06.09.21 | Hey d00ds long time no see |
budgie
06.09.21 | never played modern |
Dedes
06.09.21 | Modern is fun. It's very meta based though so you really have to adjust your decks based on what you're facing but I guess that's every format really. What do you usually playm |
JKing92
06.09.21 | Am I the only one who thought "MTG" was for Marjorie Taylor Greene upon reading the thread name? |
budgie
06.09.21 | standard or casual
simulated drafts of really old sets are fun too |
Sharenge
06.09.21 | my deck got stolen in the 5th grade
rip in ripperonis |
evilford
06.09.21 | Sup dedes.
What's ur list?
Also modern is kind of a lame duck format rn with mh2 coming out next week |
Avagantamos
06.09.21 | in high school, this one kin in my gym class always brought a couple decks to school. he has an awesome black/green deck that he let me play against him with. contagion clasp was a sick card I remember |
someone
06.09.21 | never got to play much of it, which sucks.
always loved the lore and artwork and was colecting the cards just for that with the hope that one day i might just play |
botb
06.09.21 | My wife and I have played a lot over the pandemic. I also managed to pull a foil phrexyan vorinclex a few months back and offloaded that for a cool 225$ |
evilford
06.09.21 | I play modern humans and I have it foiled out. So when imperial recruiter was spoiled in mh2 I was like "there's no way we don't play at least 3 of this" so I bought 3 foils from masters 25 but im afraid it's not actually going to make the cut now lol. Sad |
Dedes
06.09.21 | My deck right now is 4x Death's Shadow, 3x Varolz, 3 Putrefy, 2 Dreadbore, 2 Terminate, 3 Grisly Salvage, 1 Grapple With the Past, 2 Whip of Erebos, 3 Dreg Mangler, 1 Bloodghast, 4 Lotleth Troll, 4 Slitherhead, 2 Corpsejack, 2 Korozda Guildmage and a Jarad Golgari Lich Lord. TBH these last 5 can probably all be traded out for more value creatures like Bloodghast although Imma be sad to see my boy Corpsejack go. He was a fucking G in Theros standard man. My landbase is kind of basic. Largely forests and swamps but I have a few scry lands, an Overgrown Tomb and a few Hissing Quagmire's (low-key one of the best cards in my deck and probably one of the most wicked creature lands).
I can fairly well as of right now against other creature heavy decks like tron until they Whip out the Tormods Crypt which stings some. Jace control however is a nightmare lol |
evilford
06.09.21 | If you're playing green and feel weak to counters, I'd strongly recommend veil of summer. |
budgie
06.10.21 | any of you modern peeps ever try an oath of druids combo deck? |
Dedes
06.11.21 | @Ford
I'm surprised that didn't cross my mind.
Tbh as long as I can protect both Lotleth Troll and Varolz it's gonna be a rough go for most control I'd imagine. Lotleth Troll can easily hit 4/3 turn 2 and if the Death's Shadow Varolz combo gets scavenged onto Lotleth Troll it's RIP. Also nah budgie. What's the combo |
Dedes
06.12.21 | Modern Horizons prerelease is fucking sick oml
Almost came my pantalones when I saw Shardless Agent come back |
evilford
06.13.21 | Yeah set is gas. Blew way too much money on it lol. Good news is I just about have my full set of each fetch now tho
Did a Saturday prerelease flight today too. I've never done a prerelease in my 21 yrs of playing mtg. Went 2-2 was super fun |
budgie
06.13.21 | is anyone paying attention to standard? is it fun again? hows black doing? |
evilford
06.13.21 | Idk man, I haven't touched standard since darksteel lol. Ravager ruined it for me |
Purpl3Spartan
06.13.21 | 4 is the good stuff |
Dedes
06.13.21 | I haven't played standard since Battle For Zendikar.
