04.09.19 | @sevengill still sounds like a sweet set up! I've been curious about the TC Fangs - how do you like it? |
Sevengill
04.09.19 | the Fangs is super tight. it has a three-way mids switch that can get real grimy or make tremolo picking sound smooth and clear at high distortion. I use it live for Dzö-nga and I'm very happy with it. |

04.09.19 | As a fellow Katana 50 owner.. you do know that the Katana 50 has almost every possible pedal you would ever need built into the software right? Also, I'm assuming you've unlocked all of the sneaky amps, yeah? |
Oneironaut
04.09.19 | @DungeonBoy - haha yup! I've toyed with both the Boss Tone Studio and the FxFloorBoard app - the Sneak amps are pretty cool, but I've always wanted to have my own board. All the Boss built-in effects are great, but to physically tweak actual units has been a dream for years. The Katana takes pedals really well too |
Oneironaut
04.09.19 | @garas - sounds pretty funky, what kind of music do you play? those TC boxes are intriguing, seems like a cool line they've brought out. |

04.09.19 | I have a boss ME-80 pedal board... pretty much has every effect needed to recreate a rage against the machine album. Also looks sleek as hell. My only complaint is that the pre-amps and overdrive/distortion pedals are a bit synthetic sounding, but that’s not really what the pedal board is meant to do in the first place |
SitarHero
04.09.19 | If I had a penny for every incompetent guitarist I've seen with $500+ worth of pedals on their board I'd have several dollars. |

04.09.19 | Used to have a nice board full of "boutique" pedals but then I sold it all and got an Axe Fx II and never looked back. |

04.09.19 | If I ever started playing guitar in a semi-serious band, no doubt I'd drop money on an Axe Fx. |
Oneironaut
04.09.19 | @pjorn - set up sounds tight! What does the focus knob do on the blackout blunderbuss? The EQD Dispatch Master v3 sounds like a pretty great ambient verb/delay combo that looks easy to dial in some crazy soundscapes |
SitarHero
04.09.19 | I hear the Axe8's are pretty sweet. |
Oneironaut
04.09.19 | @budgie lol zvex makes cool shit. @bloc I've never even considered an Axe Fx because the price is prohibitive but if I ever get serious in a legit band, I wouldn't mind researching some more. Digital really has come leaps and bounds since the early days of Line 6 |
Tyler.
04.09.19 | line 6 dl4 is the best pedal i own by far. want to get a second one |
Oneironaut
04.10.19 | @Tyler. that's one of my holy grail pedals - I just need to get one after seeing Dave Knudson tap dancing across 2 of them.
@pjorn - that sounds really great - would love to get my hands on one to try out |
Dewinged
04.10.19 | I don't have much knowledge of pedals, but what I am using right now is a Strymon blueSky, a Holy Grail reverb, a DD6 and I just got a BOSS distortion pedal from a friend just to get started, planning to get a big muff or a fuzz to mix it up and see what i can get. I am open to suggestions! |
Oneironaut
04.10.19 | @Dewinged -you're off to a great start with those two reverb pedals! The DD6 is also fantastic. One of the less glamorous pedals, but quintessential in my opinion is a compressor. Check out Keeley's 4 knob, or EQD's the Warden. If you want a cheaper option, there's the Mooer Yellow Comp. I've personally got the Keeley Aria, which has the same features as the Keeley Comp, but also has a drive feature that can act as a boost or an overdrive, and you can switch the effect order on the fly too, which is pretty sweet. |
Dewinged
04.10.19 | Sounds good man. As a long time drummer I am still struggling to build my board without going broke either. A compressor is smth i considered. I also wanna get a chorus and a tremolo but those are very specific for just a song or two. |
Oneironaut
04.10.19 | @dewinged - yea man, Chorus and Tremolo are on my list after I've build a decent board. So many toys, so little cash! |
50iL
04.10.19 | Dude, I fucking love pedals. Bass player myself. My chain goes like this:
Bass -> Boss OC2 -> Boss PS5 -> Iron Ether FMeron -> Fredric Effects BugCrusher -> Iron Ether Xerograph Deluxe ->TC Electronic Nova Repeater -> TC Electronic Forcefield -> Two Notes Le Bass -> EHX 720 Looper -> Fender Rumble 100W
I can go in depth for any pedal, in case you're curious. |
Oneironaut
04.10.19 | @50il - Fuck yes bass pedals - it's a whole other world I know nothing about. What's your desert island pedal in your set up? Your chain looks so sick |
50iL
04.10.19 | @Oneironaut Thank you! Took a lot of saving up and drooling on Reverb haha. My desert island pedal is actually the first pedal I ever got; a compressor. I cannot emphasize enough how crucial a compressor is to sound good, or even professional. It's a very small thing that goes such a long way. I will say, though, the Forcefield is a tad too crunchy for my taste; I need to get a more versatile compressor.
Whenever people ask me what pedal they should buy first, I always say compressor. It's just so useful live, in a studio, and in practice. It's quite possibly the most easily applicable pedal type out there. |
Oneironaut
04.10.19 | @50iL agreed so hard on the compressor - it's the only pedal I've felt was essential, and is my always-on pedal. using a good compressor is like being used to listening in 92kbps and all of a sudden listening to FLAC.
Your EHX 720 has me thinking twice about an upgrade - the features are immense, and the switch on my Ditto is already starting to shit itself |

