102 Sputnik LOVES // 3000_Wells
Recently binged my way up to 3000 ratings and figured a milestone was in order. Would have done an alltime top 100, but I did that on 2000 ratings and not long enough has passed since then for that list to pose many interesting developments, so instead I've pooled my favourite 102 releases from ratings #2001 to #3000 and ranked em. AND! Positivity! Set out to reorientate myself and find and lose inspo and reconnect with my basest instincts and sniff out things I've undervalued and [um] lay down 102 things I love about sputnik. These were done in a random order with varying levels of thoughtfulness and the exact levels of positivity are consequentially very inconsistent *but it's the effort that counts amirite*. Yay. |
102 | | Hiperson bildungsroman
[deeply emotive Chinese indie]
So first and foremost, the time has come to reveal that - yes - alamo omala obama lmaoa ALAMO it is you and i love you always you are the pearl of the sputnik. Keep doing it (me) like you do |
101 | | Sleigh Bells Texis
[noise pop / pop pop]
Love everything to do with the absolutely bizarre conjunction of users who bonded over this record lol, tryly blessed scenes |
100 | | Trophy Scars Bad Luck
[blues / emo / post-hardcore]
Love this ridiculous fucking band and and their weirdo legacy on this site, forever real ones |
99 | | Bowery Electric Bowery Electric
[shoegaze]
I love how big how big the features tab is and how frequently it changes. Site gains and loses identities overnight, and yet it's the same old game of roulette between the same three frequently platformed genres. It is a brand. |
98 | | Dios Trio High On Bikes
[math rock / cute twinkly high energy midwestern shit]
and I love how small the soundoffs tab is. keep that vox pop suppressed yo |
97 | | Killing Joke Night Time
[post punk]
Love the sputnikmusic user who makes puns and also has the sexiest ANATomy huh who could that be |
96 | | Perturbator Dangerous Days
[synthwave / GAMING MUSIC]
You are all filthy fuckin gamers and I am convinced that this is the basis for 75% of sput's electronic predilection and I love that |
95 | | Shpongle Tales of the Inexpressible
[psybient]
Love CalculatingInfinity, realest of the real and keeper of all the most carefully indexed, practically viable and readily available keys. A champ amongst champs, probably one of the users I have the most far-reaching and consistently great memories of. Never change |
94 | | Lovesliescrushing Bloweyelashwish
[shoegaze / ambient]
Love being able to live life in the security that ajcollins15 will never review this album from this decade before he was born. Also love to live life in constant terror of his next wave of mockeries of the ever ailing English language the rest of us sorry pseudjournos cling to with increasingly diminishing increments of hope. Never a dull moment :[ |
93 | | The Raveonettes Chain Gang of Love
[noise rock / rock n roll / indie]
Love that city pop has a level of underground fandom that has neither waxed nor waned in any serious capacity since I swung in, save for an enjoyable upshot of Taeko Onuki ratings. Love this pasty hipster rocknroll shit album also mmm ohh we go together |
92 | | Bohren und der Club of Gore Black Earth
[doom jazz]
"Uh Lupe Fiasco > Kanye West, you can screenshot or save or what have you, I am prepared to battle all with my robust wits and mild fury." love this probably polemic quote from sputnikmusicontrib MarsKid and hope to one day feel angry at it even though it is probably on some level true idk it's been over a decade since I heard Lupe when will people stop listening to Kanye will I be listening to Kanye more or less when this happens thank you Mars for these prompts |
91 | | Lali Puna Faking The Books
[indietronica]
Love NEEKAFAT lmao eww what a dweeb hug me |
90 | | Limited Express (has gone?) perfect ME
[noise fucking rock / saxophone hardcore / dub]
Love DEWI, the most chivalrous gentleman on sput who somehow plays in the most punkrawk band on the site - get your ass and/or band to the UK, and bring some dried manta with you!!! Love everyone in Dewi's nakama also, they are the BEST |
89 | | BUCK-TICK Kyokutou I Love You
[alt rock / shoegaze / post punk]