Too much to keep up with. Decks cycling in and out just ain't my thing
@ford send me all your Verdant Catacombs pls and ty |
Dedes
06.13.21 | I think Grey Merchant of Asphodel made a come back in the new Theros set though
Boy hitting people for 8 or 9 in one go was wicked
Not as wicked as getting totally trampled by Xenagos in Planeswalker and God form however |
evilford
06.13.21 | I am hanging on to all my fetches, sorry :P |
Dedes
06.18.21 | As everyone seems to be lmao
Fetches are so much money man
Fucking UGH |
evilford
06.19.21 | Dude theyre so cheap rn. I traded for a verdant catacombs yesterday, he pulled it up and was like "37 dollars". U bet your sweet ass I'm trading for that.. I still just about shit my pants every time. Tarns for $40 apiece? Fuckin hell yeah
Im building living end tho, and u know what isn't cheap? Force of negation. It's a rare printed in the last two years and it's deadass a hundred dollars. What the fuck |
budgie
06.19.21 | interesting its like a remake of force of will |
evilford
06.19.21 | I mean fow is strictly better but fon is legal in modern so yeah |
evilford
06.19.21 | If fow was modern legal it'd be $300 probably |
Dedes
06.20.21 | I know they're cheap by fetch standards but like
I think I'm only gonna go for it if Verdant goes sub 30
I personally just have a hard time dropping mad money on singles |
Dedes
06.20.21 | Also yeah Force of Negation is fucking wild
When I first saw it I was like "they're really testing the power limits of modern now".
Everything seems to be getting incrementally stronger however. I got friggin wiped yesterday by burn, Mana ramp and prowess triggers by like, turn 2 yesterday lol.
I can't complain however when I also dropped Lotleth Troll as a 7/6 by turn 2 as well lol |
Dedes
06.25.21 | Goddamn I love Bloodghast |
TheSpaceMan
06.25.21 | mh2 slaps in draft but fuck modern i m o |
budgie
06.25.21 | the og dual lands art is so pretty |
Dedes
06.26.21 | I love old MTG art aesthetic
It's pleasant and a little dorky in the best of ways
Art wise the new Theros set is also gorgeous though (new being a set from like, 2 years ago lmao) |
Assemblage
06.26.21 | I haven't kept up with any of it since Dominaria, but I did buy a complete set of those cards because I just really liked the aesthetic of those particularly. |
evilford
06.26.21 | Living end is powerful
Also modern rules |
budgie
06.26.21 | sup evil my bro |
evilford
06.26.21 | What is up with thee my brethren |
Dedes
06.27.21 | Never played Living End. What it do?
Also building a Scute Swarm/Scute Mob hybrid so any suggestions would rule |
evilford
06.27.21 | Very simple but very powerful deck. Play a bunch of big cycling fatties. Cycle them into the yard to draw cards and most of the time completely ignore anything your opponent is doing. Then turn 3 or 4 play shardless agent or violent outburst and cascade into living end and put 15-20 power on the board and board wipe ur opponent at the same time. Plays 4 force of negation and 4 brazen borrower for relevant interaction |
Dedes
06.27.21 | Oh damn ok
That's a wicked combo. Anything with Cascade automatically whips.
Just pray your opponent doesnt have Rest in Peace or Tormods Crypt and you're friggin set |
TheSpaceMan
06.28.21 | scute swarm loves fetches obviously, even running fabled passage it worth it imo depending on your meta |
TheSpaceMan
06.28.21 | im more of a commander player tho |
Dedes
06.30.21 | Yeah I figured fetches. For now I'm going budget with some evolving wilds but I'll definitely try getting a playset.
I'm running green with a little red. Mostly for Mina and Denn bouncing my lands back and forth and for Gruul War Chants sick menace ability.
20 1/1's are scary but make them 2/1 with menace and ur wrecked |
budgie
06.30.21 | eeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeee |
ShadowRemains
06.30.21 | thought this was going to be about marjorie taylor greene and am happy it isn't |
DamnVanne
06.30.21 | Ive been thinking of getting back into the game a bit. Getting the people to play with was kind of a hassle and I was so disappointed with the creative direction with the dinosaurs and pirates set. Ive always been about casual and a bit of commander |
Dedes
07.15.21 | Orzhov Stoneblade is fierce oml
On another note Undergrowth Champion might be my new favorite landfall card |
Dedes
07.15.21 | Also uber late but @Vanne
That was only a block
The theme was a bit dry for that set tho imo
Even if we got a few sweet cards like Dockside Extortionist |
budgie
07.15.21 | is green still op in standard
been like that since............. ........uhhh WAR? |
budgie
07.15.21 | oh cool innistrad coming back this year. might take a look then. love innistrad flavor |
Dedes
07.19.21 | New Innistrad?
Fuck I didn't know about that. My favorite set outside of Phyrexia/Mirrodin is Innistrad.
Hopefully they amp it up cause imo a lot of these last few sets outside of Modern Masters felt a tad weak. |
TheSpaceMan
07.21.21 | commander is the way. especially if you prefer to make your own unique decks. theres so much more room for interaction |
budgie
07.21.21 | ive never played commander but i hate the idea of it |
TheSpaceMan
07.21.21 | whys that? |
Dedes
07.21.21 | Commander is a great format.
