| Nu-Metal Era Albums that Broke the Mold
In 1996, when I first heard Korn (Sean Olson) and Deftones (Teething) on the Crow: City of Angels soundtrack, I was hooked! These two bands had a jaw-dropping sound, which I had never heard before, and defined the blueprint for Nu-Metal. And for a while there, Nu-Metal was awe inspiring, with several bands incorporating sounds from multiple genres and cultures, pulling in DJs and turntables, and weaving in hip-hop beats and worldly grooves.
As the late 1990's faded into the 2000's; it quickly became apparent that this genre was falling under it's own weight. "Derivative" became a word that was more and more associated with the original and new Nu-Metal bands (as well as other bands that happened to fall within this period of time). By 2004 or so, it seemed that Nu-Metal had run its course.
However, there were a few Nu-Metal Era bands that broke the mold (at least for one album within their portfolio), and incorporated progressive and/or world textures into their sound. Or simply had a sound that defied categorization. This list serves to identify my top 13 albums by such bands. | 13 | | Boy Hits Car Boy Hits Car | 12 | | Pulse Ultra Headspace | 11 | | V Shape Mind Cul-De-Sac | 10 | | Puya Fundamental | 9 | | Onesidezero Is This Room Getting Smaller? | 7 | | Mudvayne The End of All Things to Come | 6 | | Memento Beginnings | 5 | | Atomship The Crash of `47 | 4 | | Soulfly Soulfly | 3 | | Incubus (USA-CA) S.C.I.E.N.C.E. | 2 | | Mudvayne L.D. 50 | 1 | | Deftones White Pony | |

04.25.18 | List desperately needs to get down with the bizkit | cold
04.25.18 | Where in the fuck is Korn, where in the fuck is Life Is Peachy | chinesewhispers
04.25.18 | Not sure if Iād call 5 nu metal
12 is underrated though | JustJoe.
04.25.18 | 5 is so awesome.
Also, agreed. Not quite sure I'd consider it nu-metal. But, I'm not good with genres. | Drifter
04.25.18 | He talks about Korn in the descrip | bgillesp
04.25.18 | Replace 1 with KoRn s/t | bgillesp
04.25.18 | Been meaning to check 12 tho | ZippaThaRippa
04.25.18 | Mudvayne are not (and have never been) Nu-Metal. They are a progressive metal band. | someguest
04.25.18 | Alternative metal maybe. Progressive? I don't see it. | SteakByrnes
04.25.18 | @Sinktrap | 0GuyMan0
04.25.18 | LD50 is progressive metal.
Props for 12 - criminally overlooked.
13, too. don't see many people give them love. Didn't back then either.
Apex theory belongs on this list. Everyone saying Korn and Bizkit should be here probably never gave these bands the time of day, because most of these are far superior. | 0GuyMan0
04.25.18 | I could write a dissertation on this, but most nu-metal isn't even what people are really thinking of when they say nu-metal.
Korn / POD / Limp Bizkit are what people mean when they are thinking of nu-metal in the negative. ZERO of the bands above fit that mold. Alt-metal would have been a far more apt tag for most of these bands of the late 90's and early 00's. | cold
04.25.18 | "Deftones aren't Nu-Metal, and if they were that album is the least of what would be considered so."
Exactly, even Deftones themselves say "Around The Fur" isn't Nu-Metal and that they were pegged with the Nu-Metal label with the release of "Adrenaline" and they made it a point to distance themselves from said label. | cold
04.25.18 | "He talks about Korn in the descrip"
But in the same sentence he talks about Deftones and puts "White Pony" at number 1 which isn't Nu-Metal whatsoever while at least the first 3 Korn albums are totally Nu-Metal. | Drifter

True but people need to get down with the bizkit

Yeah

04.25.18 | @cold What is Nu-Metal then? Not being an ass, genuinely curious. I'd always considered the bands you mentioned Nu-Metal (with the disagreement that pre-White Pony was Nu-Metal). | Middle18
04.25.18 | @0GuyMan0 Apex theory were criminally underrated.
Nu-metal has always been my favourite genre as laughable as that is.....its the music I grew up with so I guess I identify with it. I can see why people hate on it but you like what you like at the end of the day. | cold

Well, all I said was Deftones wasn't Nu-Metal with the exception of "Adrenaline", lol. But first and foremost, Korn were the early pioneers in Nu-Metal, and thinking about it, I would even say all the way to the Issues album, maybeeeee Untouchables. But back to your question, i would say Limp Bizkit, Hed P.E., Spineshank, the first Staind LP, Kittie, Cold, Sevendust, possibly the first Linkin Park album, Taproot, Adema...I could literally go on and on. Early incarnations were more or less influences, like Mr. Bungle, Faith No More, Helmet, Infectious Grooves, later-era Suicidal Tendencies, the list goes on and on. Now, there are some bands that unfairly get lumped into the Nu-Metal genre just because they were a "rock" band at the time. Bands like System Of A Down, later-era Deftones, Orgy, Tool, Slipknot, P.O.D., Sepultura, Alien Ant Farm, Biohazard, etc etc. THEN there are bands who are "Nu-Metal" that are actually just butt rock, and that's bands like Godsmack, Saliva, Papa Roach, Disturbed, Drowning Pool, American Head Charge, and THAT list can go on and on as well to even up to today with bands like Five Finger Death Punch and shit bands like that. I just realized I typed a shitload and this is really only my opinion. Hope I answered your question :] | BeyondCosby
04.25.18 | Lol ok, so our definitions are the same. I was worried my life was a lie :( | cold
04.25.18 | My favorite band was Korn from when I was like 10 years old to when I was about 15 or 16. Props to whoever saw my high school pic on the yearbook thread :] | Drifter