04.10.19 | Korg Miku is the only pedal any guitarist needs. |
garas
04.10.19 | @Oneironaut I play mostly ambient stuff. (But the Behringer HD300 is pretty good for BM or stuff like that.)
And yeah, those TC Electronic pedals are pretty good: strong case, clean sound. They're my favourites. I might plan to get other reverb or a vibrato pedal from them. |
Oneironaut
04.10.19 | @sixdegrees - a classic and functional. @solrage - also a classic, and perfect for emo/jrock
@garas - yea, TC Electronic makes an interesting case for their new line of affordable stuff. I'm sad because my Ditto looper by them has a switch that's dying, so be wary of the build quality |
garas
04.10.19 | Sad to hear that. Seems like that's something for the looper pedals. I had to send back to factory my Valeton looper because the switch died... |
50iL
04.10.19 | @Oneironaut The 720 is an excellent choice for a looper tbh; it's terribly practical, powerful, and you can get it used for under 100 bucks. There's not much else to ask for.
Oh, that reminds me; always buy used. Music gear is devalued immensely because of a "used" condition. I've saved hundreds, upwards of a thousand, dollars from offering on used items. |
DungeonBoy
04.10.19 | lol Dewinged "I don't have much knowledge of pedals" but you have a blue sky and a holy grail. Those are both really amazing pedals |
Oneironaut
04.10.19 | @50iL great advice, I've paid a lot just buying new pedals. The market is pretty shallow here, so the used offerings are pretty garbage/not what I'm after. How about power supplies - when do I need to upgrade to something like a Walrus Audio Aetos or Voodoo Lab? I'm daisy chaining my set up, and powering my Reverb pedal on an isolated power supply.
Chain is Katana > Tele > Keeley Aria compressor* > Digitech Obscura* > Walrus Audio Fathom > Ditto *
* = daisy chained
|
bloc
04.11.19 | Yep, digital has made leaps and bounds over the past 5 years. Hell, I think even Line 6 is putting out digital shit that sounds amazing and is a fraction of the price of an Axe Fx. There's no need to even consider an Axe Fx if it's a matter of money.
However, nothing beats the aesthetic of a pedal board with the colours, flashing lights, the ability to kneel down and tweak, etc. Even the Axe Fx can't replace that. |
50iL
04.11.19 | @Oneironaut Hmmm... Your daisy chain seems damn functional for now. You should really look to buy a power supply once your daisy chain doesn't reliably feed the mA of every pedal. For simple, silent pedals, it's not a big deal (i.e. pretty much everything you're chaining) but once you mess with multiple distortion/fuzz/noisy and hungry ass pedals (high mA requirements) you should start saving up for one. For now, you should be good (tldr; buy a power supply when you start using pedals with high mA requirements or when your pedals are numerous to the point that you can't feed them all properly with a daisy chain).
I feed my stuff with a Pedal Power 2 Plus by Voodoo Lab, and it's reliable af. Well worth the investment, and it's also not really expensive used. I've heard great things about the Aetos as well. All in all, you should look for a power supply in your price range and that is capable to feed the number of pedals that you wish on your board. |
Oneironaut