It definitely opens up room for larger mana costs to be more viable and is overall a little more fun.
Only reason I sometimes prefer modern is because it's imo a little more cutthroat. Less room for fuckups even if it what's good can be more limiting. |
TheSpaceMan
07.21.21 | yeah modern is obv more competitive it leaves way less room for bad decisions but on the same token i feel that what luck you get in respect to the opponent's luck was way more weight on the game then in commander. simply cause commander lets you eat more of that dumb shit like having a bunk opening hand or getting mana flooded or even the opponent top decking answers etc |
budgie
07.22.21 | oh
it's because i love having playsets in my deck
making a consistent synergistic deck tickles my perineum
|
TheSpaceMan
07.22.21 | i promise you commander decks have WAY more synergy |
TheSpaceMan
07.22.21 | consistency def not tho |
TheSpaceMan
07.22.21 | https://www.archidekt.com/decks/956201#Izzet_Wheels
heres an old version of one of my decks i made. you get the commander out and draw dumb amount of cards off cheap faithless looting style cards (cause of her 2nd ability), and suddenly cards like forbid, turbulent dreams, lightning axe, and firestorm are fucking nuts. on top of that cards like anger and wonder get tossed in the yard to help you draw so many cards AND are providing huge value. |
Dedes
07.22.21 | Commanders whole focus is in extreme synergy |
budgie
07.22.21 | well sure nearly all of successful mtg hedges on some deck synergy, im more talking card-specific interactions |
evilford
07.22.21 | I played commander for a while. Saying there is "more" synergy in commander decks is slightly misleading probably. I would say that there is probably a higher raw amount of synergy in most successful commander decks, but in the most successful decks in competitive 60-card constructed formats, there is a much higher concentration of synergy. Like in commander you have 1 commander and 99 cards that interact well with each other, but the "ceiling" on the level of synergy can only be so high because of the high card count and singleton rule. Whereas in modern for example, most of the most successful decks play mostly 4 ofs of cards that specifically interact better with each other than any other cards.
There are decks like Jund (which has mostly faded into obscurity at this point) where you could argue that the deck just plays the best version of the best cards in the format. I.e. lightning bolt and tarmogoyf have little interaction or synergy with each other (save for the p/t change on tarmogoyf at state-based speed) outside of just being the best 1 drop removal spell in the format, and one of the best creatures, respectively. Whereas in decks like hammer time or urza's kitchen, each card in the deck compliments the rest of the cards in the deck at a different level and concentration (see: 4-of) than what is possible in commander. I mean hell, in kitchen decks, there are usually 4 asmoranomardicadaistinaculdacars and 4 underworld cookbooks and these cards even specifically reference each other in their text boxes. That is indicative of the level of synergy that cards in most successful decks in competitive 60-card constructed formats have to have with each other in order to even make the cut to be in the deck.
Imo.
I prefer modern as a format. Ive just been playing 60-card constructed formats for too long to really get attached to a 99-card singleton format. And I like the competitive aspect of it too. Got another tournament a couple hours away on Saturday. Nothing gets me amped quite like comp REL |
budgie
07.22.21 | mic drop |
evilford
07.22.21 | So in short, is there more synergy in modern than commander or vice versa? Yes and no. It's a different measure and ultimately can't be compared super well |
TheSpaceMan
07.23.21 | thats honestly a really interesting point ford and i can get behind that. i still think commander is more synergistic, you get WAY more types of cards in line with a single theme then in a competitive modern deck which has to be built much much much more rigidly. but i totally can see the other side of the argument. i just personally dont think running 4 counter spells and 4 lightning bolts and a couple brazen borrowers cause you gotta have direct answers for tempo is really "synergy" |
budgie
07.23.21 | he was saying decks that run strong vacuum cards like lightning bolt are the exception |
evilford
07.23.21 | I mean yeah there are examples of synergy and examples of good cards just being good in both formats. I prefer modern personally, but I respect the hell out of good commander players. The level of rules, interaction, card and synergy knowledge you have to have to be good at the format is insane.
