| Musical recommendations from my country
I'm from Argentina, and wanted to recommend some albums from my country that in my opinion are really good and worth listening. I hope you listen to them and comment your opinions on them!
PD: Sorry about my english! | 1 | | Serú Girán La Grase de las Capitales
Serú Girán's second album, "La Grasa de las Capitales" is I think one of the greatest albums I've heard ever, and Serú Girán is I think the best band that Argentina ever had. The four guys who played for this band (Charly García on vocals, keys and guitar; David Lebón on vocals and guitar; Pedro Aznar on vocals and bass; Oscar Moro on drums) are truly masters on their main instruments. The album goes from proggressive rock to jazz fusion and is a great album to start listening to this band.
Favorite tracks: La Grasa de las Capitales, Viernes 3 AM, Canción de Hollywood | 2 | | Soda Stereo Dynamo
This was not the most popular Soda Stereo album by the time they released it, back in 1992, but it sure won the heart of Soda's fans as the time passed. After releasing their biggest album, Canción Animal, they changed everything they sounded like, to make this shoegaze, alternative rock album. An album way ahead of times in Argentina and Latin America in general, highly influenced by My Bloody Valentine's album Loveless, it's with no doubt an awesome album.
Favorite tracks: Toma la Ruta, En Remolinos, Claroscuro | 3 | | Patricio Rey y sus redonditos de ricota Momo sampler
One of the most popular bands in Argentina, yet the band has only played once outside the country, in Uruguay. This band never used media to advertise their shows, and that's probably the main reason why they are not known outside Argentina, but it is with no doubt a band that changed music in the country. Patricio Rey y sus Redonditos de Ricota's (also known as "Los Redondos") last album is definitely one of my favorites. Since their previous album, Ultimo Bondi a Finisterre, they had change their sound, going for a more experimental rock, introducing electronic sounds. This albums follows those ideas for the songs, also vestiges of Celtic music can be heard through the album, plus murga music. One of the strongest points on this band are the cryptic letters, filled with metaphores and at times hard to understand but still great.
Favorite tracks: El Templo de Momo, La Murga de la Virgencita, Una Piba con la Remera de Greenpeace | 4 | | Charly García Clics Modernos
The second album by who possibly is the greatest argentinian rock musician ever, is definitely a gem. After breaking up with Serú Girán, Charly released his first solo album Pubis Angelical/Yendo de la Cama al Living in 1982, a really good album that features some of his best tracks. One year later, in 1983, he releases this new wave, pop rock album that was immediately a hit. With lyrics against the Argentinian gobernment (at the times, there was a military gobernment in the country), about the argentinian society and also some personal experiences, and the participation of Pedro Aznar (Serú Girán's, Pat Metheny Group), Larry Carlton and Casey Scheverrel, the album is awesome.
Favorite tracks: Nos Siguen Pegando Abajo (Pecado Mortal), Los Dinosaurios, Ojos de Video Tape | 5 | | Bersuit Hijos Del Culo
Bersuit Vergarabat is a band formed in 1988, and their music features a wide range of popular genres, mixing rock with cumbia, tango, murga, reggae, candombe and chacarera. Hijos del Culo is their fifth album, released in the year 2000, and is in my opinion their best album. Like in all of Bersuit's albums, there are some tracks that I don't really like, but those are just one or two on this album, and the rest of them are just great. As I said before, the band combines rock with a wide range of genres, and in this album that is not an exception. You can find on Hijos del Culo some rock tracks mixed perfectly with cuarteto, cumbia and murga, and that's what makes this album super interesting and fun to listen to.
Favorite tracks: Desconexión Sideral, Negra Murguera, Veneno de Humanidad | 6 | | Gustavo Cerati Amor Amarillo
This album is Gustavo Cerati's first solo album, released while he was still playing with Soda Stereo, in the year 1993. On this album, Cerati explores new textures on his music, taking a dream pop, neo psychedelic direction for his sounds. It features the participation of his ex band mate, Zeta Bosio, his then wife Cecilia Amenábar, and producer Tweety González. The album tracklist shows a cover, the song Bajan, released originally by Pescado Rabioso on the album Artaud and written by Luis Alberto Spinetta. It is an album that hooks you on the very first song and doesn't let you go until it finishes. Great album.
Favorite tracks: Amor Amarillo, Lisa, Pulsar | 7 | | Usted Senalemelo II
Finally, a current band. Usted Señalemelo is a trio formed in Mendoza, Argentina. Their self titled album was released in 2015, with a very juvenile, catchy sound that put them on the map. It was a good debut, but in my opinion, their second album, II (2017), shows how much they grew musically. With a pretty psychedelic sound, a lot of synthesizers and a pretty unique sound, this one is in my opinion one of the best argentinian records of the decade.
Favorite tracks: Láser 420, Big Bang, Pana | 8 | | WOS CARAVANA
Last but not least. WOS is an argentinian rapper who started to gain fame while he was competing in El Quinto Escalón, a freestyle contest. He released his first track ever in 2018, named Andrómeda, and since then he started working on his new album. The album called CARAVANA was released on the 4th of October, and was a hit. During it's 7 tracks and 19 minutes lenght, WOS goes through a wide range of genres like funk, rock or trap, but without making you feel like the songs don't belong together. One of the greatest acts on the current musical scene on Argentina.
Favorite tracks: Canguro, Fresco, Luz Delito | |