Love all BUCK-TICK fans on this site except jasdevi (take a bath and clean ur glasses and I shall love you outside the guise of BUCK-TICK fan), your strength and fixation give me strength and fixation. Also love that I accidentally discovered BUCK-TICK from a random sputlist from a user I have never come across again ever. Also love BUCK-TICK. |
88 | | Iosonouncane Ira
[post industrial / post rock]
Love that people's impatience for long album lengths is gradually waning, even if this great change is mainly directed towards not particularly great records of recent! Hey, we move! |
87 | | YAYA KIM a.k.a YAYA
[art pop / cabaret]
[comment that makes demon feel appreciated] |
86 | | Cornelius Fantasma
[shibuya kei and every other genre also]
Love the stupid site drama hyperwar mania whateverfests that occasionally make membership so entertaining (part of me secretly believes that sputnik peaked with trebor's Tony Danza review and Rest). It has been a long time since a shit scene band staged a weigh-in here, makes me think we may have lost our way. |
85 | | Xiu Xiu OH NO
[chamber pop (cool creep kind not flaccid artfuck kind)]
Love porcupinetheater, the most swoonable swashbuckling penchampioning enlightening ex-contrib reprobate that ever there was. Sharpen my mind and inbue me with your fire ! |
84 | | Haruka Nakamura Grace
[ambient / folk / field recordings / indietronica]
Love the inconsistent but never-not-present levels of attention that Sput users' music get - glad there can be some sort of almost-scene there. Glad to see Domestic Terminal currently deriving some form of material benefit from this even if their style of music does next to nothing for me. Love that CHAT PILE are fuckin killing it out there, cannot wait for y'all to hear their new shit next week. Yes! |
83 | | GridLink Longhena
[grind]
something something parksungjoon curator of good recs |
82 | | Atari Teenage Riot Delete Yourself!
[digital hardcore]
something anything ghandhilion curator of great recs. there are no other rec users no not Havey |
81 | | betcover!! 時間 (Jikan)
[alt rock + ideas]
Love feeling the beautiful feeling of there being as many album reviews that I should definitely write for valid reasons as I have energies to write them, and then proceeding to squander all available impulses on a fit of hyperproductive shitposting. Love finding those energies return anyway later on |
80 | | Orbital Orbital 2
[techno]
Love sput's cuteweird small techno fandombubble AS GATEKEPT BY PARK, made great by Trif and fuelled by Hyperion < 3 ~TO BE CONTINUED~ |
79 | | Brutal Truth Need to Control
[grind]
Love that Boney has somehow carved out a niche of being the only person on this site not named porcupinetheater who is explicitly Into Country and has recs for and opinions about Music In General that are occasionally worth paying attention to. That accolade might be a poisoned chalice, but props for downing it |
78 | | Low The Curtain Hits the Cast
[slowcore]
LOVE THAT SLOWCORE IS GETTING A GENRE TAG |
77 | | Low I Could Live in Hope
[slowcore]
LOVE THAT SOME OTHER GENRES, SOME OF WHICH MATTER, ARE ALSO GETTING GENRE TAGS |
76 | | Jang Pil Soon 나의 외로움이 널 부를 때
[folk pop]
LOVE the Temple love the secret masked templepeople scurrying around in plain sight doing sneaky sexy templethings |
75 | | The Cure The Head on the Door
[new wave]
Love that the last two yrs have seen userbase preference on zak vs. Doof (for best/worst brit boomer) take a straight 180. RIP Doof, you had a good run for a while |
74 | | Japanese Breakfast Jubilee
[indie pop]
Tbqh love that March Madness has only ever been won by absolutely top bois for as long as I can remember and probably longer. Say what you will about sput, it has great taste in CHAMPIONS |
73 | | Lee Jung Hyun Let's Go to My Star
[trance / k-pop]
Love Jesper he is cute OwO |
72 | | Lamp For Lovers / 恋人へ
[shibuya kei]
Love Steak he is cute OwO |
71 | | Springtime (AUS) Night Raver
[noise rock / post punk]
Love how the storytelling on this record was powerful enough to temporarily kill SoTD. Oof. |
70 | | Dream Dolphin Love Eating Alien
[acid techno / breaks / new age]
Love that Song of the Day is back! One of sput's best collaborative traditions, not to be taken for granted! Huge kudos to Pangea for resurrecting it |
69 | | The Prodigy Experience
