Larkinhill 07.02.19	1 was pretty bad imo (cool death scenes though). 3 was decent but pretty forgettable and not scary. It was definitely at least better than the first but can’t measure up to the damn good second. Seeing 2 tonight myself — hyped! Hereditary was amazing and the trailer looks great. Really looking forward to Scary Stories, was obsessed with the books as a kid and the director is great (Autopsy of Jane Doe was amazing). Took my kids to see Aladdin and it was actually pretty decent — Will Smith was creepy in the scenes he was a blue genie though lol. But half of the scenes he just looked like regular Will Smith.

They do a pretty good job of trying to make them look plausible, and they usually had Chucky threatening a kid, which was a little more believable. But it's just impossible to be scared by them. Because at the end of the day, the dude's a doll. Don't you feel like if he attacked you, you'd just punt him Narnia?

It’s for the most part very restrained, calculated and talky. But the dialogue and story were so good that it didn’t bother me at all.

Like a 6/10. My daughter likes it a lot but she’s 12.
Rowan5215 07.03.19	Us is exactly the kind of overlong, patchy, self-indulgent passion project I want and expect from a second film of a filmmaker who'd hit massively big with a safer, more formulaic first one that's not a knock against Get Out at all but Us is more unique in its vision and execution and has images which stay stuck in my head in a way Get Out never had which is why I prefer it. Us also has a far, far better ending
Larkinhill 07.03.19	Completely loved Midsommar. Absolutely bonkers insane and creepy as hell. Such a sense of dread as you watch in unfold. Like a car crash you can’t look away from. Definitely in line quality wise with Hereditary. Was also very funny at times. But I don’t want to overhype it for anyone. It’s great, but weird and loopy as hell.
butt. 07.03.19	yeah that shit was wackkkkkk! which is exactly what I was expecting. some of those scenes near the end were so uncomfortable, and I was glad he took it as far as he did. I loved it but have no desire to rewatch it anytime soon. What a gorgeous movie though, the trippy effects and the gore....damn. Hereditary is still the better movie to me, and while acting in both was superb, you just can't beat Toni Collette's performance
brainmelter 07.03.19	yeah hereditary is better for sure. Movie was good but it was surprisingly predictable tbh it went everywhere I expected it to. Hereditary threw me for a loop more. a lot of the characters were highly unlikable. The best part was that one scene.. with naked women in the house and Christian. the theatre was laughing so hard because they were so uncomfortable. Best part for me tbh because that shit wasn’t even that funny but people were dying of laughter to hide their uncomfortableness. Gold
brainmelter 07.03.19	also hereditary was a lot more subtle and nuanced. This movie was more ham fisted and presented almost everything at face value. Immediately after I saw hereditary I felt I needed to see it again but that wasn’t the case here. I feel like I don’t need to see it again and not in a bad way but yeah. I think i just had too high of expectations because I saw most of the ‘twists’ coming from the first 20 minutes of the movie. Maybe I’m just desensitized and knew what to look for this time around. All the symbolism and metaphors they wanted to hit you with, they kind of hit you over the head with. You get everything at face value. I sound like I’m bashing it, it was good. Just a kind of a disappointing follow up to hereditary, especially because it hit a lot of similar plot beats and outcomes. Multiple plot holes too. I mean they’re two different movies but they’re also two crazy zealot cult movies were the main characters are powerless to their plans. Cinematography is great of course though

One of those cases where the audience is SUPPOSED to be ahead of the characters. The fun is in the dread leading up to it, scared for the characters fates, watching it all transpire and how the characters react. Just a different a type of movie to Hereditary imo. And what’s with Ari and weird looking blond kids lol.

butt. 07.05.19	i mean yeah, you're not wrong. but when a movie has positive critic AND audience scores...that's a good indication that it's not a bad movie lol. And I find that I agree with critic's consensus like 90% of the time, so it's a good indicator for me.
budgie 07.05.19	i completely ignore popular considerations for horror movies. all the james wan fare seems popular but i hate it all, whereas the blackcoat's daughter & lake mungo are both at like 6.0 or under on imdb. annabelle being positively received means nothing to me at least. & my horror buddy said it was trash already so... figure he's probably right. still going to check it though FWIW he gave midsommar a 5/5 so there's some excitement still for this year :P i loved IT chapter 1 so the next installment is the big thing for me, can't wait for that

Larkinhill 07.05.19	The Autopsy of Jane Doe and The Blackcoat’s Daughter are hands down my fav horror movies of the past 5-10 years (maybe more). Blackcoat is my number one. The atmosphere and dread man. My idea of a perfect horror movie. So creepy. The Witch would round out my trio. There are others up there like this, Hereditary,The Babadook, The Conjuring etc but those two are best. Annabelle Creation, A Quiet Place and Ouija Origin of Evil would make the good/middle tier. Good but not great basically.

Best horror filmmaker around right now. Second Annabelle was solid imo (first sucked) and the first Conjuring was good at the time imo.

Larkinhill 07.05.19	Lol it is man. Such a slow burn and very psychological (which is what I prefer). From what I’ve heard here what you like in a horror movie, you should love it. It’s definitely that kindof movie where a lot of people will just say “this is terrible, nothing’s happening”, but there is so much going on. It’s kust more subtle and they’re too dumb/narrow minded to pick up on it lol. The lead actresses are phenomenal in it. Really liked Suspiria. Especially that ending lol! As WTF as Midsommar, maybe more. Had to buy the blu Ray.
Gyromania 07.05.19	yeah just noticed one of the actresses is the girl who plays sabrina, which is def a guilty pleasure of mine lol. i caved and watched the trailer for midsommar and it's moved to the top of my things to watch. might even go see it before the new toy story. looks a lot like the endless, which was another movie i really enjoyed, except this looks far deeper and more visually stunning

Larkinhill 07.06.19	I’m really looking forward to Scary Stories. Not sure if it’ll be a GREAT movie (looks positioned more like a thrill ride/rollercoaster (a la IT, The Conjuring etc), than an actual great, scary horror movie, but I grew up reading those books man, some of those stories/pictures were nightmares from my childhood. Intense nostalgia. Told my 12 year old daughter I would take her (I bought her all the books when she was 7/8). Andre Overdal, The director, was also the director of The Autopsy of Jane Doe. That movie was so amazing that they gave him the reins for the big, iconic Scary Stories movie. Guillermo Del Toro is producing but that probably means fuck all tbh.