But yeah like I said ultimately they're just different beasts and can't be compared on that level super well |
evilford
07.23.21 | Thank u budgie, yes. That's an example of people playing good cards because they, by themselves, are good |
budgie
07.23.21 | a constructed deck with some card playsets that have very unique interactions is so much fun. that's a big component of magic i adore which is absent in singleton type formats and which is why singleton hasn't ever really appealed to me conceptually |
TheSpaceMan
07.23.21 | right, but in my experience (ymmv) thats not really a fringe case deck. its common. and that style would never work in commander so its not really dismissible in this comparison (again you brought it up so i know youre not dismissing it.) |
evilford
07.23.21 | I think part of what you're getting at spaceman is that modern has a defined metagame, and as such, there are going to be cards that are just better than others. There are a lot of mana dorks and good 1-drop creatures (ragavan, dragon's rage channeler etc) so 4 lightning bolt in decks that play red in most cases is going to be good.
That same logic cannot naturally be applied to a 99-card singleton format, simply in part because of the vast variety of cards and strategies that are used. So I agree, the same type of deck building would not necessarily work in commander, because the deck construction rules of commander are so vastly different. They are different beasts. |
TheSpaceMan
07.23.21 | yeah thats exactly it! like yall said, modern is competitive. commander's entire ruleset exists to allow synergies of cards that are usually impossible to work with in other formats (particularly one as high powered as modern). as you already mentioned the singleton rule lets you put a ton of auto-includes of the format (sol ring etc) and STILL let you put in wild commons that no one has ever seen before that work with your deck wonderfully. but the main thing is you always have an 8th card in your opening hand that is exactly what you're whole deck is built around... so thats imo where most of your synergy comes into play! idk its almost as if commander was designed with synergy in mind because of these rules, so its really hard for me to accept any other format having more of it |
TheSpaceMan
07.23.21 | side note, i drafted modern horizons 2 with some friends last weekend and that was a ton of fun! limited will always be a blast. got some cool pulls... chatterfang is dope as a commander player hehe i put him in my hapatra edh deck |
evilford
07.23.21 | Yeah I hadn't drafted since khans, but I drafted mh2 prerelease weekend. Was definitely a blast |
budgie
07.23.21 | there's more than modern & commander.. |
budgie
07.23.21 | plenty of synergies require consistency only offered by a playset, singleton in that sense is a nonstarter |
TheSpaceMan
07.23.21 | synergy and consistency are two different things and operate without eachother imo |
TheSpaceMan
07.23.21 | thinking of 99 unique cards minus lands that all synergize with a legendary creature is what most people find so enjoyable for the format |
budgie
07.23.21 | if you have a specific two or three card synergy it's very very rarely going to be utilized in singleton |
TheSpaceMan
07.23.21 | youre thinking in your format's ruleset! you literally always have access to a card that usually has passive effects (your commander). you now can draw into so many different things to play off that. just cause youre not fishing out your 1 single card interactions every game doesnt mean you arent getting off combos all the time |
TheSpaceMan
07.23.21 | plus, tutors are huge in edh for the exact issue you have with it. sometimes, you wanna fish the one card to complete the synergy.
if you really wanna think about it in terms of packages, think of it like you having 10+ synergistic packages in the whole deck that all bleed into one another (whereas in modern you have one singular combo you wanna pull off). the whole puzzle of edh is getting them to work while 3 other homies try and do the same. |
Dedes
07.23.21 | Yeah with a massive deck it's going to be more difficult to get particular pulls but there's a large pool of tutors and card draw in most colors to make up for that. Modern definitely still has it easier in that respect however. |
Dedes
08.18.21 | It's bogles time boys
Idk why but the entire concept of bogles is hilarious to me
Whipping someone with a single overgrown frog fucking thing is the dream |
CaliggyJack
08.18.21 | Did my Eldrazi comment get deleted? why lmao |
Dedes
08.18.21 | Eldrazi comment? |
Dedes
09.08.21 | Iroas commander is now hated amongst my playgroup lmao |
evilford
09.08.21 | Bogles is annoying af
Ima rebuild burn for the 1000th time. Decks solid rn and super easy to play, played it for years |
Dedes
09.09.21 | Burn is stronk
My local metal plays a lot more red creature aggro tho
With like, Eidolon of the Great Revels, Soul Scar Mage, Manamorphose. That fun stuff. |
evilford
09.09.21 | My local meta is the wild fucking west
Everyone always on different decks |
Dedes
09.09.21 | I mean it keeps you on your toes at least. I'd rather have that diversity tbh |
evilford
09.09.21 | Yeah, it's definitely better than eldrazi winter |
Dedes
09.16.21 | I never played during that era, I suppose for the better.
