02.01.19 | I think Ars will like this one.
Mr. Bungle - "Carry Stress in the Jaw" (Album: Disco Volante) [Alt. Metal]
Here's yet another gem I found from a drumming best-of list. I found it weird and mindblowing at first, but came back for the sweet jams. I still can't wrap my around the band's musicianship to this day.

I'll post my ratings for the January songs in that thread when I get the chance, but they don't have to be included in the final averages for that list. |

02.03.19 | "Ejaculation Servant"
Wow, the production on this is terrible. I kind of like the voice though. Oh wow, that squealing is crazy. Maybe I'm just used to weird, but this isn't weird for me at all. I could see myself listening to this entire album maybe... it does drag a bit.
3.7/5
"Sleep (Part II): Carry Stress in the Jaw"
Blitzer, you DO know my username is named after a Mr. Bungle song, right? I love this song a lot. The crazy sax, the random squealing, the secret song. I don't even need to relisten to this rate, but it I will anyway because it's so damn good. The best part about the secret song was that the anger was actually kind of legitimate. It was initially planned as a secret instrumental, but they didn't tell one of the members about it, so he got mad and recorded the old man vocals over it to get back at them, but when they heard it, they loved it lol. Classic stuff.

02.04.19 | I ended up flaking off towards the end of January, so time to get back on. Feb is a shorter month, anyway...
"Hey King"
I dig the textures and abrasiveness here a lot, but found it lacked momentum until that surprise vocal entry (of which I was a big fan). Everything came together nicely at this point but the track as a whole felt a little out of balance. Enjoyed it for sure overall.

Not really my jam tbh, lacked structure, wasn't particularly interesting atmospherically and didn't develop all that much

"Carry Stress in the Jaw"
Ah, classic Bungle! Never got into this one as much as it deserved when I went through my DV phase, but there are a lot of great ideas here and that secret track is hysterical. Really enjoyed revisiting it for the first time in a while.

JohnnyoftheWell
02.04.19 | Was tempted to reach for Patton/Driver/Zorn/Spruance-core for my rec, but that's already quite well represented on this list + site, so it was a toss up between kooky/kawaii and hyperdrive. Kooky/kawaii won out, so:
Seiko Oomori - Over the Party
https://open.spotify.com/track/1G3m2opQGz66B9GVwa92qH
Album: Zettai Shoujo
Genre: Folk pop/noise
This is basically a straightforward unplugged pop song with a fantastic amount of bitterness, unnecessary noise and self-sabotage. I reviewed the album, which is in a similar vein, so check that out if you enjoy/are intrigued. Also, the lyrics are hilariously disaffected so check em out too (https://www.jpopasia.com/oomoriseiko/lyrics/324613/tokarev/over-the-party/) |

02.04.19 | Hehe, took a while to make my mind up for this round - if February's gonna be a weird month, I'm not slacking off! |
ArsMoriendi
02.04.19 | "Rocky Mountain Raga"
Wow, this really is pleasant. My ears really need to adjust to though, since it sounds so foreign in structure. Wikipedia says this guy made American primitive music... hmm that's awesome and makes sense for this song. This is super weird without having to be loud, obnoxious, or use any unusual instruments. I can appreciate the simplicity of it all. Oh my, there's vocals! Wow, that's so bluegrassy vocally. Cool. I bet you could easily torture someone with this and I mean that as a weird compliment. Whoa, is got faster, what a show-off! Yeah, this rules hard.
4.4/5 |
Minushuman24
02.04.19 | 1: Hey King - U.S. Maple - 2.7 There's aspects to this I like, but it just did not grasp me. I kinda dug the vocals at the end. I guess I just wish it was much longer.
2: Ejaculations Servants - Twin Stumps - 2.9 Thank christ I am not wearing headphones. I'm playing this off my TV while I do anthropology homework, and I can't say that it's the best study music. Keeping that in mind, I kind of like it in a way? Like, this sounds like shit, but I like the rawness of it; if this was slightly less noisy I probably would listen to it more--oh and shorter, this does not need to be 4 minutes long.
3: Carry Stress in the Jaw - Mr. Bungle - 4.4 I have always put off listening to this band. Fuck so far I love this, only a minute in. Holy shit it's going nuts now, this riff is fucking sick. THOSE VOCALS ARE FUCKING SICK. As an adult I've had such a hard time getting into metal music, but this hits all the right spots for me, if I had to choose one thing I didn't like I guess it would be the old man voice in the latter half. This is long and weird and all too pleasant and exactly the reason I do this every month.
4: Rocky Mountain Raga - Robbie Basho - 4.5 This, this feels like a spiritual experience. I really did not think anything would top the last song for the month, but this is absolutely stunning. This is something I need to listen to when I need to remember that life is beautiful. |