[breaks]
Love that Sinternet somehow defeated the JeffreyBigglestein and his gang of who(???)s without a single instance of direct confrontation, and also love that he chose to leave the majority of Leddsledd's decent taste inclinations intact during their Versailles sessions. Love also also that no-one else was spared in the slightest. |
68 | | Bruce Springsteen Nebraska
[americana]
Love Drifter! He is so cute and mostly unspoiled! Have never come across someone so a) over this site b) present c) wholesome in presence, but this is wasted on me because I'm over it. Love the children of his fertile chicken society also. |
67 | | Faye Wong Fable
[art pop / downtempo]
Love BLOC the only sput rymboi real enough to have rated this 50% masterpiece |
66 | | The For Carnation The For Carnation
[slowcore]
Love Icebloom when he POSTS and posts indie sadunclecore not indie dadcore huh nice good |
65 | | Blue Planet Corporation Blue Planet
[goa trance]
Love that trance is the most underdiscussed electronic genre on sput by a steep margin. Love how UnCool trance is. Loving trance and anyone cool enough to love it |
64 | | Dream Dolphin Atmospheric Healing
[new age / ambient trance]
Love how 99% of this site gives absolutely zero fucks for new age. This is sad!!! but more inexplicably cogent than it is sad somehow |
63 | | Kendrick Lamar To Pimp a Butterfly
[hip-hop]
Ditto 53 but for this. Love that this came out around the same time as Holy Vacants and, sput being sput, it was the latter hype train I cashed in on instead. No regrets but damn y'all have lead me down some rabbitholes in this time. |
62 | | Discordance Axis The Inalienable Dreamless
[grind]
Love all grind fans on sput. Potentially my fav realm of the heavysput community |
61 | | 16 Horsepower Sackcloth 'n' Ashes
[gothic fuckin country]
Love the meme of this site's recentish country/country-pop/emo country/nu-alt-country takeover, and how a handful of worthy souls here have stepped up to the occasion and proven to me that in spite this evidence to the contrary, good country does after all exist. Love and despair for the trash others have platformed here |
60 | | Blanck Mass World Eater
[electro post industrial vvvoom]
Love that I stole this when it was originally Pon's secret santa and love that I don't believe he has ever consumed it because he is extremely lovably shit :] x |
59 | | Michael Jackson Thriller
[music]
Love Yolove Yolove Yolove Yolove Yolove Yolove Yolove Yolove Yolove Yolove Yolove Yolove Yolove Yolove Yolove Yolove Yolove Yolove Yoylove Yoylove Yoylove Yoyolove 良いお年を!!!!!! |
58 | | Moreru itsunohini...
[noisecore]
love yall and your emo bullshit |
57 | | Piana Muse
[glitch pop / ambient pop]
Love Ayumi Hamasakigate and both Steak and Arche for the good work they did for it (three cheers for 評価boi). Love both individually also ! |
56 | | Hybrid (UK) Wide Angle
[breaks]
TRIFOLIUM WHAT HAVE YOU DONE TO MY *HEART* |
55 | | Asian Glow Stalled Flutes, means
[emo]
Love is a mixtape |
54 | | Trophy Scars Darkness, Oh Hell
[post bluescore]
Love minushuman - where is that beautiful fella and how is he doing? |
53 | | Burial Untrue
[garage]
Love how specifically I remember Kindred sitting on the features tab when I first joined the site and how for whatever reason I never jammed it until last year, probably because it had the weight of 10 yrs of mythology-I-had-seen-form-in-real-time hanging over it and I didn't need to hear any real music to validate that further - yet it lived up!! Untrue is good too. |
52 | | Fushitsusha Live II
[very noise rock]
Love that this site grew out of metal/skramz fandoms but that an enjoyable proportion of the userbase still gets freaked around immodest feedback/noise levels and overt lack of structure. m/ poser fucks |
51 | | Mondo Grosso Big World
[jpop (all of them)]
Love all the people I've hung with in person from Sput - I always find it a little awkward at first putting a face to a username, but everyone I've met has uniformly been absolutely great to be around irl (too bad all of you are in other continents :((( UK gang where are you !!!) |
50 | | Rolo Tomassi Where Myth Becomes Memory
[math postcore]
