bgillesp
12.12.17 | I'm pretty confident in my estimates of last years stuff but this will be cool to actually keep track. My goal is to have Jazz above 10% next year |
DoofusWainwright
12.12.17 | Melodeath is a Sput genre? Yikes
If that gets one then I’m thinking the dreaded ‘chamber pot’ and vaporwave should get their own genre tags |
Demon of the Fall
12.12.17 | It should be a separate genre Doof. You've got people that love one & are indifferent to the other, that's reason enough as it proves they're distinctive. |
Papa Universe
12.12.17 | Then where is my Screamo tag? Where is my New Wave? Where is Pornogrind? |
DoofusWainwright
12.12.17 | People who like melodic death metal but don’t like death metal? I’m thinking surely a few bands have been tagged both plain ol’ death and melodeath? I think that level of detail in genre distinctions means there should be an extra 12 or so electronic genres and about 6 more ‘guitar music’ ones |
DoofusWainwright
12.12.17 | I mean, after the onslaught of 2017 (further reading: Pitchfork EOY lists), surely ‘trap’ should be separated from hip hop? |
DinosaurJones
12.12.17 | Yeah, give me those sweet, sweet Liquid Dubstep, Vaporwave, Nu-Disco, Glitch-Hop, and Future Bass electronic tags |
Papa Universe
12.12.17 | I dunno, the difference between DM and MDM always seemed to me as similar to the difference between BM and atmospheric BM. In that, it's just a way of implementing your music, whether you like it more brutal or more slick and pretty. Doesn't need to be defined as a separate genre. |
bgillesp
12.12.17 | There should be a lot more. Especially in Jazz, Electronic, and Hip-hop |
bgillesp
12.12.17 | Melodeath is distinctive enough for me but just barely. There are plenty of electronic, etc. subgenres that deserve distinction here more |
Demon of the Fall
12.12.17 | I'm all for adding extra genres, not taking them away.
There's some crossover between them but you'll actually find the majority of artist pages only have one of melo-DM/DM, not both (& for good reason). |
bgillesp
12.12.17 | The tagging here with melodeath is pretty poor though. If they are distinct, people should stop tagging melodeath band with Death Metal as well. That was the reason my 2016 DM slice was so big, because I almost exclusively listened to melodeath back then. Prog metal gets thrown around as a tag way too often as well. |
bgillesp
12.12.17 | All those Tiger Lillies ratings blew up your folk @Doof |
Demon of the Fall
12.12.17 | That doesn't allow for artists changing over time though...
Are Carcass Melo-DM or DM. Well, they're actually both (plus more), it completely depends which album you're talking about. |
Demon of the Fall
12.12.17 | And in the case of Carcass DM is the 3rd tag so it doesn't even effect your pie (only the first 2 do). |
bgillesp
12.12.17 | Also true. Album tagging would be more effective but would make the site even slower I'm sure so I'll take that trade off |
bgillesp
12.12.17 | I was thinking more of At the Gates style bands. The use of both when only 1 is necessary is much more common with the lesser known bands than the popular ones |
DoofusWainwright
12.12.17 | bgillesp - yeah, and they’re not really Folk.
Should be ‘chamber pop’, ‘vaudeville’, ‘cabaret’ ‘gothic’ maybe, maybe even some ‘opera’ or ‘soundtrack’
Damn Folk genre label |
Demon of the Fall
12.12.17 | @bgillesp
At the Gates do have two distinctive styles though, early ATG is DM, later is melo-DM. I love their first EP & LP but their 'classic' melo-DM album Slaughter of the Soul isn't for me.
I agree that album tagging probably can't realistically happen, I'm just arguing against the whole 'we only need one tag' viewpoint. |
bgillesp
12.12.17 | @Doof, don't forget there are pure metalheads who get folk on their pie from the "folk metal" they listen to and have never touched a true folk album in the conventional sense |

Trifolium
12.11.18 | Haha, yeah, I was also quite shocked it was this high tbh! But I've done some heavy KOMPAKT digging a few years back and everything released on that label is classified as techno so that should be it. |
Demon of the Fall

Trifolium
12.11.18 | Looks that way haha! Let's blame Opeth for that... |
Demon of the Fall
12.11.18 | I wonder how much Opeth have contributed to mine, surprised it's dropped a little actually. I've noticed how a lot of people have one or two dominant genres whereas mine is spread out fairly evenly. I'm guessing there might be a couple that just missed the cut as well (wish we could see more than 8). |
Firedust
12.11.18 | I think the problem lies in how this website classifies stuff. I think that prog is easily the worst metal subgenre and I barely listen to it bar four or five bands, but it's still at 19% in my pie chart. |
