| More Albums Like The Black Album?
You’re all going to laugh at me, but I swear this isn’t a joke. I got into heavy music via Slayer and Metallica when I was 13, and for the last 15 years I’ve listened pretty much exclusively to thrash, death, black, doom, grind etc extreme metal. I never bothered giving The Black Album a listen aside from hearing Enter Sandman everywhere, because I always knew it as Metallica’s “sellout” album, and presumed I wouldn’t like it.
I was wrong. A friend played me Unforgiven and Sad But True the other day, and I couldn’t believe it. The production was amazing, the vocals were better than I’d ever heard Hetfield before, and the songwriting was so much better than the “riff soup” approach of AJFA. I’ve been listening to nothing but The Black Album for the last week, and I can’t believe I missed out on it for all these years. It’s also a LOT heavier than I was lead to believe. I think I might like it better than the First Four.
Any recommendations for albums similar to the black album - heavy as balls but with catchy, powerful vocals all the same? I want to know what else I’ve been missing. | 1 | | Metallica Metallica | 2 | | Jay-Z The Black Album | 3 | | Prince The Black Album | |

12.03.22 | Ever hear Dozer’s “Beyond Colossal”? Maybe that’ll scratch the itch.
I’ll try and come up with a small list of some other things to try and hopefully you find something you like! | Koris
12.03.22 | This is gonna sound like an odd suggestion, but I'd recommend Into the Now by Tesla. That album rides a really good line between radio rock and classic metal, and has some very chunky/bassy grooves | Get Low
12.03.22 | Doesn't Weezer have one of these too now? | MoM
12.03.22 | TIL THE SWEAT DRIP DOWN THE JOWLS
Devin Townsend - Ocean Machine
Frank Carter & the Rattlesnakes - Blossom
Heaven & Hell - The Devil You Know
Red Fang - Red Fang
Agents of Oblivion - Agents of Oblivion
Also, not going for a “like the Black Album” thing as much as the catchy vocals/heavy thing | Koris
12.03.22 | ^ Ocean Machine and H&H are great suggestions for sure! Also Terria, while we're talking about the melodic side of Devy | Butkuiss
12.03.22 | This is the most positive interaction on a list of mine I’ve ever had in twelve years of sput and I expected it to be the most incendiary | Sabrutin
12.03.22 | can I make the obligatory A7X - Hail to the King comment? If you don't have a particular connection to the black album you may unironically get something out of a copycat | anode
12.03.22 | So first of all there’s really nothing like the black album. The production and songwriting on that album are iconic for a reason and despite what anyone says, it is a bit of a masterpiece in that regard.
All of alternative metal and avenged sevenfold in particular is basically just a rip off of this album. I recommend A7x self titled. Songs like almost easy, critical acclaim and afterlife get the closest to the sound of the black album imo. Some other jams that have some parallels to black album in sound and quality: drowning pool - love and war, System of a Down - highway song, godsmack - straight out of line and whatever, five finger death punch - the bleeding. That’s all that comes to mind right now | BookoftheFallen
12.03.22 | How about paradise lost draconian | Sabrutin
12.03.22 | that's a solid rec actually, and they could try out Icon if Draconian Times doesn't scratch the itch hard enough. Check both, really | Egarran
12.03.22 | Hadn't heard Icon in a decade until Source bumped it. Was surprised at how great it still is, even better than Draconian imo. | Muzz79
12.03.22 | I like this assessment of the black album. Still rules.
There’s a few of these that heralded a new era of modern metal that could be the same category. Fear Factory’s Demanufacture and Killswitch’s Alive or just breathing. Heavy as balls but with catchy, powerful vocals | heck