With the exception of a few anomolous dipshits and a few less anomolous hangouts (most of which are core- or warpedtour- adjacent HMMM), I love that Sputnik is a vastly more open minded, accepting and (uh I guess) progressive place than it was when I originally joined. I love that homophobia is out, that transphobic users are mostly viewed as shitstains on the community and that, well, if misogyny is proving a tougher fever to sweat than it might be for ye olde hive of boydisasters, then at least the playing field has shifted in the right direction - and I love this especially because absolutely none of it would have been conceivable back in the golden age of KILLposting (pure as that man's heart may have been). I feel this is something that has shifted particularly visibly over the last 3ish years (thanks #whorecoregate), and it's a relief to be writing on a platform where we're no longer promoting fascists and objectifying women on the very top level. No time for self-congratulation though - onwards and upwards. |
49 | | Kasra Ski Mask
[drum and bass]
Love how precocious Ryus' sputcareer has been since day one, and how this energy is now split between solid recs, cringeposting on perceived cringe, and candidposting on Bladee. Invested in the futures of all three of these avenues |
48 | | Dream Dolphin 月の癒し、海の魔法
[acid trance]
Love that the Saga of Tentenko taught me not to bother repeating the same strategy for Dream Dolphin. Also don't love this because she was a legitimately great artist :[ |
47 | | Nick Cave and Warren Ellis Carnage
[chamber cinema songwritery stuff]
Have a few reservations about this, but mostly love how much of a constant this site was for me either side of my moves from the UK to Japan and back again. Community interaction = yes yes, but also those two years were probably the least creative period of my life so far in most regards, and it was a blessing to channel some measure of that energy into however many reems of backhanded prose. Thanks for weathering my drone. |
46 | | Citrus Pits Are the Pits (25 Gold = Rare = Debris...
[shibuya kei / twee pop]
(*sigh*) I LOVE HAVEY for this record and this record alone yes that is all there is to this please look away. Your list was deeply funny and stirred my funnynerves. Now fuck off back to the cosmos |
45 | | Low Things We Lost in the Fire
[slowcore]
Love (and am also quite sad) that sput disappearing from the Wayback Machine means that so much of our past awfulness can lie buried forever. Had a purge of a few of my older lists and comments, and yikes baby yikes |
44 | | Flipper's Guitar Doctor Head's World Tower
[shibuya kei]
Love that 2020s sput's version of the early '10s "Bruh im metal for life but dont get me wrong bjork is a goddess" is "I will listen to milquetoast contemp indie shite all day every day, but you cannot touch me for my personality is sourced 110% wholesale from Pet Sounds and I will never draw a correlation between cornballs past or present lest I crumble in to hipsterish nothing dust". Also deeply hate this. |
43 | | Wolves in the Throne Room Two Hunters
[atmoblack]
Love that time someone made a cereal list and each and every commenter had a sufficiently dreadful take to nearly put me off breakfast full stop for life |
42 | | Masakatsu Takagi Kagayaki
[neoclassical new age chamber stuffs]
Love listening to music in my sleep - the only discourse to be had on this is Not Interesting, but there's still not enough of it!! |
41 | | George Harrison All Things Must Pass
[rock]
Love Jom, the cool dad I never knew I needed. No elaborate :[ |
40 | | Takeshi Terauchi and the Bunnys This Is Terauchi Bushi
[surf rock]
Love that feeling you get when you unearth a forgotten gem with (usually) 50-200 ratings on rym, head over to Sput and find that it barely exists. Viva viva |
39 | | Skee Mask Pool
[IDM / techno / breaks]
Love the righteous gang of good bois who came together last year to put this enormous biggood album on the traditionally unreadably awful Users' List. Great work yall, special props to Ryus for sustained plugging |
38 | | Astrobrite Pinkshinyultrablast
[shoegaze]
Remember that thing Ryus discovered that we've all forgotten about where you can filter your ratings chart with artwork images mmm yeah LOVED that!! |
37 | | Xploding Plastix Amateur Girlfriends Go Proskirt Agents
[big beat]
