08.22.20 | 2 is one of the GOATs for me | PorkchopGMX
08.22.20 | I put Odd Soul at #1 because it’s way easier to listen to, and it’s very energetic, while also being very enjoyable. Mutemath’s self titled is awesome and it deserves its 4.5, but it’s sleep inducing at some times. If self titled didn’t put me to sleep, it would go on top. But they’re pretty much tied. | Calc
08.23.20 | I feel you there. I wouldn't call #2 sleep inducing but it's definitely situational. Not a pop it in and play anytime type of album. | Ecnalzen
08.23.20 | I loooove the s/t. Odd Soul is also excellent and I would agree on it being easier to listen to.
I haven't listened to Play Dead yet. When I heard pretty much all the founding members besides the singer were out I didn't have high hopes for it and have been putting it off. | PorkchopGMX
08.24.20 | I don’t think you’ll like Play Dead. I do, very much. Maybe it’s because I wanted to hear something more modern alt rocky (maybe because Twenty One Pilots are one of my favorite bands and I want them to do something else other than milk LOC), but I like it a lot. I cannot stop listening to “Placed on Hold”. IMO the only two songs that are forgettable on Play Dead are “Stroll On” and “Everything’s New”. Overall I think that it’s a huge step up from Vitals and it showcases a lot of potential, however the biggest issue is that all the potential goes nowhere because the band broke up right after the album was released. If you like Mutemath’s early stuff more, Voice in the Silence EP will probably be better for you.
I was gonna put something very long here justifying my 3.5/5 for Armistice however it was too long. | Dewinged
08.24.20 | 2 and 4 are incredible. Odd Soul is alright, the rest is not for me. | Ecnalzen
08.24.20 | I liked Vitals quite a bit actually. It was fun. I haven't fully given Armistice a chance for whatever reason. I remember liking what I heard but never coming back to it like I do S/t, Odd Soul, and Vitals.
I will probably try Play Dead Out and that EP soon. I actually didn't realize they fully broke up nor that they put the EP out. | PorkchopGMX
08.24.20 | Ok so here’s a summary for what I wrote for Armistice: Armistice isn’t bad at all, however it pales in comparison to its debut and also removes what was best on that album. But it’s much more accessible, and it flows better. Unfortunately Odd Soul also does that, which basically dwarfs that advantage. Nonetheless Armistice was enjoyable, and it has the most chilled out tracks of any album (No Response, Pins and Needles, Odds) other than Vitals but I don’t really like Vitals. The Nerve is a great opener, Title track is good, No Response and Pins And Needles I really like, Clipping and Burden are amazing, Lost Year is terrible (Piano ballads ≠ Mutemath), Backfire is forgettable, Architecture was also forgettable even though it was the closer, the other tracks range from ok to good. Even though the bad things about this album are really bad, the good things are really good. The album as a whole is only really bad when comparing it to self titled. I can’t call this album a “sophomore slump” because some of the ideas here (accessibility and flow, plus some track ideas) were handled better and combined with new ideas which made Odd Soul much better. I would call this album more like a “learning experience” for the band. Overall, this album is far from perfect and it’s redundant in some areas but it’s also enjoyable enough to warrant a listen. 3.5/5 | PorkchopGMX
09.23.20 | Correction: Architecture is only a bonus track for the U.S. iTunes edition, which is my version, Burden is the closer. |
