tyman's 2020 Awards
Well, I'm too lazy to rank my favorite albums of the year, so how about we just give out some awards to albums instead. |
1 | | Fit For a King The Path
Worst Metal AOTY
What even happened here? Can't believe I was actually looking forward to this... guess this could also be the biggest disappointment of the year too. |
2 | | In This Moment Mother
The Other Worst Metal AOTY
Yeah, don't know what was going on here. Just a dumpster fire of an album. |
3 | | Eminem Music to Be Murdered By
Worst Rap AOTY
Long past his prime, lot of lost potential here. Some fun tracks... but not gonna be spinning this much in the future. |
4 | | Lamb of God Lamb of God
Most Average Album
It's Lamb of God being Lamb of God... not much else. |
5 | | Static-X Project Regeneration Vol. 1
Biggest Surprise
Honestly thought this band was done for... guess I was wrong. This album is pretty fun with some of their most enjoyable moments. |
6 | | Remeo Modern Realism
Sputnik Spotlight
Just wanted to highlight this new album right here. Dolving's third full length embraces the weirder style of his efforts, mixing influences of Incubus with experimentation and heavier elements throughout. Simply a fun record to spin, give it a shot! |
7 | | Trent Reznor and Atticus Ross Soul (Original Motion Picture Score)
Best Soundtrack
Even though it recently came out, this is my favorite soundtrack of the year by far. The mix of jazz compositions and the ambient work of Rezner and Ross is perfectly executed. I usually have a tough time with most soundtracks, but I can listen to this on repeat without getting bored. |
8 | | Brockhampton SATURATION II
Favorite (non-2020) Discovery
Never gave Brockhampton a chance until this year, and man was I missing out. I love the entire trilogy, but this is easily my favorite of the series. Super catchy tracks, great flow, and just a lot of fun overall. |
9 | | Oranssi Pazuzu Mestarin Kynsi
Album that didn't live up to the hype
Yeah, didn't really get this album honestly. Tried to get into it numerous times, but it really didn't mesh well with me... I can see the appeal I guess, but it ain't for me. |
10 | | The Ghost Inside The Ghost Inside
Biggest Fall
At first, I absolutely loved this album and thought it was fantastic. But each time I listened to it, it slowly got less and less enjoyable for me. Now, it all just feels pretty repetitive and doesn't really hit anything special. |
11 | | Boston Manor Glue
Biggest Grower
Initially, I felt like this was a pretty mediocre pop punk record, but it kept drawing me back in with each listen. Now, it's easily one of my favorite records of the year and one that I consistently come back to on a regular basis. |
12 | | Taylor Swift Evermore
Best Taylor Swift Album not called "folklore" from 2020
Pretty self-explanatory. |
13 | | Trapt Shadow Work
Best Trapt Album in 2020
such a classic. |
14 | | Kars Landman Clouds
Sputnik Spotlight
Another sputnik project to highlight, this one from Beardog. Although vocals are still a bit of an issue, this is a fun record that has great atmosphere and enjoyable songwriting. (You can check out my review for more description ;]) |
15 | | Poppy I Disagree
Best Whatever-You-Wanna-Call-This Album
This thing is all over the place... I love it. From metal to pop to industrial to noise, this album hits a lot but does it well. I understand why people wouldn't dig this... but I do so here we are. |
16 | | Phoebe Bridgers Punisher
Best Depresso Album (aka my penultimate AOTY)
Yeah I love this album, but man is it moody... pretty killer with the emotions. One of my most listened to records this year and for good reason |
17 | | Honey Harper Starmaker
Best "Cosmic Country" ... actually just the Best Country Album but still
This was the album that kickstarted my journey into country... something that hasn't been done in all my years of listening to music. There was something about this album that kept me coming back, and man am I glad it did. Definitely one of the better records from this year. |
18 | | Run the Jewels RTJ4
Best Rap Album
This is just a fun jam. Great beats, awesome flow, and genuinely great lyrics that tell a great story through each individual song. Although I never really got into them before, this album instantly got me hooked and has remained a top contender this year. |
19 | | clipping. Visions of Bodies Being Burned
Best Spooky-Scary Horrorcore Rap Thing
The haunting atmosphere throughout this entire thing is certainly unsettling, but it sure is addicting. The flow on this album is intense rapid fire that always surprises me and the production on this is ridiculous. Top 5 of the year no doubt. |
20 | | The Weeknd After Hours
Best Older-Influenced Pop
The integration of 80's synth style pop with the modern unity of The Weeknd's contemporary pop style is executed to near perfection. With catchy hooks, fantastic vocals, and impressive synth work cohesively create an impressive record that I've consistently returned to. |
21 | | Dua Lipa Future Nostalgia
Best Pop Album
This thing is ADDICTING. At first I wasn't a huge fan, but this record wouldn't let me go. Extremely catchy disco-influenced pop with fun hooks and amazing vocals. Top 10 record for sure, but this keeps growing for me. |
22 | | Haken Virus
Best Progressive Metal Album
What a fantastically composed metal album. As a continuation of their previous record, Virus embraces heavier elements, catchier hooks, and a more consistent effort from the band. |
23 | | Invent, Animate Greyview
Best Metalcore Album
"Best Metalcore" feels like an oxymoron nowadays, but this album genuinely hits the mark. Although not as good as their previous records, Invent Animate's third full length is full of technical riffs and drumming and an impressive performance from the new vocalist. (Another album that you should check out my review on) |
24 | | Daygraves Silver
Best Newcomer
With his debut EP, Daygraves hits the mark with a perfect blend of shoegaze and black metal. Similar to the styles of An Autumn for Crippled Children and Deafheaven, Silver shows a great potential in the genre with a solid foundation for his career. |
25 | | Taylor Swift Folklore
Song of the Year - Exile (feat. Bon Iver)
Although most people don't find this song to be all that amazing, I personally think it's one of her best she's made. The contrast between Justin Vernon and Taylor Swift is absolutely beautiful and it always hits the mark for me. |
26 | | Taylor Swift Folklore
Album of the Year
Guess I probably should've spaced out these last two since... I'm basically double posting folklore but whatever. Anyway, this really caught me off guard. I've always enjoyed Taylor Swift occasionally, but none of her albums ever really struck me in such a big way. Folklore though, this was a whole different experience, and one that hasn't been topped by any other album from this year. |
