12.01.17 | Well that was fun. Too bad we didn't have to fight to the death ;) |
e210013
12.01.17 | Yeah, but we didnt want anyone to die, did we?,ah,ah,ah. |
manosg
12.01.17 | Congrats, bnelso and props to Friday for the tourney!
Hope I will be able to participate on the next tourney. |
e210013
12.01.17 | Yeah, congratulation to both. Since this was the first time I participate on this tournament, I was very impressed and pleased with it. I also hope to participate on the next, too. Cheers, Friday. |
Friday13th
12.01.17 | Thanks, manosg. I'm guessing you blessed this list with the feature. I'll let you guys know about next year! Might do it in the summer instead. |
TwigTW
12.01.17 | Congratulations! No shame in losing to an album as good as Mathematical Mother. |
MrSirLordGentleman
12.01.17 | great winner, excellent album
it was my sixth favorite on the contest but still a great pick, which only proves how many great albums were in competition haha |
TwigTW
12.01.17 | so many great albums this time around! |
bnelso55
12.01.17 | Hey, alright! Wow. What a tourney! I for one am glad it didn't boil down to a fight to death. Thanks to Friday for all your efforts to make this happen and thank you everyone for introducing me to so much great music! |
bnelso55
12.01.17 | I enjoyed all entries to a degree, but 2-4, 6-9, 12 and 16 are definite keepers for me. |
SCREAM!
12.01.17 | A fight to the death would've been so entertaining though!
Congrats bnelso! Nice recs all around in this one (except Todd maybe ;) ) |
Jethro42
12.01.17 | From the very first notes I've heard out of UTO, I thought it would be the winner, so I won that anticipation haha. Bravo bnelso, it's well deserved.
My faves are (I don't count mine that I have high in my esteem);
UTO
Quarteto
Fiori-Séguin
Garolou
801
Song ''Stand By'' (Heldon) is probably my best discovery of all the tourney.
I enjoyed to listen to all the entries, thank you all for all that music.
|
Beardog
12.01.17 | Okay Universal Totem Orchestra sounds pretty cool, gonna check it out for sure! |
e210013
12.01.17 | Congratulations bnelso. You was a fair winner.
Thanks for all of you guys. I only knew before very well Quarteto and 801. So, it was really gratifying knowing so many albums, some of them really great.
My great discoveries of the tournament are, in the first place UTO and Island, my favourites. But, Ingranaggi Della Valle, Mother Turtle, Heldon, Garolou and La Rossa, are all great discoveries too.
|
Jethro42
12.01.17 | I felt uncomfortable listening to Island for a big part of the tourney, because it froze my blood. I found it too hostile and cold, but my ears finally got used to it. Since you named it as a reference, e21, I imagined Van Der Graaf Generator's music to help me going through Island and it worked. Now I can see the beauty of it, so I count it as an honorable mention.
Even Slapp Happy have grown on me, but I don't know if I'll revisit it. Mother Turtle also have magical moments. I think I prefer their debut album. It rocks hard. |
Sabrutin
12.01.17 | I'm glad I discovered Island, I'll keep revisiting the album. Garolou is another one that I really enjoyed, it's gotten cold out there and its music kept company well. It was cool to see The Flock too, I needed to revisit that album. A song in particular that I still remember from the tournament (outside of the stuff already mentioned) is Todd's "Useless Begging", I find it pleasantly haunting |
bgillesp
12.01.17 | Here's my final ranking:
Quarteto 4.5
Slapp 4.3
Flash=Todd 4.1
Island=JW=801 4.0
UTO 3.9
IDV=Monarch 3.8
Fiori 3.7
La Rossa=The Flock=Garolou 3.5
Heldon 3.2
Mother Turtle 2.9