Visions of the Country - very much enjoyed this, was pretty stressed out before listening to it and it felt like a real relief. Beautiful performance and production 4.1/5
Dot-to-Dot - fun track, but didn't really develop past the first chorus. Pretty infectious bass though plus neat sax, which pretty much carried it. 3.6/5
It Ain't All Flowers - psych and country are nowhere near the top of my genre preference and my hopes for this weren't exactly high, but the way the styles phased in and out of each other was pretty engaging and worked pretty well. Good stuff. 3.8/5 |

German progressive metal
This song kicks off The Hirsch Effekt's latest album, Eskapist, with the most dramatic screaming imaginable. It Ain't All Flowers - That accent. It's a bit racist, but I'm not a fan. Maybe it's because I'm being forced to watch ST:Enterprise and I hate stupid Trip and his stupid southern twang. She sure can't wait to get the words out haha. Is she rapping? The music is pretty neat though I don't like her voice.
3.2/5
"The Chaos Path"
Off the bat, this is super metal hmmm. The vocals are entertaining, but the production is blech and the carnival music seems just like a bland take on Bungle worship. Those drums are annoying blast beats too mainly. Violins did catch my ears a bit. I'm mixed on this song, but I mostly don't like it.
2.4/5
"SAINT PETE"
I'M GOING TO REVIEW THIS IN ALL CAPS BECAUSE THE SONG TITLE AND ARTIST ARE IN ALL CAPS. THIS IS LIKE A A SOUND COLLAGE WITH GUNSHOTS AND VOICE EFFECTS. ACTUALLY NOT THAT BAD COMPARED TO SACH'S TYPICAL RECS. THE RAPPING PART STILL SOUNDS TIRED AND LAZY THOUGH. THE ECHO EFFECTS KINDA MAKE THIS FEEL PSYCHEDELIC. THIS IS ALMOST GOOD ACTUALLY, ALMOST.
2.9/5
"The Blood Maiden"
Am I on a tropical island resort? This is boring as hell. I was expecting weird, but instead, I feel like I'm reading a brochure in an office like I'm at a timeshare scam. Sure the voice is kinda weird, but otherwise this is just ugh.

02.12.19 | 6: It Ain't All Flowers - Sturgill Simpson - 3.8 Fuck Yeah, this is badass. It's like country with a tab of acid, I dig it a lot.
8: Over the Party - Seiko Oomori - 3.4 I really liked the way this one morphed. It helps that this is pretty catchy.
9: The Chaos Path - Arcturus - 3.1 oh shit is this symphonic metal, ugh. It reminds me of the Yu-Gi-Oh Duelist Roses PS2 game. That game absolutely ruled, and the soundtrack was too good. It doesn't sound like it anymore, I wish it did, it's circus metal now. From time to time I think circus music can work really well, this is straddling that edge. It transforms into a really nice melody. Now it's just middle east sounding metal, like Orphaned Land.... I think. This is growing on me, I like it sure yeah. Could be shorter though.
10: New Phone - Young_Egypt - 2.3 Uh, alright. Smoking Fools is a bad.
11: The Blood Maiden - Big Dumb Face - 2.1 Hmm. I was okay with it, then it kinda dragged, and I really disliked the vocals, there was something grating about. them. Sorry my man

02.12.19 | 12: I don't know that this fits too well with the category other than the fact it's Australian and so many of us are American. Guitars are straight garage rock and I don't necessarily like that, but the vocals and chorus are pretty nice. I give it a 3. |
TheSupernatural
02.12.19 | 11: Haha wtf is this. Don't even know what to rate it, I can't decide if this is awful or amazing. Put me down for a 4 |

