Spliffhanger67
02.23.21 | Yeah, my buddy who was a big death-metalhead back in the day got heavy into RTJ after the second album came out. I think that second album was his favourite, which is fair. That Close Your Eyes track slays. |

02.23.21 | I’m big into metal, and I have to say I love that Public Enemy album. I also listen to Tech N9ne, Sadistik, and Dalek. That’s all that ever really appealed to me. |

02.23.21 | Dalek is a killer call, I don't know why I didn't remember them. |

02.23.21 | The Bug - London Zoo
I obv heard a lot of Beastie Boys too

02.23.21 | As a metalhead, I would say Cannibal Ox is the best on this list so far. I'd also recommend Dr. Dooom - First Come, First Served for similarities to metal. The instrumentals are darker, the rapping is fast, and the lyrics are messed up. MC Bushpig - Wank of Death also works |
Rowhaus
02.23.21 | Check out Dalek - Absence. One of the best for sure. |
ShadowRemains
02.23.21 | mobb deep - the infamous |
Spliffhanger67
02.23.21 | Aight, so so far we have:
Rx-Peao
Lil' Wop
Denzel Curry
Three 6 Mafia
Koopsta Knicca
Dalek
Geto Boys (and by extension Scarface)
Techno Animal
City Morgue
Tech N9ne (which, even though the guy is talented, his music blows IMO)
The Bug
Beastie Boys
Dr. Dooom (and by extension Dr. Octagon)
MC Bushpig, &
Mobb Deep
Good stuff here. |

02.24.21 | as someone who took the plunge in the last five years, I really wish people wouldn't have given me "albums with x that might appeal to a metal fan".
Just show them good albums. Show them the breadth of the genre and how diverse it can be. a metalhead should appreciate that.
Illmatic / Hell Hath No Fury / The Blueprint / TPAB / Doggy Style are my recs. Something will appeal to them within those five, and you'll have your starting point. |

02.24.21 | honestly full disclosure back when I was a metal purist teenage shithead the "hip-hop" that helped me transition into the genre was all the Anticon shit (why?, subtle, doseone, themselves, deep puddle, clouddead, sage francis, sole, 13 and god etc), Atmosphere, El-P, Cannibal Ox, Darc Mind, Cage, Blueprint, stuff like that. Various Trip Hop and Downtempo stuff helped a lot too, I remember being big in RJD2's Deadringer and early Bonobo and stuff like that. |

back then i was super closed minded about electronic music in general and thought it was all shit and it's ironic that now electronic takes up the biggest portion of my music intake and i don't care for very much metal at all. so i pretend metal is as irredeemable as i thought electronic was back when i only liked metal just 4 THE MEME |

02.24.21 | Yeah it’s bloody mad innit. Ppl are crazy.
I’ve noticed that Pots (on here anyway), I could speculate as to maybe why but not sure it adds up. I guess neither genre is necessarily reliant on melodic hooks or choruses to pull the listener in. Both can be more rhythmic/have ‘groove’. There are exceptions of course, but yeah. Maybe? It might also be a product of environment, but that’s not easy to guage. |
Lord(e)Po)))ts
02.24.21 | i've always attributed it to the shared element of machismo |

02.24.21 | we should ask progmaster |
Lord(e)Po)))ts
02.24.21 | also if there is one other thing that metalheads and hip-hop headz have in common it is getting blunted af |
Demon of the Fall
02.24.21 | Oh really, that’s shallow ‘base instinct‘ level reasoning that I wasn’t expecting but could make sense, haha. |
MillionDead
02.24.21 | @Demon: I could concur. Maybe it's a lot of people that are like "FUCK that sing song shit". In a lot of metal and a lot hip hop, the vocals and instrumental are much more rhythm based. But catchy rhythms too. I feel like there're more factors than anyone could even think about at once though.
"i've always attributed it to the shared element of machismo"
I guess I could see that, but I feel more like there's a ton of rap and metal that don't necessarily have anything to do with being macho at all, it's just a lot of it is made by men. Idk it's weird. Did every modern metal fan have a nu metal phase as a kid? Idk but I sure did. But I came from a perspective of the hip hop aspect making the metal/rock parts more palatable, whereas I could see the metal/rock bits making hip hop more palatable for others who were more rock oriented. |
MillionDead
02.24.21 | But I always vibed with the straight up alternative rock, pop punk, and metal stuff that you'd hear on kids TV shows/anime too. That Power Rangers intro was straight up metal. Either way, when I heard Slipknot and Linkin Park and SOAD in the 4th grade, it was off to the races. I was into Deathcore and scene kid post-hardcore by middle school lol. And I come from a place of growing up black in Mississippi with no rock music in the house and a lot of my youngest peers being into hip hop that was going on. My dad didn't like hip hop at all but my mom would play it occasionally but rarely.
I honestly had to get into rock and hip hop both mostly independently. |
Lord(e)Po)))ts
02.24.21 | "but I feel more like there's a ton of rap and metal that don't necessarily have anything to do with being macho at all,"
yeah, and i said this knowing that this conversation could go this direction, but when i think of and generalize the metalheads i've known that like hip-hop and what kinds of metal/hip-hop they enjoy it has very much all been the blunted machismo stuff lol.
on the flipside - reflecting on myself - i was an angsty metaller and liked emotional stuff so it makes sense that a lot of my hip-hip gateway music was equally angsty shit in contrast to what i was talking about above. |
Egarran
