i fully expect any long term ubi that comes out of the current system to fuck poor people over by replacing the rest of the social security net with one (insufficient) payment |

03.19.20 | Well, they could have used that 1.5 trillion that totally failed to mitigate the crash to give out checks to people, or as ive seen some others saying, pay off all student debt. But nah, another bailout for wall street. Socialism for big money = ok, but not for everyone else. |

03.19.20 | UBI is useless without greater systemic change. universal health care and national rent control would be needed at the very least. otherwise, that 1k a month will just evaporate when used for medical debt and skyrocketing rent |
Sinternet
03.19.20 | UBI as a system is ok but there's a reason benefits are means-tested - some people have greater capacity to pay and some people have greater need. There would need to be a ton of assurances before going into such a system regarding healthcare and benefits that will need to still exist. There's no point giving a certain amount of money each month to people who don't need it. The whole benefit of UBI economically is a greater level of expendable income for people who otherwise contribute very little in transactions outside of necessities - more people buying 'luxury' items needs the ability of people to afford such things. |

03.19.20 | It is going to be essential in one way or another. The government can't just create jobs as it did during the New Deal given that social isolation is essential, but the problem with UBI as an economic stimulus though is the fact that at least in my area, everything is now closed aside from the corporate chains, and grocery stores. People will likely use that money for subsistence (food and rent), and if they are recirculating it into the economy, it will likely be larger corporations that aren't doing shit to help fight this pandemic that will benefit. |

right on the mark imo. UBI is a fun idea but are most people going to use that slight boost in disposable income to pay for things they need to pay for? i'd rather the state alleviate costs levied indirectly on the lower class (aforementioned prohibitive rent, medical costs, daycare costs, etc.). it's a nice way to keep small businesses afloat, though, i guess, i'd hate for corps like walmart to buy everything up once the recession kills everything else unable to weather the storm |
