07.20.19 | And I'm up:
Genre: Really any sort of metal
Part of the discomfort is that I have no idea where to dive in since there are so many subgenres. I'm not as much into heavy or abrasive music, but do love post-hardcore. I'm really into strong/catchy melodies and I know that metal with that exists, I just don't know where to find it. Something more atmospheric would probably be more up my alley. My top three favorite genres are probably folk, indie rock, and pop punk. |
tyman128
07.20.19 | Wolves at the Gate - VXV
Underoath - Disambiguation
Genre: Rap
I don’t know why but I’ve never really gotten all that much into rap so I’ve never really searched. Sure there are a few rappers that I enjoy, but I’ve never quite delved into the old school rap that I’ve missed out on. |
Confessed2005
07.20.19 | GZA - Liquid Swords
Jurassic 5 - Power In Numbers
Genre: Folk
I enjoy a lot of folk-influenced metal bands but aside from Iron & Wine, I've never really gotten into much actual folk music. |

07.20.19 | Every time I type up an answer you suckers respond first, hold the phone :/ |

07.20.19 | Tyman: De La Soul - Stakes is High
Socially conscious hip hop with great jazz(?) influence and slick rapping.
dmathias: Opeth - Still Life
some might say this is complex, but the combo of clean and aggressive sections are a a good demonstration of what is possible in metal, including decidedly non-metal passages |

07.20.19 | Kaiwaz, as a Texan that grew up with country before it got super commercialized, listen to Brooks and Dunn - Neon Moon and see if that awakens some sad ass fucking feelings. It's a nice representation of the lonesome blues underpinning of a lot of country music (which I loathe writ large btw)
I forgot to post something I hate: post-punk |
dmathias52
07.20.19 | @Kaiwaz It sounds like you need some alt-country in your life!
Drive-By Truckers - The Dirty South
Sturgill Simpson - A Sailor’s Guide to Earth
|
ArsMoriendi
07.20.19 | @Confessed2005:
try these 2 for folk:
Van Morrison - Astral Weeks
Nina Nastasia - Run to Ruin
For me, uh: I could never get into Chillwave/hypnagogic pop though it always seemed interesting on paper |

I'm not really a metal head, like you post hardcore is my heavy genre of choice but there is some metal I like. I would recommend Pain of Salvation's album Remedy Lane. Give the song "Chain Sling" a try as a taster. The genre is prog metal but to be honest much on the album barely qualifies as metal. But that can be a nice way to dip your toes in. I recommend it because it has strong, memorable choruses and it has some of the same expressive power as post hardcore. How you enjoy!
As for myself, I'd be interested in some jazz recs. I like rhythmic grooves a lot so I'd be keen to explore recs that capitalise on that side of jazz. |
TheMightyScoop
07.21.19 | genre: pop punk
I just cant stand how un-punk this genre is. I love abrasive punk/hardcore (Converge, Botch, Cave In, Bad Brains, etc) however there is some more melodic stuff I dig as well (Husker Du and Jawbox come to mind).
@nightbringer check Dvne - Asheran. It has a really unique, middle eastern inspired melodic vibe to it with some outstanding performances. Their are also some more extreme metal tendencies throughout this record but they're not too hard on the ears and might even help you appreciate that kind of metal more. |
DopeFiend
07.21.19 | this is a dope idea |
ConcubinaryCode
07.21.19 | @mightyscoop check new dangerous summer. I also have issues getting into pop punk but I thought it was a solid album that might away your opinion. Could be wrong but it's worth a shot.
My out of comfort genre is Electronica. Although I fw stuff like burials "untrue" and think "endtroducing" is brilliant mostly due to the atmospheric feel the albums produce I've had much trouble listening to whole albums past those two |
naughtcturnal
07.21.19 | @Bloon: try Billy Bragg & Wilco's "Mermaid Avenue" (the first one) |
dmathias52
07.21.19 | @Bloon also check out “Southeastern” by Jason Isbell (a fairly straightforward country album, but I think the best singer-songwriter album of the decade) and “Pony” by Orville Peck, which has some post-punk tendencies! |
Uzumaki
07.21.19 | @nightbringer, check out Dave Brubeck - Time Out, Miles Davis - Kind Of Blue, and John Coltrane - Blue Train
@Mightyscoop, check out Destine - Lightspeed and Tonight Alive - What Are You So Scared Of?
For me, I cannot get into death metal. There’s been moments where I’ve liked something that could be termed death metal, but I’ve never wanted to explore further. I do like a nice balance between cleans and uncleans though. |
Ecnalzen
07.21.19 | I am going to go with funk. Chili Peppers are the only thing I can think of that I listen to in the genre.
@Uzumaki, Maybe try Scar Symmetry - Holographic Universe. For being a death metal/melodeath band (this is probs more towards the melodeath side), there are quite a few clean vocals on it. That was one of my first in the genre. |
botb
07.21.19 | @ecnalzen While it’s not entirely simply funk, I think you’d be hard pressed not to enjoy the groove on Herbie Hancock - Headhunters.
I’d say out of everything that I listen to I find country to be my biggest weakness but I do enjoy what gritty outlaw country (as long as it’s not obviously racist) and bluegrass I’ve heard. I just haven’t heard too much. Just please none of that Florida Georgia line pop country shit |
botb
07.21.19 | and hey @Scoop if you haven’t checked Shelter - Attaining the Supreme yet, it flirts with pop punk just enough but is a melodic hardcore record at its core, may be just what you need. I also just got lucky enough to see Avail play all of 4AM Friday which also falls into that category |
Uzumaki
07.21.19 | I’d second Headhunters; love that album. You could also check Maggot Brain by Funkadelic. |
GhandhiLion
07.21.19 | @Botb Try these. Most of them are alt-country
Terry Allen - Lubbock (On Everything)
Cowboy Junkies - The Trinity Session
Sixteen Horsepower - Sackcloth n Ashes
Souled American - fe
Mojave 3 - Excuse for Travellers
Califone - Roomsound
Volebeats - Solitude
I cant find an easycore/happy hardcore album that doesn't bore me or make me want to rip my ears off.

ArsMoriendi
07.21.19 | Never heard of easycore, google says it's commercial 2000s emo influenced pop punk? yuck |
GhandhiLion
07.21.19 | haha yeah. Stuff like A Day to Remember |
naughtcturnal
07.21.19 | @TheMightyScoop: Check out Buzzcocks' "Love Bites" from 1978 |
Ecnalzen
07.22.19 | Yeah, Florida Georgia Line is slightly on the terrible side. One of the few albums I have heard that I think truly deserves a 1.
For the alt/country recs in general, I enjoy these, if anyone is interested in a few more:
The Wild Feathers - S/t and Lonely is a Lifetime
The Departed - Adventus |
naughtcturnal
07.22.19 | Something I hear a lot about and am not accustomed with is acid house. I listen to a bit of electro/darkwave/synthwave/industrial (jamie xx, perturbator, cyberaktif, etc) and listen to a lot of ambient but I want to be given a couple of reasons and good examples to why I should listen to acid house |