12.01.17 | Already can't wait for next year |
TheIntruder
12.01.17 | Congrats bnelso and Friday. As an outsider I loved participate. The two finalists were worthy each other. Maybe next year I do the same or as a contestant. Who knows? |
e210013
12.01.17 | @ Jethro
I can see what you mean about Island. Even Van Der Graaf Generator in their most strange and insane moments could be so strange and insane like some parts of "Pictures". I agree. But the album is absolutelly great. A real hidden masterpiece, in my prog canons. And you can bet that I heard already many and strange and insane things all over my life, as you, I'm sure.
But, as we are talking about "Pictures", I'm going to give a novelty about it. My next review, and finally I'm going back to my reviews, will be about "Pictures". I was so impressed with the album that I decided to review it when I listened to it for the first time. So, I have the review ready about one month and I intend to published it in the next week or in the other next week. It depends of my free time.
It will be a great tribute to one of the best albums of this tournament. So, I invite you all to read my review. I'm sure that especially Twig, the man who brought it to our knowledge and Sabrutin, the man who most sustained it, will be pleased with the idea. |
Dewinged
12.01.17 | I missed the whole thing but thanks for listing all of these. Gonna go through all of them bit by bit. Hope I can make it to the next one. |
Friday13th
12.01.17 | @Dewinged Glad you can enjoy it. If you really want to go deep, I've done 4 other tourneys like this (the first "Elite Prog" one goes further back than my lists, but you'll find it if you search bands like Maneige or Univers Zero). |
MrSirLordGentleman
12.01.17 | @Dewinged First tourney's winner has being the best album to ever participate. Fact |
Dewinged
12.01.17 | Interesting ;] I will start with this list and probably go deeper at some point, tx friday |
Jethro42
12.02.17 | @e21, yes, it happened to me a few times in prog music to go through moments that gave me goosebumps in a negative way, but never like Island did. Van Der Graaf Generator have their dark nature, but they are rarely cold and unapproachable. There are always warmth injected in their songs, thanks to the organ/piano interplays with saxophone, flute and vocal melodies. Good examples of dark and tortured VDGG songs; ''Plague'', ''Lost'', ''Arrow'', ''Lemmings'', ''The Emperor'' and above all, the ending of ''White Hammer'' all inspires despair, but songs all have something uplifting into them. A melody, a warm riff, an enthusiastic emotion... etc.
I cannot see or feel it in Pictures. That being said, I'm looking forward to your Pictures's review, bro. |
TwigTW
12.02.17 | 801 has been a favorite since high school, so it was interesting to ignore the nostalgia and try to judge it objectively (ha ha, not sure how well I succeeded at that). My favorite new discoveries were UTO, Heldon, Slapp Happy/Henry Cow. My Biggest surprise was the Rundgren. I haven't listened to that album in a million years, because I didn't really like it, but re-listening now I find I like it very much. That's a great surprise!
All-in-all another great tourney. So much great new music. Thanks for organizing everything Friday. You make it look easy, but I know it's a lot of work!
@e21: looking forward to reading that review! |
e210013
12.02.17 | In time my friends, in time. |
TheSpaceMan
12.02.17 | Nice
But I think we all know 13 is the real winner. we werent ready for it |
MrSirLordGentleman
12.02.17 | Formal Female is definitely a keeper, yeah |
bgillesp
12.03.17 | Formal Female was better than UTO imo |
MrSirLordGentleman
12.03.17 | For me it is:
1. 801
2. Quarteto
3. Formal Female
4. Heldon
5. Monarch
6. UTO |
Divaman
12.03.17 | I also enjoyed this tournament a great deal. Besides Flash's debut, which is an album I've loved for years, my Top 3 were UTO, Quarteto and Garolou. But I enjoyed a lot of what I heard, and I've got a few of the others on my Christmas Wish List. |
CusmanX1
12.03.17 | I was thinking of doing something similar, but with jazz or classical music |
Friday13th
12.03.17 | I'd be down for jazz. I guess classical might work, but then the issue is what performance we're supposed to judge. It would have to be narrowly defined to one performance on youtube to be comparable. |
MrSirLordGentleman
12.03.17 | I'd partcipate in that one
I've got like only one jazz underground record I'd rec tho since I'm not into jazz |
MrSirLordGentleman
12.03.17 | Yeah, classical music would be difficult to rate
Even the rating system sputnik uses doesn't work that well with classical music |
bgillesp
12.03.17 | Jazz! |
bgillesp
12.03.17 | I got one that I know of to rec and would love to see what y'all have too |
Divaman
12.03.17 | I'll pass on jazz and/or classical tournament, but I'd definitely like to be included in the next prog rock one. |
Jethro42
12.03.17 | A jazz tourney would be cool, but I'd like to participate to another prog rock one still more. I would already know which album to choose for the latter. |
butcherboy
12.03.17 | I'm in for the jazz one! |
Papa Universe
12.03.17 | gimme jazz-pizzazz |
e210013
12.11.17 | As I promised, my companions of the last prog tourney of Friday, it's now time to publish my review of "Pictures". When I wrote this review, it was when I listened to the album in the Discovery M5. Then, I was a long way from thinking that it would be one of the finalists. So, this is really a great coincidence because it never was my intention to made a review of a finalist album. But, what better to celebrte this great Friday's tourney than with a review of an album in the second place?
So, I wait for your comments about it. I hope that it can be appreciated by the fans of the album, especailly the hard fans. And I also hope that it can be better undestanded and appreciated by all the others.
Cheeres my friends, enjoy it. |