Album: The Heart Goes to Heaven, the Head Goes to Hell

02.13.19 | "The Electrocutioner"
Very minimalist. I can appreciate the aesthetic of this track, but I wish it was more... active? Less minimalist? Whoa what happened, did the tape get ripped apart? lol Did the song change? Weird hmmm. Okay, this is kinda of cool actually.
3.8/5 |

02.14.19 | Think you deleted my Feb 8th rec by mistake Ars lol
The Chaos Path - Was excited for this, given I remembered enjoying some stuff from The Sham Mirrors. On that basis, it was a bit of a letdown - definitely well executed, but the endless chromatic/circus-esque melodies + chords and the vocal style didn't quite do it for me. Enjoyed nonetheless. 3.4/5 |
neekafat
02.14.19 | all these votes and recs makin me warm inside |

02.14.19 | Fixed Johnny, also it was still there in the edit section, Sputnik is just glitchy I guess |
JohnnyoftheWell
02.14.19 | Haha thought it was probs that, bizarre stuff
Egarran, I'm revisiting the Sham Mirrors off the back of your rec and digging it way more than I'd expected. I foresee a binge in the short/mid-future |
Egarran
02.14.19 | Although clearly awesome, I never warmed up completely to that album. It seems more futuristic and I prefer the victorian vibes on Masquerade.
But then again I also like Sideshow Symphonies more and that's neither here nor there. |
Trifolium
02.14.19 | Sham Mirrors is best Arcturus for me, been spinning it like crazy again for the first time in years and it holds up very well. Garm is predictibly amazing on it. |
Egarran
02.14.19 | Do What I Want - Yeah nah mate. And what the hell was that solo towards the end? 2
The Electrocutioner - Definitely decently weird. 3.5
White Rice, Brown Heart - Oh yeah, this too. There's something liberating about people getting together and making these things reality. 3.8 |
JohnnyoftheWell
02.14.19 | Yeah, Garm on Sham Mirrors is absolutely fantastic
Ars pretty sure my rec has now entirely vanished and the others have backdated? |
Minushuman24
02.14.19 | Happy 2000th comment!
12: The Electocutioner - The Residents -3.4 I was worried I was going to hate this one, but barring the noise in the middle this was pretty cool, I like it.
13: White Rice, Brown Hat - Man Man - 3.1 this is definitely unique; I don't exactly know how to feel about it, but there is some great melody in it.
14: Old Queen Cole - Ween - 3.7 Loud, Obnoxious, Awesome. |
ArsMoriendi
02.14.19 | God dammit Johnny, it's because your artist isn't in the database.

02.14.19 | "White Rice Brown Heart"
This band doesn't really thrill me much, but I kinda sorta enjoy this one if not just for the percussion.
3.6/5
"Old Queen Cole"
Someone who isn't me rec'd Ween? I love you. I also love this song. It's a noisy mess of fun. BUT YOU NOW NICKY LIFE IS GETTING TRICKY AND YOU'RE RUNNING OUT OF GAS RUNNING WAY TOO FAST!

TheSupernatural
02.16.19 | 15 - You Fucked Up
This sounds more like a parody than a real song, and not really in a good way. 2/5 |
TheSupernatural
02.16.19 | Wait I just realized I listened to the wrong song because the link sends to a playlist and not the actual song.
15 - Old Queen Cole:
Yeah this is actually pretty neat, much more down my alley. 4/5 |
ArsMoriendi
02.16.19 | You Fucked Up is amazing, but fair enough... |
hansoloshotfirst
02.16.19 | öh, the link for 16 is wrong...it leads to The Doors - Been Down So Long