These are the true stars, not The Conjuring and IT (though I enjoyed both). The Autopsy is ALMOST as good but not quite. An amazing and batshit creepy horror movie. Can’t wait to hear your thoughts.
Gyromania 07.06.19	agreed, i definitely got lynch vibes, and i love david lynch (eraserhead is one of my faves). the ratings for this movie are fucking abysmal. honestly i'm not surprised. any horror movie that the audience has to think about and isn't outright explained usually gets shit ratings (like the house that jack built, although i wouldn't call that a horror movie per se).

Gyromania 07.06.19	larkin: have not seen it but will download. you and rowan seem to know what's up when it comes to film, def want more of the stuff we've been discussing. blade runner 2049 was SO good. i know a lot of people didn't seem to like it but it might be my favourite movie that year. granted i actually haven't seen the original. and yeah the subtleties in coherence really reward repeat viewings. when i watched it for a second and third time with my sister and friend afterwards, i remember thinking "man, so much of this is going to go completely unnoticed by them"

Gyromania 07.07.19	yo rowan, i checked out enemy last night. really good movie, lots of subtext to unpack, which i love. at first i wasn't sure what the spider was a symbol of, but it's all pretty clear now. i interpreted it as: he has split personality disorder (i thought this was cleverly hinted at early on when he rounds the corner as she calls him on the phone), and the spider, being a symbol of fear and anxiety, represents his reservations about commitment. that conversation they have towards the end as the car crash is happening was such a brilliant sequence, symbolically killing his other self, or so he thought until the final frame when he sees the giant spider. that half smirk says to me "looks like i can't change after all", but maybe i'm just too cynical lol. it's def open-ended. i think this cements villeneuve as one of my favourite directors. arrival, bladerunner 2049, and prisoners are another 3 of my favourite movies from this decade. also, i thought the colour palette in the movie was another great subtextual detail. i think the whole split personality thing has been done to death, but i don't mind it when it's conveyed this well.

butt. 07.07.19	Damn you guys are going hard over here! Wanted to chime in say Lake Mungo is amazing and coherence is amazing, anyone reading who hasn’t seen those, hop on it ASAP. I also saw Annabelle 3 last night, it was pretty fun but nothing too original (obviously). Acting was surprisingly really solid. 6/10

Rowan5215 07.07.19	good to hear it gyro, I haven't watched Enemy in a very long minute so I'm not sure I can offer a lot on interpretations, but I remember being convinced it was non-linear and you could piece together the actual timeline with clues in the movie. the spider effects stayed with me a looong time after watching that lol

butt. 07.08.19	yeah I've seen blackcoat's daughter, it was good but didn't quite live up to the hype for me. The build was good but payoff wasn't totally there. "Lake Mungo fucks, it has one of the scariest moments I have ever seen in all seriousness" YESSS that's one of the few movie moments that I truly have a hard time watching alone. Not much scares me anymore, but that scene fucks me up
butt. 07.17.19	anybody see The Dead Don't Die? pretty average zombie flick. solid cast but there wasn't a single original thought put into the movie. Not a bad movie, but I'm just not sure why it was made? Zombieland's existence makes this movie completely unnecessary

Speaking of Evil Dead, my god I love the fucking remake. Better than the original in my eyes. Now THAT is kinda disturbing, especially the tree/vine rape scene. Movie just feels kindof evil and I love that.

Larkinhill 08.19.19	Yeah it was entertaining. Fairly formulaic. But a decent watch. Great for fans of the books — the highlights were definitely the characters/ghosts brought to life — Me-Tie-Doughty-Walker was best, but the Pale Lady and Harold were awesome too. Also saw 47 Meters Uncaged. Pretty fucking silly and stupid, but entertaining. I think it was intentionally laughable? I was laughing at least. That said, it was very repetitive. Characters swim in murky waters, shark pops out, they escape and/or someone gets killed, repeat.

butt. 08.20.19	ok yeah I really liked Scary Stories, didn't realize it would be centered around halloween like that. Love the small-town, october setting and atmosphere. Felt like a mix between Trick 'r Treat and Goosebumps. And I loved the Harold segment so much that I went home and immediately watched Scarecrows (1988) which I had been putting off for some time And yes I saw the Lighthouse trailer, very stoked. And the IT 2 trailer just gets me more giddy every time I watched it.

butt. 10.23.19	I've been pretty content with horror this year. Nice mix of quality indie and blockbusters imo. Us, Annabelle 3, IT 2, Midsommar, Zombieland 2, Child's Play, Scary Stories to Tell in the Dark, and The Lighthouse (haven't seen yet). I'd give all those at least a 7/10

Larkinhill 10.28.19	Scary Stories is fun. I mean, I’m not sure why you expect some violent R rated adult horror movie. It is, after all, based on a scary story compilation geared toward kids. I grew up with the books and was obsessed. The illustrations were imperative to making the stories work. The movie isn’t great, but it’s a good and mildly spooky time. Lots of fun. Fans of the books should be happy. Lots of callbacks.