Love the participant gangpeople of every discord-patented MUSIC PARTY i've been around for, enjoyed each and all and every! good jams good folks |
36 | | Thinking Plague Moonsongs
[avant prog / RIO]
Love zany floaty moonboi robertsona his thoughts are crepuscular rays through ur mindsmoke catch them if you can |
35 | | The Flashbulb Kirlian Selections
[breakcore]
Love shapes and squares of many different sizes who the fuck is normaloctagon |
34 | | Bowery Electric Beat
[trip hop / shoegaze / ambient]
Love this site's undying devotion to trip-hop. Probably the most open gateway for rockists getting into electronic music - well to everyone keeping it open |
33 | | Paik Satin Black
[shoegaze]
Love shoegaze love how many gazers of completely different sets of interest sput has love every shoegaze thread that isn't Loveless |
32 | | Material Girl i85mixx21-22
[experimental hip-hop]
Love anyone this record spoke to |
31 | | xanopticon Liminal Space
[breakcore]
LOVE THE DELETE BUTTON |
30 | | D'Angelo Black Messiah
[soul]
Love JUSTJOE forever and always now and forever always where are you why did you kill me in my dream last night |
29 | | The Wrens The Meadowlands
[indie]
Love every sadboi except |
28 | | Jang Pil Soon Soony 6
[folk pop / downtempo]
Loved and sometimes still love pushing archival write-ups for albums that never really had any kind of following here. It's exhausting in the long run and inconsistently rewarding, but I've spent enough time on staff directing a significant chunk of my output to stuff that anyone could tell was always going to get attention here. Unless they particularly grab me (upcoming Chat Pile!!!) or need taking down a peg, I want to spent less time covering the same Online Music Happenings that are happening everywhere else on the internet at the same time. I think it can be interesting/worthwhile if we as a site have a distinctly different take on them (e.g. any Windmill scene review not written by Rowan), but I'm not vibing being the boi to rep that quite as much. More exploration, more important archival writes and better, nicher musicpromo to come hopefully |
27 | | Belvedere Fast Forward Eats the Tape
[skate punk / melodic hxc]
Love snotty techy skate punk mmmyesduh |
26 | | Black Sabbath Master of Reality
[metal]
Black Sabbath Master of Reality Love what metal did for my character development. Tbqh where would any of us be without metal. There can be no personality until you have metaled and then grown out of it |
25 | | Cynic Focus
[progtechdeth]
Love that Cynic and Rush bandwagoning here isn't nearly as insufferable as it was 10 years ago. Cannot wait to see this treatment spread to Opeth! |
24 | | Burial Kindred
[garage]
Love the constant looming suspense of a random site crash |
23 | | Teenage Jesus and the Jerks Teenage Jesus and the Jerks
[no wave / noise rock]
Love that the sput charts aren't weighted by votecount, meaning 1) it's easy to find random gems (/underrepresented scene-definers) from the charts and 2) the more you hype something with low votes that you found, the higher the chance of an immediate average drop and subsequent decharting. It's a precarious life, seize it while it lasts. |
22 | | Joni Mitchell Blue
[folk]
Love that this skramzy sweaty boi-site has pushed me towards a small handful of music albums I can bond with mum over yes thank you |
21 | | The Field From Here We Go Sublime
[min techno]
Love that electronic entryism is (very slowly) on the UP here |
20 | | Wipers Youth of America
[punk / post punk / noise rock]
Love the little shit who recommened me this very great album, I believe some call him """Pheromone""" |
19 | | The Prodigy Music for the Jilted Generation
[breaks]
Love the Build-an-Album game (big kudos to Mars for sustaining that shit, and pour one out to Storm for quitting while he was ahead on his), and LOVE that this forcibly exposed an encouraging proportion of the site to the wonders of breaks. Love breaks! |
18 | | The Beatles Magical Mystery Tour
[psych pop]
Love Sput Beatlemania and am continually a little confused that it's as existent as it is, but hooray for that! The Fab Four far surpass Radiohead as the best debateband in rock, always enjoy Beatles threads |
17 | | Trophy Scars Astral Pariah