I've never had a problem with eldrazi tron in my meta the few times I played against it but I guess Eye of Ugin really made the decks stacked. |
Dedes
11.15.21 | Guys I wanna make a new deck what do |
Dedes
12.14.21 | I made an Anafenza commander
Really good for a deck I made strictly out of cards I already owned but it undoubtedly needs improvement |
TheSpaceMan
12.14.21 | ohh neat! do you have a decklist anywhere? that commanders second ability can hose some ppls strategies |
evilford
12.15.21 | Anafenza the foremost, or anafenza kin-tree spirit? |
evilford
12.15.21 | Top 8d modern store champs with living end lol. My buddy ended up winning it with some Naya obosh nonsense. Blood moon can suck it |
TheSpaceMan
12.15.21 | blood moon is funny cause it wrecks expensive and greedy mana bases but kitchen table brews dont even blink |
TheSpaceMan
12.15.21 | also i have an obosh commander deck and its the most fun deck ive ever built imo. its basically damage stax which no one sees coming |
evilford
12.15.21 | Idk, my old kitchen table brews had some nonbasics in em. Granted they were pretty much all monogreen lol
I used to play blood moon decks and the same buddy who won store champs hated it. My how the turntables
Its just a cheap win imo |
evilford
12.15.21 | Like oh you just can't play magic now sweet I guess I win |
Dedes
12.15.21 | Anafenza the Foremost
I'll post a list but it's got a p nice amount of filler in it rn lol
Also in regards to Blood Moon I think even in some casual decks it can be a major inconvenience but in competitive it's a crippling strike |
TheSpaceMan
12.15.21 | again my perspectives entirely from EDH, but i think its a very fair way to keep people in check when theyre fetching shocks and shit. EDH is so ramp heavy since major land destruction is frowned upon, so i like stax pieces that remove an overwhelming mana base and incentivize running more basics. |
TheSpaceMan
12.15.21 | sweet dedes i wanna see it! i prefer lower powered lists anyways rather than just 100 staple cards of the color pie. uniqueness makes commander way more fun |
Dedes
12.15.21 | https://tappedout.net/mtg-decks/anafenza-guy/?cb=1639542236
I also had 3 other silly filler cards until I realized I miscounted and was at 103
Thank you deck list for saving me |
TheSpaceMan
12.15.21 | nice looks like some fun creature stuff. i'd throw in some more ramp since you're in green but cool deck |
Dedes
12.15.21 | Yeah that's the plan, I'd also really like to fix the mana base a bit since it can be a little rough to get stuff consistently.
Ngl making a deck out of preexisting cards made me realize how great their power level could actually be, i.e Search the Premises which actually netted me a good 6 or 7 cards. |
TheSpaceMan
12.15.21 | yeah 3+ color gets tricky. i personally think basics are better than comes-in-tapped duals. green has access to so many crazy good edh cards like rampant growth and cultivate and llanowar elves. i'd slot those in there since theyre cheap!
and yeah the only deck ive made of preexisting cards ended up being a pretty decent graveyard theme in black and blue |
Dedes
12.19.21 | Fuck yeah man
Simple mana dorks like Llanowar Elves or Elvish Mystic are so incredibly useful. Not a single deck can function at max capacity without a decent mana base but green screams for it. |
evilford
12.19.21 | 4-0 at fnm again with living end. Decks feels pretty good.
Got a team tournament coming up Jan 15th, pioneer/modern/legacy. Im the modern seat. Probably just jam it with living end. Maybe we finally win this one? |
Dedes
12.19.21 | Team tournament? |
evilford
12.19.21 | Yeah, 3-person teams. 1 person on pioneer, 1 modern and 1 legacy. The winning team is determined by which team has more matches won than the other. So if I win my match, and pioneer loses, then the winner of the legacy match determines who wins. If the first two players to finish on a team both win, then they win the match and it's over. Open communication with your team is allowed. U can show hands, ask advice etc.
Doing it with two of my best buddies. Pretty stoked. One of em move to KY a couple years ago and we were all big sad but he's flying back for the tourney. |
evilford
12.19.21 | It can be sort of stressful in a way cuz u don't want to let ur team down, etc. But we are all bro's so we just try to go into it with the understanding that mistakes happen and the primary goal to be to play our best and have fun regardless of outcome |
YoYoMancuso
12.19.21 | fun fact MTG actually stands for michael jackson - thriller |
