08.25.22 | Here is a quick explanation of the tier system (same as previously): It is entirely within the context of the artist e.g. I took Davis’s discography and divvied the albums up within six different tiers considering a normal(ish) distribution (with a much higher standard deviation). This gives you the lowest number of albums in the best/worst tiers, and the largest grouping of albums in the middle tiers. This is not to say that things in the “C-Tier” are average in a vacuum, per se, they are just average in the context of Davis’s discography.
• Albums in each tier are (very) roughly ranked according to personal preference. Moon emojis signify where score cut-offs lie.
• I did not include live albums.
• I only included studio albums whereupon Davis has a leading credit.
• I did include posthumous releases if they featured previously recorded and unreleased Davis material (e.g. Rubberband).
• I did not include compilation material that was mostly released elsewhere, even if reissued or re-recorded. | zakalwe
08.25.22 | Quality effort | bgillesp
08.25.22 | Cannot understand how Kind of Blue is 3/5, but Bitches Brew that high is very nice | tectactoe
08.25.22 | Just to be clear, KIND OF BLUE is a 3.5/5, and a relatively high-3.5 at that. (The moon emojis are cutoffs for ratings, so FILLES DE KILLEMANJAOR is the first 3.5 and everything thereunder is a 3.5 until you reach the next emoji marker.)
Were I basing this even remotely on technical skill, influence, staying power, or ubiquity, KIND OF BLUE would undoubtedly be higher. Truth is, I think it's a great album that lacks the unfettered emotion of his absolute best stuff. It's a fantastic album but it feels more like an exercise in precision than something "from the soul", if that makes sense. Just my opinion, though, obviously, and nearly ever jazzhead will tell me I'm crazy for putting it "only" in the A-tier (at the bottom, no less). | bgillesp
08.25.22 | Okay, I misunderstood your cutoffs, my bad. I’ll agree with you that it’s not in his top 3, maybe even top 5, from my personal taste so I’m not trying to disparage the list or anything. Still surprised you think it’s a 3.5 though, lol | WeepingBanana
08.25.22 | Jack Johnson is always gonna be my #1 with Silent Way and Sketches close behind. I also always felt ESP was pretty underrated | AlexKzillion
08.25.22 | this list is too good for this site | tectactoe
08.25.22 | God bless you 🙏 | bludngorevidal
08.25.22 | Great stuff, respect your choices, this is excellent work overall. My quibble of choice is Sketches of Spain: it's a a hallmark of the Third Stream movement and a lovely listen front to back. In the broader context of Miles' disco, though, I find its lack of jazz rhythms a bit of a downer. I'm not saying pop jazz bad, but... | bludngorevidal
08.25.22 | hence I prefer Blue Haze, even if it's a bit rougher and not as historically lauded | DadKungFu
08.26.22 | Good to see Nefertiti and FDK so high, highly respectable ranking overall | Sharenge
08.26.22 | I'm cool with Tutu I don't know what the fuck is wrong with people | Veldin
08.26.22 | Awesome list mate! | combustion07
08.26.22 | Never knew his discography was that big! I've only heard a few of his albums but Bitches Brew was by far my favorite | Uzumaki
08.26.22 | GOAT list | Veldin
08.26.22 | I had an asshole music appreciation teacher in community college make fun of me in front of the class for loving Bitches Brew. VHe proceed to play an excerpt from the album and go, “you actually enjoy this?”. Bellend | Gyromania
08.26.22 | Bitches Brew def belongs in S. | combustion07
08.26.22 | Yeah your music appreciation teacher sounds like a dick indeed! Mine was alright and turned me onto a lot of cool music I wouldn't have heard otherwise. Some of my fondest memories in high school were in that class. The kid who sat next to me brought lean everyday and would share it with me lol. High times and classical music ftw!!! Beethoven chopped n screwed! | tectactoe
08.26.22 | Wow imagine not loving BITCHES BREW and calling yourself a 'music appreciate' teacher lol wtf. | tectactoe
08.29.22 | And thanks for the kind words, gents 🙏🏼 | tectactoe
09.06.22 | Also willing to take recommendations for who should get the next tier list. Already have some other artists in the queue. | nash1311
06.19.23 | “Jack Johnson is always gonna be my #1 with Silent Way and Sketches close behind. I also always felt ESP was pretty underrated“
