04.13.22 | They don't put metalcore bands in it because it's technically a hardcore subgenre and not metal |
Koris
04.13.22 | ^ they actually do include metalcore bands, but only when there’s more metal- than -core in their sound. That’s why bands like As I Lay Dying and Killswitch Engage are on there
Now, how that rule excludes bands like A7X or BTBAM? I have no fucking clue |

04.13.22 | Every single one of these bands is metal in one way or another. I genuinely want to know what criteria a band must adhere to in order to be added to Metal Archives. I like that site, but this seems like some elitist bullshit. |
alkostach
04.13.22 | There are already too many *core bands on MA. MA is not nearly strict enough when it comes to accepting bands. |

especially as they appear hell bent on disqualifying bands that are 'too prog' yet include Rush, like... what?
basically they do what they like, which I suppose is their right... just comes across as unnecessary or potentially elitist to onlookers / lurkers |

u take that back flutes are awesome |

04.14.22 | basically anything popular amongst wannabe scene mallcore metalheads doesnt make the cut, even if it's obviously metal. how someone can jam 18 and think it's anything but metal is astounding...

alkostach
04.14.22 | "even if it's obviously metal"
how you can even argue with someone who says limp bizkit is metal? obvious stuff is obviously not obvious. limp bizkit is metal, even writing that makes me wanna break down in tears and laugh like a madman. ahahahahaha, wtf, limb bizkit is metal aaaaaaaaaaaaaahahahahaha
and together with slipknot, system of a down and avenged sevenfold they form the big four of modern retardation metal. ahahahahahahaha |
porcupinetheater
04.14.22 | ^ See this is what you're arguing with when you argue with metalheads
Not worth the thought it takes to get hot and bothered about it. Also genre arguments are boring and MA's only good for finding underground shit so why care about any of this in the first place |
BAT
04.14.22 | i've said it before and i'll say it again : metal archives gives more attention to whitepower noise/synth bs than it did any band from the myspace era. and 80% of the albums i've downloaded as a result of browsing MA, sucked |
StormChaser
04.14.22 | I'm fine with not including most of these acts, a pretty horrible list if I'm being honest
Rammstein is definitely metal tho |
alkostach
04.14.22 | >80% of the albums i've downloaded as a result of browsing MA, sucked
man, there are like millions of albums on MA. it's obvious that most of them are pieces of shit. It's not a recommendation site, it's a database.
a database of arbitrarily defined metal. you don't like their definition of metal and important metal influences or don't agree with their rules - you go somewhere else. unless you've got too much hate to waste - then waste it on MA, i don't mind. |
BAT
04.14.22 | "man, there are like millions of albums on MA. it's obvious that most of them are pieces of shit. It's not a recommendation site, it's a database."
yeah its not good for finding bands, correct.
"you don't like their definition of metal and important metal influences or don't agree with their rules - you go somewhere else. "
correct, i recommend researching record labels and reading liner notes instead. |

and of course, the Botswana scene (Skinflint, Wrust, Crackdust) |

04.14.22 | What they choose to include and exclude does lead to some head scratching for sure. Around the time I joined sput I had also joined their forum although it was seldom I really used it much. When I started my review site in like 2010 though I had started up almost exclusively reviewing demos that people would send me of their own bands via the MA forums. I loved doing that and was planning on starting it up again last year. I made the mistake of commenting on a thread about Louis CK on there though and ended up getting banned over some kind of weird crusade that started over me stating that I thought he was funny lol. Like immediate ban without even engaging in any kind of argument and then the mod made all these snide remarks implying that I'm a sexual predator or some nonsense along with some other weird editing of my comments.
It sucks because the site can be a great tool and honestly back in the day I found a lot of really cool albums and had some solid discussions. It also seemed like the amount of members submitting music to review that was actually surprisingly good most of the time was endless as well. Unfortunately though the site has plummeted into some weird divided cesspool where all of the sides suck and when someone decent pops up they end up leaving quickly because it reeks of suckage right when the pages load

Mortiis, Wongraven, Die Verbannten Kinder Evas) and some non-metal bands (ex. Rush, Arditi, Stille Volk) included arbitrarily as they have been seen by the staff to be historically relevant to the metal scene. We are no longer including any more non-metal exceptions. Do not ask."

