bgillesp's 2010s Albums of the Decade (197-101)
Honestly I'm pretty proud of this list. I feel like I have listened to a good majority of stuff that could make this list for my taste meaning I don't think I have too many glaring gaps in listening. Obviously there will be a good few albums I haven't checked from the decade that could be here, but I put a lot of time into minimizing that number as much as possible. Most of this half of the list will be honorable mentions w/o descriptions because effort. The "real" list starts with my 4.5 and up ratings from the decade. Anything with the same rating is essentially tied or loosely ranked. That being said, the 4.3s on this part of the list are essentially in my top 100 on a different day of the week. Other half of the list will have more involved descriptions. Lemme know what you think and what I'm missing. |

28 | | Kanye West My Beautiful Dark Twisted Fantasy
4.25 (2010) I'm not the biggest Kanye fan, but there is no denying his skill in production, and there is no denying this album deserves a spot on this list. |
27 | | Cloudkicker Beacons
4.25 (2010) Instrumental progressive metal with some early djent tendencies. |
26 | | Iglooghost Steel Mogu
4.25 (2018) Clear Tamei and Steel Mogu. Counting both EPs here as a dual release. Love the fast paced but catchy IDM craziness. |
25 | | mewithoutYou [untitled] e.p.
4.25 (2018) At first I liked this EP better than the full length, I think mostly because I love the acoustic "Winter Solstice" so much better. Eventually the full length overtook this, but I still really love this release too. |
24 | | Insomnium Shadows of the Dying Sun
4.25 (2014) Insomnium is one of my oldest favorite bands and was a big stepping stone for me into DM. This album is big on my nostalgia factor, but I really think it is excellently done as well with "While We Sleep" being a top song of the decade. |
23 | | Deafheaven Ordinary Corrupt Human Love
4.25 (2018) Doing just enough different to avoid becoming stale, they really just made this a more into a dream pop album and for the most part did very well with that. |
22 | | Turnover Peripheral Vision
4.25 (2015) Dreamy emo. |
21 | | Laurel Halo Quarantine
4.25 (2012) Weird ambient electronic w/ awesome album art. Shouts to Fripp! |
20 | | Trophy Scars Darkness, Oh Hell
4.25 (2010) EP that is my favorite release from this post-hardcore band, other EPs and LPs included. |
19 | | Birds in Row We Already Lost The World
4.25 (2018) Birds in Row put out one of the best metalcore/emo/hardcore/posthardcore/whatever-on-this-spectrum albums I've heard in a long while due to the killer basslines. Shouts to Papi! |
18 | | Oxbow Thin Black Duke
4.25 (2017) Really entrancing stuff and killer atmosphere to this thing, but I wish there had been more length. Shouts to butcherboy! |
17 | | Wingnut Dishwashers Burn the Earth, Leave it Behind
4.25 (2010) Weird folk punk that's a lot of fun. |
16 | | Portugal. The Man In The Mountain In The Cloud
4.25 (2011) Floaty indie rock that's all about the chill and fun vibes. |
15 | | Pierce the Veil Misadventures
4.25 (2016) If you're reading this list from lowest ranked to highest, this will probably be the first entry that will get me hate, but get used to it because I have 2 albums from these guys much higher on this list. The back half of this album falls ever so slightly, but I still love this band so much. |
14 | | The National High Violet
4.25 (2010) This was one of the first albums I was ever specifically rec’d on Sput, so thank you to whoever it was and thanks for helping me get into the Sput community. |
13 | | The Bamboos 4
4.25 (2010) While popular opinion may say this is their best album (I think Dewi and I are their only fans on this site though), I think it gets edged out by Night Time People slightly just for the vocals. For me, Kylie Auldist as vocalist is the best part of the band. Their pop funk stylings on this album are their best musical work, but she only sings on a couple tracks here vs all of them on NTP. Either way, I highly recommend anything they've ever done of bluesy-soulful-pop-funk fun. Shouts to Dewi! |
12 | | Son Lux Brighter Wounds
4.25 (2018) This is some of their most subdued work to date, but the compositions are still incredible. Such an underrated artist/group. Shouts to Papi and Potsy! |
11 | | Dead Letter Circus This Is The Warning
4.25 (2010) Progressive hard rock/post-hardcore |
10 | | Kishi Bashi Omoiyari
4.25 (2019) If it weren’t for that weird country-ish track this might would’ve tied with Lighgththgthhg for my favorite of his. |
9 | | Greyhaven Empty Black
4.25 (2018) Sort of like ETID but fresher and cool in its own ways. |
8 | | Pain of Salvation In the Passing Light of Day
4.25 (2017) Seriously great prog metal with a lot of terribly catchy moments, some deeply sincere moments, but also a couple suspiciously insincere moments that keep it from being higher. |
7 | | Devin Townsend Project Transcendence
4.3 (2016) Last minute bump granted this a slot on the ranked portion of the list for me. For a while after Empath dropped, I couldn’t figure out which of these two I preferred, but after much deliberation, this won out. |
6 | | Obscura Akróasis
4.3 (2016) Progressive DM album at a perfect short-ish length for back to back jams. |
5 | | Amia Venera Landscape The Long Procession
4.3 (2010) Post-metal, post-hardcore, post-everything. Good stuff. |
4 | | Boards of Canada Tomorrow's Harvest
4.3 (2013) I don't know much about BoC as this is the only album of theirs I have checked, but seeing as how I like it this much when it is supposed to be their worst, I really should check the others. |
3 | | Moon Tooth Crux
4.3 (2019) Their first record was good, but holy cow this is even better. The prog elements are smoother, see “Motionless in Sky”, the heavier moments are more energetic, and overall it’s just more fun. |
2 | | Ghost (SWE) Meliora
4.3 (2015) Heavy metal that is comically (not) satanic. Lots of great grooves. |
1 | | SikTh Opacities
4.3 (2015) Creepy and wild progressive metal/metalcore. Loved seeing these guys open for Periphery. |