02.18.19 | I'll update this tomorrow... |
TheSupernatural
02.18.19 | 16: Zzzonked
I don't hate the concept of the song, but the execution isn't my favorite. The main electronic riff leaves a lot to be desired and the only real instrument I can hear is the drums, which I'm not feeling. Vocals are solid for the most part. 2.5/5
17: Hunger Strike
Well I'm not going to go through all 19:30 of this but I'll skim through most of it. It's a crazy and wild jazz epic and I think I might revisit it at some point when I'm feeling like a 20-minute song. From what I heard, 4.5/5 |
Minushuman24
02.18.19 | 16: Zzzonked - Enter Shikari - 2.6 His voice reminds me of keith buckley, which is a good thing. It's a little weird for sure. Don't see myself revisiting this.
17: Hunger Strike - Entranadasphere - 4.1 oh jesus christ this is 20 minutes long. It's pretty fun so far. OH now it slays, this almost reminds me of that Mr. Bungle song earlier this month. Not sure about death metal, but this actually ruled
18: Lifnej - The Hirsch Effekt - 3.7 Oh this one is fun, I wouldn't call this cheesy metalcore even, this is good shit. Man, If anything the prog metal portion is cheesy. This is still really good stuff though |
Papa Universe
02.18.19 | Ween - Old Queen Cole: thank you, sotd threads, for making me realise what I've never realised before, that I utterly dislike Ween. 2
Enter Shikari - Zzzonked: what in the world? 2
Estradasphere - Hunger Strike: ooh, a trip indeed. 4
The Hirsch Effekt - LIFNEJ: I just cannot get into this kind of music. there's no structure, no song-writing or any distinct substance. 2
Tamino - Tummy: a pleasant enough little minimalistic pop tune. likeable. 3.5 |
ArsMoriendi
02.20.19 | "Zzzonked"
Heavy so far... lots of drum abuse. Is this Slipknot? It reminds me of "Before I Forget" honestly. Some electronic beeps in there, hmmm. Man, this is annoying in the worst way. I guess its well played though. +.1 for being played well?
2/5
"Hunger Strike"
19 minutes? You do realize, we're trying to get a bunch of people to listen to these songs, right? Well, here I go... it's an Eastern European dance so far. Now it's just isolated soloing violin... okay. I might let this just settle to the back of my mind because this is too long. This is mostly a jam... 9 mins in. Now it's just a jazz song. This honestly is fine, it's too long, but it's not that experimental. Maybe this would be more enjoyable in a jazz club? Good enough...
3.1/5 |
ArsMoriendi
02.20.19 | "LIFNEJ"
So, this goes from annoying metalcore too annoying prog metal. I hate this. The atmospheric moments are okay though.
1.7/5
"Tummy"
Very mellow. Kinda generic though. Hard to find something to say about this.
2.8/5
"Pig"
Very alt. rock. The feedback is cool. This kinda reminds me of post-punk revival or maybe even garage rock stuff. Raw, but somehow with effects. I hope future ones get back to the theme.

02.21.19 | 1. US Maple, 3.5, i was hoping this would keep on going, felt like it was building up to something big.
Ants sending faxes whilst elephants slow tap their feet.
2. Twin Stumps, 2.3, not a fan of the vocals.
A goat stuck between 2 humpbacks having sex.
3. Mr. Bungle, 3.5, takes me back to my uni days listened to the shit out of Bungle and Fantomas.
Spider monkeys invading the penguin enclosure.
4. Robbie Basho, 3.1, this guy can play, sounds like a fusion of middle eastern, Japanese and native american.
Pubic lice having a romantic dinner on your flaking scrotal epidermis.
5. Melt Yourself Down, 1.3, not a fan, repetitive and boring.
Dude should just piss out his kidney stone already!
6. Sturgill Simpson, 2.7, cannot do that country vocal twang, otherwise a solid song.
An elk tattooing a teardrop on his own cheek.
7. Death Grips, 1.8, That almost blew my speakers, there are def better Death Grips tracks.
A couple of pigeons living inside the Vatican, and shitting on the pulpit.
8. Oomori Seiko, 2.1, sounds like she is auditioning for a Japanese musical on Bjork's life.
9. Arcturus, 2.3, Has potential, but either the production is lacking or the cohesion is not there.
An anaconda special olympics orgy.
10. Young Egypt, 1.1 worst intro to a song, painful slowing down sample of "Natural Born Killaz", distorted raps, aaaargh.
11. Bid Dumb Face, xxxxx my rec, sorry guys |