05.05.19 | I just graduated from law school and finally have a bit of time on my hands.
You guys know what that means: PROOOOOOOGGGGG!!! |
MrSirLordGentleman
05.05.19 | Congrats fellow colleague haha. I wish law school over here had a shorter duration lol!
I'll have to check for a candidate. Looking forward for a new tournament!

looking forward to it nonetheless |
Friday13th
05.05.19 | @Gentleman well good luck! lol common law can be pretty whack. Damn legislating judges.
@Jethro yup got a job lined up after I take the bar exam |
Friday13th
05.05.19 | I think I'll start the prelimary on Wednesday to begin round 1 on Friday. |
SharkTooth
05.05.19 | you think we could ever see another psych contest?
or has the drop in participation for the first one killed that idea off permanently? |
Jethro42
05.05.19 | Well, best of luck to you both, mates! |
Jethro42
05.05.19 | @Sharktooth, yeah bro, for the last tourney, we had hard times to bring together 16 candidates for prog. Imagine for psychedelic! |
Friday13th
05.05.19 | @SharkTooth it's kinda hard to shift genres now that it's been prog for so long. If everyone is gung ho about it I would definitely consider it. |
Jethro42
05.05.19 | I found one, but it lasts 62 minutes...That's too much. |
bgillesp
05.05.19 | Excited!! Also huge congrats on the accomplishment! |

05.06.19 | @Jethro my pick is probably gonna be about an hour
@bgillesp Thanks a bunch! |

05.06.19 | I'm ready Friday. Let me know where and when to submit my entry, and I'll be there with bells on. |
TwigTW
05.06.19 | Congratulations Friday, that's brilliant! |
e210013
05.06.19 | First of all, congrats on your graduation, man. Second, I'm very glad to know that the tradition is to continue, which means, that we are going to have another prog tourney organised by you. Third, I'm a bit worried with it due to the date of its begining. Unfortunatelly, I'm going to start a trip for six days abroad. The departure is precisely in the next Wednesday and the return is only in monday 13. So, it's absuletely quite impossible for me to be present at the beginning of it. However, it doesn't pass through my head that I can't participate in it. So, maybe I can participate as an outsider guest, as happened with Intruder, rather than participateingas a true contestant. It will be a different and interestinmg chalenge, too, I'm sure of it. Tell me something, my friend. |
Friday13th
05.06.19 | thanks guys! Check sputnik on Wednesday.
@e21 see my response on the other prog tourney thread |
Divaman
05.06.19 | Shows you where my head is at. I'm so excited about a new prog tourney that I forgot to say CONGRATULATIONS Friday! |
