understand this is Greg’s last contribution of vox for the group, but what a voice that man had – something intangible about it that just hits me right in the heart every time I hear it. This was 8 minutes of gorgeous, wonderfully composed prog, and tbh I could’ve gone for another 8 (I did in the end – elected to listen again). 4.4/5.0.

Through Silver in Blood

Locust Star

50iL

This track got me off my arse and, at the time of writing, I’ve checked two Neurosis albums this week. Blindingly heavy, well-paced, and those little ‘mechanical squeals’ (hope you know what I’m talking about) add such a menacing flavour to the track. Great stuff. 4.2/5.0.

Visions of Psychic Dismemberment

Astral Abortis

This is the kind of murk I LOVE. The bass section of this is like a stampeding horde – and every single time I hear a little flurry of kick drum, a little sick grin comes up inside my head. This is a 2017 release right? Will definitely have to get on this. 4.3/5.0.

Tribal Convictions

bgillesp

Given prog thrash isn’t something which has ever really appealed, I was somewhat sceptical of hearing this. I was, however, pleasantly surprised. The first bit was cool I suppose, but definitely paled once the thrash m/ came in – for all the quirked songwriting, all I really want to do it seems is bang my head like an idiot. Oh well. 3.9/5.0.

Conduit

Conduit

cryptologous

This was kind of a mixture of trad doom, stoner doom and a little bit of post-metal, rolled into one FAT DOINT. The first half was pretty cool, but the second half, with those choirs, those growls – exceptional. These guys are from Brighton too, so I feel like I’ve gotta represent given I can get there in an hour. 4.1/5.0.

Inori

Ovrot

Unusual, but really pretty. The practically operatic vocals worked spectacularly (yet traditionally) well during its first, chilled out half, which was more underrated post-rock than anything. The descent into chaos that was its second half – a sort of J-rock-hi-hat-fest/post-rock/shoegaze mélange – was interesting (admittedly I think the YT rip wasn’t magnificent on those poor hi-hats but it was the best I could do), but largely worked. 4.0/5.0.

The Gathering Wilderness

Coffin Ships

hansoloshotfirst

I teared up hearing this for the first time – the subject matter (concerning Irish emigration due to famine) alongside the vocal performance was just a little bit too much for my ickle heart is seems. Undoubtedly Celtic, but not so in-your-face as Arsaidh, this was much doomier and less blackened than I thought it would be - on reflection that was probably for the better. 4.5/5.0.

Stallions

sniff

Fun fact: I legit had this open in my tabs when you rec’d it to me, which was rather good timing. You just GET my screamo tastes my dude. The d-beat was unexpected but cool (if sparing), but most of this was just sweet post-rock-laced lush skramz with excellent vocals. Will have to get on the rest of this. 4.2/5.0.

Rotten to the Core

jacquibim

Straight-up, pissed as hell, anti-‘punk rock’ punk rock. This is punk doing as punk does, but doing punk particularly well. Good shit. 4.0/5.0.

chortles

Saw a YT comment saying that this was like Refused if Refused didn’t suck – now, I like Refused, but it made me laugh seeing where they were coming from. This RAGGED – late 80’s/early 90’s phxc certainly seems to place to be. And that bass. Ooh boi. 4.1/5.0.