04.11.19 | @50iL - thanks man, that's super helpful. I've got one overdrive on the way and arriving next week - the EQD Dunes. Hopefully that won't upset the balance too much haha! |
DungeonBoy
04.11.19 | You'll know when you need to upgrade to an isolated power supply when you start to notice additional noise (hum) coming through your amp. Until then daisy chain away.
If the time comes when you need an isolated power supply, I second picking up a power supply from Voodoo labs. They are expensive, but I've never had an issue with mine, and they are pretty much industry standard. Also there are different sizes you can get, which is nice. I use 4 9v pedals, so the ISO-5 works perfect for me, but is also limiting, so you got some options |
Oneironaut
04.11.19 | @DungeonBoy - thanks for that man. That makes a lot of sense - so if I can get away with daisy chainin' for now, might as well. Definitely have Voodoo labs on my radar now though. |
Josh D.
04.11.19 | After testing a couple dozen from a rental place down the street over a span of a couple months, I ended buying a few to stick with. At the moment my chain is a Ditto -> Dispatch Master -> Afterneath. I became a big EQD fan quickly. |
Oneironaut
04.11.19 | @Josh D - I'm really excited about getting my first EQD. I really like the crazy sounds they make and the aesthetics of all their pedals are siiiick. If I didn't just get my fathom, I would be looking at the Dispatch Master - it looks like an ambient powerhouse and seems pretty simple to dial in sweet tones. |
Josh D.
04.12.19 | It's really good because the reverb and delay stay behind the dry signal pretty well, so you can play without the guitar getting washed. And the delay doesn't self-oscillate, so when dimed there isn't a feedback loop and the delays get more mellow and pad like as it goes.
I rented the Fathom for a couple days, it can get pretty cavernous if you want. But I liked the sounds out of the Afterneath, and feeding delays into makes it sound really cool. |
Josh D.
04.25.19 | I just got the Specular Tempus and it rules, get it now |
onionbubs
04.25.19 | i honestly dont use pedals much anymore since i basically only play through bias fx now but i mostly just used a few boss pedals for the shit. i was the only guitarist in a band at the time i bought em so i had a harmonist and a loop station to try and make up for a 2nd guitarist, and a delay just bc. used to be obsessed with the idea of getting them and building like a massive pedalboard, but a lot of them are kind of a waste of money if you dont actually need to use the effect |
Josh D.
04.25.19 | Yeah I'm trying to not fall into it too much as a one man operation. Making ambient tones, I don't need that much, I just like having options. But the Voodoo Lab power supply I have is full now, so I have to consider that when looking at getting more. Now my chain is:
Ditto -> Wampler Tumnus mini (boost) -> Dispatch Master -> Specular Tempus -> Afterneath |
Oneironaut
04.26.19 | @Josh D. chain sounds good, but that Specular Tempus is pricey! Looks amazing, its a reverb and delay, right? |
Josh D.
04.26.19 | Yeah, although not both at the same time. Other than how great it sounds, they have software where you can run it to your computer via USB, select a delay or reverb and then edit all the parameters (including some not showing on the pedal) and save presets from there. Lots of stuff to do with it. |
