05.23.21 | What are people's 1st choice for 2001? Year seems low on outstanding candidates |
NorthernSkylark
05.23.21 | Life without buildings - any other city
The shins - oh, inverted world
Hope Sandoval and the warm intentions - Bavarian fruit bread
I’ve only heard 7 here and it’s great |
DoofDoof
05.23.21 | Lark - 'Oh, Inverted World', just checking I have it rated the same score on my AOTY account as the Liars album...maybe should have made the cut |
Avagantamos
05.23.21 | Cold Vein is easily my #1 pick for 2001 debuts. it's a top 10 album overall for me |
DoofDoof
05.23.21 | Definitely one of the best hip hop albums of the 2000s |
zakalwe
05.23.21 | Have to have The Strokes in there. Didn’t Black Rebel Motorcycles debut come out in 2001 as well?
Not unbelievable albums by any means but definitely good.
A real case in point of how everything in the 2000s became just a little more ‘flat’ less ‘organic’ and more reliant on trying to copy what had come before then being something else entirely. |
GhandhiLion
05.23.21 | ^nonsense, there's lots of great modern music that isn't just a revival of the past.

Scott Tuma and Califone are awesome |
zakalwe
05.23.21 | Yeah it’s ‘great’ not trailblazing in the slightest. |
GhandhiLion
05.23.21 | nah there are a lot of trailblazers. #3 is a good start |
NorthernSkylark
05.23.21 | Oh yeah I totally missed is this it that’s should be on here too |
zakalwe
05.23.21 | @ghand Leave it out.
It’s a great album but you walked into any wanky clothes shop in the late 90s, early 2000s which tried to be ‘funky and fresh’ and there would be something that sounded like it coming from the speakers.
Other than 7 nobody had a fucking clue who any of these were and that’s still largely the same case nowadays. |
CaliggyJack
05.23.21 | Cannibal Ox is correct |
GhandhiLion
05.23.21 | some other debuts:
cLOUDDEAD - cLOUDDEAD
Khanate - Khanate
Anaal Nathrakh - The Codex Necro
múm - Yesterday Was Dramatic Today Is OK
Steve Lehman Quintet - Structural Fire
Manitoba - Start Breaking My Heart |
GhandhiLion
05.23.21 | "and there would be something that sounded like it coming from the speakers."
You've got to be kidding
"Other than 7 nobody had a fucking clue who any of these were and that’s still largely the same case nowadays."
Well most people don't have a clue what most of the best music is and it's always been that way. Music is not, and has never been, a meritocracy.
|
zakalwe
05.23.21 | That is true.
You’d still have something that resonated in the underground though and anchored the scene into something new which people knew about whether directly or indirectly.
All this stuff (barring 7) has only come to light in the last few years and it’s still not ‘irreplaceable’
|
GhandhiLion
05.23.21 | What do you mean by irreplaceable? |
zakalwe
05.23.21 | You could exchange it for a number of identikit other albums.
The albums themselves are not symbolic of youth culture or boundary changing like hip hop or metal was in the 80s or alt rock was in the 90s |
GhandhiLion
05.23.21 | An album doesn't need to be followed by a swarm of "identikit other albums" to be great. In fact, some known artists are not imitated by others because it's difficult to do so. Most trends are trends because they are easy to replicate.
ALBUMS are not symbolic of youth culture*. You are looking in the wrong place.
*anymore! |
zakalwe
05.23.21 | You were born too late |
DoofDoof
05.23.21 | 'ALBUMS are not symbolic of youth culture. You are looking in the wrong place.'
zak is right, they really were - and in the best possible way too |
zakalwe
05.23.21 | Thanks doof. Bloody brats. |
GhandhiLion
05.23.21 | I was talking about NOW in the 21st century you dumb dumbs |
theBoneyKing
05.23.21 | I wouldn’t expect Doof’s top debuts to be representative of youth culture anyways, not even in 2001.
Plus, plenty of the greatest/moment defining bands have weak debut albums so I wouldn’t call out the quality of debuts as representative of the general zeitgeist. |
BlondeGuardian
05.23.21 | "I was talking about NOW in the 21st century you dumb dumbs"
I wish it wasn't so |
rockarollacola
05.24.21 | I recognize 0 of these artists/albums. |
