| Seeing Better Lovers tomorrow
...opening for Underoath (with We Came As Romans and The Ghost Inside, two bands I don't especially care about, sandwiched in-between). Pretty stoked! (Even if it's the worst imaginable logistical setup!) List is some thoughts on the show's artists + random recent digs. | 1 | | Better Lovers God Made Me An Animal
I've probably listened to this 20 times since it came out (though that's obviously helped by the fact that it's only 15 minutes haha). Such a good melding of musicians here, and a nice return to some DEP-esque aggression after ol' Poochie's moodier solo output (which is wonderful in its own right), while also honestly a good bit more melodic (in a good way) than I was expecting--but still plenty chaotic. Definitely gonna be the highlight of the show for me. | 2 | | Underoath Voyeurist
I owe this one a relisten or two before tomorrow; I remember liking it more than "Erase Me," but I also really only return to "Pneumonia" routinely, so I should probably make another attempt here. | 3 | | Underoath Define the Great Line Special Edition CD+DVD
Their peak, in my opinion. Got to see them perform this (along with They're Only Chasing Safety) in full live a few years back, so I won't be bummed if they pick and choose, but hot damn will I go hoarse if they bust out some of these tracks. "Returning Empty Handed"/"Casting Such a Thin Shadow" is an all-time song combo; the term "epic" gets tossed around a bit too freely these days, but that pair is its very definition. | 4 | | The Ghost Inside Get What You Give
In trying to bone up for that midsection, picked this one at random, and thought it was actually pretty decent. I get the sense that if it had come out closer to my high school, KsE-fueled metalcore days, it'd be right up my alley; as it is, they're a fairly good acolyte. I'll probably give their latest a whirl before the show, as well, but if anybody else has a favorite from these fellas, feel free to drop a comment. | 5 | | We Came As Romans Tracing Back Roots
Another one chosen kinda haphazardly from the group's discography (guess I've got a thing for third albums?). Definitely a little on the poppy side of the spectrum for me, as far as this genre goes. But again, if there are any better offerings in anybody's opinion, shout at me. | 6 | | Deftones Deftones
Picked up the 20th(!) anniversary repress of this recently. It's obviously grown in fans' estimation over time, but anything that followed White Pony was bound to feel like a letdown at the time. By my reckoning, this thing's only gotten better with age, and "Hexagram" is such a tremendous opener it actually brings tears to my eyes. | 7 | | Captain, We're Sinking The Future Is Cancelled
10-year anniversary on this bad boy, and it's been far too long since I really intently listened to it. Shit holds up, and one of those albums where I surprise myself by singing along to lyrics I literally haven't even thought about in years. | 8 | | Pity Sex Feast of Love
Pretty much verbatim what I said above. | 9 | | Anthony Green Boom. Done.
Finally got ahold of this one. I'm not sure if it qualifies as a true "solo" album, but if so, probably the best one he's done. He's actually gonna be at a nearby venue at the end of August, so will probably make it out to that one. (Also got to see L.S. Dunes earlier this month, coincidentally at the same venue I'm seeing this UO/BL show. They were great.) | 10 | | Strange Ranger Pure Music
Kind of a curveball here, but this sucker's been on fallback repeat since it dropped last week. Lush, atmospheric, and fun stuff. | |

07.28.23 | Nightmare of an evening if you ask me, but I hope you have fun! | thecheatisnotdead
07.28.23 | Haha there will certainly be a couple hot and half-interested hours as a centerpiece, but the venue's right on the water, so at least I'll have a decent view. Might even be *that* guy and bring a book for the middle stretch, who knows haha | DadKungFu
07.28.23 | What’s wrong with the lovers you have now? | Emim
07.28.23 | UO is great live but since all their music post hiatus is terrible and they turned out to be selfish, greedy people I doubt in ever kicking any moment their way ever again. | Purpl3Spartan
07.28.23 | UO is lame yeah | thecheatisnotdead
07.28.23 | @Dad: They keep leaving!
@Emim: Uh-oh, did something happen? If I have an excuse to just leave after Better Lovers, lay it on me! (I paid like $15 for a lawn seat, which seems like a fair price for one set haha) | bellovddd
07.28.23 | that's a weird line-up. how does underoath sound these days? | Emim
07.28.23 | Spencer and Aaron are big douches now (always?) and they kicked out James under very suspicious circumstances. They still killed it when I saw them earlier this year, but yeah. | PotsyTater
07.29.23 | Dont they have like 4 songs | botb
07.29.23 | 4’s first two are pretty fun iirc | twlight
07.29.23 | They have 4 songs how the fuck are they touring? | thecheatisnotdead
07.29.23 | @Emim: Yeesh, well...we'll see, I guess.
@botb: Thankee!
@therest: Perhaps they play an opening set with an intermission? Maybe cover a Faith No More song? Iunno, folx, I ain't seen't it yet! | bellovddd
07.29.23 | ye they did james dirty. |