04.14.22 | they also didn't accept BMSS but accepted EdelweiSS, apparently |
BAT
04.15.22 | @alko to be honest, that issss probably the most efficient way of going thru the site lol.
annnd never got into posting on their forums/reviews buuut reading through the edgy elitist reviews still gives me some chuckles. most of my problems with MA stem from the antipunk/gatekeepy stuff: thrash evolved out of hardcore and pretty much every extreme metal genre evolved out of thrash. buuut i just wish there was an actual database of every local 90s/00s numetal band, could've been [even more of] a comical goldmine |
combustion07
04.15.22 | They really should accept all of the ultra meathead roid level hated bands just for the quality enraged reviews that would ensue. There are definitely plenty of hilarious takes on there.
Also using the random band button often can be a window great for viewing just how extremely cringe and cheese filled metal can be at times. I had a field day clicking that button a ton during bouts of boredom back when they added it lol |
Egarran
04.15.22 | But it's a great feeling when you love an album and discover it has lots of positive reviews on MA. I'm a big fan of elitism when it shares my opinions.
Also I can probably find Rammstein reviews on other sites. |
arf
04.15.22 | There's metalmusicarchives.com (which is affiliated with progarchives.com, the go-to site for prog) and spirit-of-metal.com. Both are more open about inclusion (they include even e.g. Hällas). But when you compare the number of entries: MA has 157052 bands and 476616 releases; MMA has 38794 bands and 170067 releases; SoM has 113759 bands and 378597 releases. |
TheSonomaDude
04.15.22 | my band got rejected twice because, of what turned out to be, there were too many ambient "non-metal" interlude tracks. i asked why Burzum was allowed when half of their albums are ambient, and though they never responded, my band was added to the site the next day. i guess "real" metal cant have ambient interludes?
my friend has a black metal band and they've been banned due to being "too lo-fi". i've seen bands that were definitely metal get rejected for having "too much hardcore/crest influence" like wtf. |
Brabiz
04.15.22 | Avenged Sevenfold should definitely be on there. City of Evil and Nightmare are unquestionably metal albums |
RunOfTheMill
04.15.22 | Praying Mantis |
Koris
06.21.23 | So it looks like The Human Abstract have been included on the site recently. That makes me wonder what could happen with some of the other excluded metalcore bands, seeing as THA aren't the type of band who would normally be added to the site |

06.21.23 | With the amount of metalcore bands on the metal archive, it’s actually very strange that a lot of these aren’t included. Again, A7X especially. I think ABR is on there now though? Can’t remember |
Koris
06.21.23 | The Acacia Strain just got added too, but specifically because of Failure Will Follow |

06.21.23 | I've had a band blacklisted for being not-metal, then added when the album was re-released under a new name years later. it's a bunch of hogwash but at least it's useful hogwash. |

06.21.23 | "more like some mccore kids snuck their way in and their degeneracy just hasnt been found yet"
our generation of elitists dubbed it 'mallcore.' |
TheSonomaDude
06.21.23 | System of a down is blacklisted for being "mallcore". do they know what that even means? i genuinely think they just hate shit that's too popular. i had a dream one time they removed Metallica and i actually checked when i woke up to see if that actually happened, because it would not surprise me if they did. |
Koris
06.21.23 | They used to have Suicide Silence and FFDP on the archives a long time ago, but then removed them. Presumably because of the backlash or something like that |
BAT
06.21.23 | i've bought meshuggah shirts from hottopic they oughta be blacklisted |
TheSonomaDude
06.21.23 | 'and 80% of the albums i've downloaded as a result of browsing MA, sucked'
this is pretty true. i've found some pretty awesome unknown bands on MA that i love even today, but a big chunk of the bands i've checked out were legitimately terrible. out of time, drummer cant drummer, singer cant sing. i've found some great "so-bad-it's-good" metal on MA, mostly basement black metal. |
Koris
06.21.23 | @BAT: You know what's funny about that? According to Metal Archives, Meshuggah have been added only on the basis of Contradictions Collapse |
BAT
06.21.23 | lmfao, that's embarrassing
and yeah when i was mass downloading anything i could find i'd be searching up shit like 'raw black metal' on MA and out of the 50+ bands i checked out the only one i can remember is 'Antaeus' |
ToSmokMuzyki
06.21.23 | i dubbed it mccore bc its what mcdonalds would publish if they were a record company |
Koris
06.21.23 | @BAT: it doesn't even make sense tbh. Even if we were to go with the "no djent" rule the site has, Meshuggah weren't even a proper djent band until the Nothing/Catch 33 era. DEI and Chaosphere are more prog/groove/thrash if anything |
SomeCallMeTim
06.21.23 | A metal website removing Meshuggah from its records for not being metal would be a great way to void any of that site's legitimacy |
BAT
06.22.23 | 'mccore' brings my mind towards stuuf like black eyed peas/ed sheeran
and yeah 90s meshuggahs fairly thrashy for sure, i did used to browse MA pre-periphery and don't think they had any sort of defense for its inclusion. think it used to just be labeled 'extreme metal' or something like that lol. either way stuff like slipknot/korn on paper have some of the most consistent high-gross tours of any metal bands yet are blacklisted, yet stuff like motley crue[also a touring staple] is a-okay lmao. |
porcupinetheater
06.22.23 | Yo metal archives is mostly good for checking weird band photos and finding out if your new fave black metal band are Nazis, getting bent out of shape that your favorite superact didn’t make it into the stinkiest gated community of all time ain’t the look |
