| High-Key Depresso
For this list I want: songs that are straight up depressing but no one realises they are because they're poppy or whatever. | 1 | | John Mellencamp American Fool
Jack and Diane
Depressing because: the hokey verses about a couple of young American kids lead to a big singalong but hang on "Life goes on long after the thrill of living is gone"? Did Leonard Cohen co-write this? | 2 | | Harry Chapin Verities and Balderdash
Cats in the Cradle
Depressing because: everyone thinks the line "My boy was just like me" is a proud reflection on the way his son has become a man and a father. Actually, it is a realisation from an old man at the end of his life that by never making time for his son in his childhood, he has made a void between them that is too late to mend. | |

05.05.20 | Sorority Noise - "Disappeared" from the album You're Not As ___As You Think.
Lyrics make it obvious it's about losing loved ones and clinical depression, but it's pretty upbeat. Thematically and lyrically one of the most depressing albums ever. | Snake.
05.05.20 | literally every single song off after hours | botulist
05.05.20 | The copacabana song | ReturnToRock
05.06.20 | The Killers - Mr Brightside. Dude manages to pull himself out of neurotic depression only to let his own mind drag him right back in as he imagines what his girlfriend may-but-is-probably-not-doing with another guy at that exact moment.
Pixies - Here Comes Your Man. It's about a funeral. Seriously. Listen to the lyrics.
Pixies - Wave of Mutilation. This one's about a suicide.
Nirvana - Lithium. Guy tries to convince himself he's happy and fails.
Nirvana - Stain. He is one; he says it himself.
Nirvana - Been a Son. About a girl who is unloved by her parents because they wanted a boy.
Nirvana - (New Wave) Polly. Still about a rape, but now with a fast, pop-rocky beat.
Green Day - Havin' A Blast. About a mentally ill shooter holding people hostage. Or maybe a school shooting. You know - for kids!
Green Day - Coming Clean. About coming out as gay during your teen years.
Icona Pop - I Don't Care. About crashing your car into a bridge, watching it burn, and not caring because you broke up with your ex.
Bruce Springsteen - Glory Days. About growing up to be a working-class schmo and missing your 'Glory Days' of being young.
Bruce Springsteen - Born in the USA. About growing up a working-class schmo and being owned by The Man.
Ramones - Mental Hell. 'Frustration, mistrust, aggravation, disgust, mental hell / I'm not feeling very well.'
Ramones - I Wanna Be Sedated. Title is self-explanatory.
The Who - I'm A Boy. About a boy whose parents treat him like a girl, and the gender identity issues that causes for him growing up. Yes, in 1967.