02.21.19 | 12. The Chats. 2.9, Raw Aussie juvenile punk. Don't know if it is a "WTF" song.
Bunch of teenage kookaburras steel their dad's ute, drink VB by the river.
13. The Residents. 1.9. Someone got electrocuted.
Flamingoes realize that playing "hide the sausage" with maggot infested meat is not a good idea.
14. Man Man. 2.9. What the fuck indeed, need to listen to more Man Man, Men.
15. Ween. 3.5, there are a lot of bands trying to reproduce this type of sound at the moment, FIDLAR comes to mind. This was put out in 1990.
16. Enter Shikari. 3.9, there are better Enter Shikari songs, but i still like this one. I listened to a lot of these guys and Does it Offend You, Yeah in the late 00s.
17. Estradasphere, 3.8. Was not expecting hell to open around the 7 minute mark, then i ended up in Havana. This could grow on me.
18. The Hirsch Effekt. 4.1, No idea on the lyrics, but i like. The metalcore part is fast, could do a whole album like this, around the 4 minute mark, the chorus slowed down vocals is cheesy, but then after a sick bass transition, we are rolling again. Just need to loose that chorus, ruined a great song.
19. Tamino, 3.0, a good song, but only the video clip and some lyrics are kinda "WTF" worthy.
20. Sparklehorse, 3.4, great band and decent song, just not really getting into the distorted vocals. |

02.24.19 | "Dark Allies"
Fabulous pop? This is just synth pop. Really bland synth pop. Where's the non-predictability? No personality either.
So 2.5/5, that 2.4 and 2.6 both seem rediculous. |
ArsMoriendi
02.24.19 | "I Don't Want To Be Happy"
You do know I have this album 5'd? Not my fave from this album, but damn does it still rule. That bass is great, the sax is nuts and those keys are so fun. His voice is also just post-punky goodness.
4.2/5
"Outskirts"
So this opening sounds like samples and musique concrete. The percussion is decent enough. I'm surprised I don't hate this, but I don't particularly love it either.
3.2/5 |
Minushuman24
02.25.19 | 21: Here Comes the Fleas - White Noise - 2.9 huh. This is good? It's definitely ahead of its time.
22: Dark Allies - Light Asylum - 3.6 I'm a sucker for this type of music
23: I Don't Want To Be Happy - James Chance - 3 I've been meaning to check James Chance out for a while now. It's certainly weird, I may have to listen to this quite a bit to digest it properly. His voice is great and that bass absolutely rules htough
24: Outskirts - Occvlt x Freddie Dredd - 2.5 I listened to this twice and I struggled to remember what it sounded like. |

02.26.19 | 21, White Noise- 3.0. Sounded like everyone in the house had a different station on the radio or television playing, but it kinda worked, the few other tracks i listened to off this album were OK too.
22. Light Asylum, 2.4 synthy goth pop, OK, but got repetitive, and vocals were not doing it for me.
23. James Chance.... 2.9, vocals are strong, instrumentation arrangements are whacky, it's OK, but couldn't see myself coming back to this.
24. OCCVLT, 2.2 was this written by an 11 year old Canadian Juggalo? "Suck my nuts u fucking cunt" production is pretty nice saving it
25. The Cramps, 3.3, Surfer rock buzzingly distorted to the max.

02.28.19 | "Viva Loa Vegas"
I liked the creepy vibe at the beginning, but those vocals are meh. This is oddly tolerable though for some reason. Maybe because it has a lot of changes and is original seeming? Who am I kidding, this is like Bungle-core + extreme metal and dubstep.
2.8/5
"Thingamajig"
Backups are odd. This song feels so empty. That's kinda one of my problems with a lot of super modern pop... nothing seems to be going on, it's like they pumped it full of air and had nothing to fill up the space. Ugh, the focus is so put on her voice, but she isn't doing anything special with it. She just kinda sounds sad. OH WAIT THERE'S SOME REALLY LOW MIXED CELLO PLAYING SOMETHING BLAND! Wait, it's getting slightly louder, but isn't changing what it's playing. Fuck this.