[blues rock / gothic country]
Love the Best New Music tab and all the damage I've wrought on it. HATE that it only goes back for 99 pages, meaning that every time something is added to BNM, something is bumped off! Not cool! |
16 | | Fushitsusha Live I
[noise rock / psych]
Love how literally nobody here cares about live albums. Also no! |
15 | | Pig Destroyer Terrifyer
[grind]
Love that half the site is down with literally anything, on the sole stipulation that it contains literal boatloads of *riffs*. Also occasionally love riffs. |
14 | | Dream Dolphin The Seventh Dream
[breakbeat hardcore / drum and bass]
Love that Sput as a whole is a half-step behind every other weird self-cannibalising online music hype circuit out there, giving our hype (for better or worse) a vaguely specific flavour of its own. Everyone who has ever dredged a Fantano rating into otherwise respectable threads (especially the people who bitch about his entire personality and platform when it's negative but post innocuous comments anyway when it's post), you are on the wrong side of this. Don't ruin a good thing |
13 | | Underworld dubnobasswithmyheadman
[techno]
Love that this classic badass sleazetease of an album had absolutely NO REVIEW until literally 2020 what in the hell. Love that *some* people are being vaguely slowly definitely proactive at filling database gaps like this, keep plugging them holes! |
12 | | Doss Doss
[trance]
Love the (heart)(hard)(core) staff picky-poptimist gang, by which I mean granite and Wines and their stupendous student union representative BlushHip and sometimes sona when he IS cool enough 4 school! You are ALL handsome and righteous |
11 | | John Coltrane My Favorite Things
[jazz]
Love the carnage that SputRoyale has strewn over its 2 years of misery, boy I cannot wait to see how much worse this year will be |
10 | | Hartfield True Color, True Lie
[shoegaze / dream pop]
Love that some peeps here do genuinely deep knowledge of certain scenes/styles, and are usually their best, most approachable selves if you hit them up on the topic in good faith. Love also how some of these folks are also perfectly capable of snarky hellfire when occasional calls - love sixdegrees |
9 | | Hallucinogen Twisted
[goa trance]
Love + respect how much y'all stick together when someone kicks the hornet's nest. Half the reason I've spend so much time doing exactly that is (probably) that there's almost as much give as there is take, and plenty of both. Yes yes |
8 | | Shiner Lula Divinia
[post-hardcore / math rock]
I love how tenacious fandoms around specific cult classics can be here - love Shiner yes |
7 | | Brian Eno Ambient 1: Music For Airports
[AMBIENT]
I love how erratic sput news coverage is |
6 | | Les Rallizes Denudes '77 Live
[noise rock / psych]
and I love my shoutbox and all of your shoutboxes |
5 | | Arab Strap As Days Get Dark
[indie / slowcore]
I actually love everyone here |
4 | | Oxbow An Evil Heat
[noise rock]
especially love anyone who believed 5 |
3 | | Seiko Oomori Kintsugi
[j-pop]
This is too complicated to be a *love*, but I can't imagine the last few years or my whole experience of Japan/Japanese without their intersection with the reckless talent, intense performance style, tearaway lyricism, inspirationally desperate songwriting and ultimately irresponsible ambitions of Oomori Seiko, and in turn the intersection this has had with my writing here - probably over 10k words without ever feeling like I ever nailed *it*. The upshot is the handful of people here who did grasp *it* in spite of my clumsy writing or the ongoing dumpster fire, by no means specific to this site, of people shrugging off the fierce ideas of uncompromising [female] artists because they are articulated in unknown languages, both literal and stylistic, by a voice entirely indifferent to whatever passes as pleasing tonality in the Anglosphere. For anyone who heard it for what it was, I guess it was worth it. Greatest songwriter of our time - hope she gets her shit together from these last couple of years. |
2 | | David Bowie Station to Station
[cocaine musics]
mmmmtvc-one-fiveHERBIE CHROST I love you |
1 | | Yeule Glitch Princess
[glitch pop / ambient pop / noise pop / emo]
...and just when you thought I'd forgotten Mort, I |
|
