10.17.23 | there should be a cheaply made physical chapbook/other-book about sputnikmusic (the goal is not to make big bucks)
I gotta imagine the breakdown would be:
Short history of the site
Reviews
Interviews
Essays/Blog Posts
Maybe: Pitchfork 500 (anyone remember this?)-ish chronological "Sputnik canon," probably represented by individual songs that are very sput-and-sput-only
What would go in there? Mostly the writing better be good: iconic reviews that suck might not be able to get in the book even though they helped shape Sputnik culture. Maybe some shitty ones tho
What is the best content sputnik has ever produced? |

what is this?
and yeah if i was going to write a book about sput it would be
a history
review styles, how theyve changed and how theyve been viewed by those inside and outside the community (including our sometimes tenuous place on wikipedia lol)
the outdated charm of the place
sputcore (eg why on earth does gospel have so many votes)

10.17.23 | The section of the book on Sputographics begs for an exploration of the interplay between genre and perceived quality. E.g., checking new releases, records which are metal-adjacent (particularly DM and BM) are frequently the richest shades of green/3.9/4.0+ whereas the most well-regarded non-metal albums (such as the recent Yeule) can't break through the 3.8 ceiling |

Sounds like a book I'd peruse.
Idea: a.) Start a Wikibook. Has most of the needed multimedia-tech to make a great online book. b.) Dredge through references to Sputnik already embedded in Wikipedia and refer back to the Wikibook. c.) Create a reference to the book everytime one reads a Wikipedia article about a band.
A Wikibook might get out of hand, though -- you'd have to figure out how to establish editorial control. If you want it, that is.
Just a thought. |

10.17.23 | lukewarm take = most of the best writing on Sput is in the end of year blurbs |

10.17.23 | take is straight up cold, i think it's pretty well understood that most of the quality writing here is saved for staff joint works |

10.18.23 | It would probably be 10 pages of heartfelt music writing, 490 pages of repeating the same microwaved minimal effort shitposting imagineable

shouldn't be too difficult |

10.18.23 | @demon: sandwichbubble’s yearly pie chart lists could be a source for that |

10.18.23 | "sputcore (eg why on earth does gospel have so many votes)"
Sputcore is DEFINITELY a thing... the first I thought of when seeing this thread. The meme culture too is a thing unto itself.
"literally who would want to read this except like 3 autistic people."
Done right, without being OTT introspective, with an aim to touch base with the wider landscape... and at least a presentable level of production quality, a publication like this has the possibility of cementing Sputnik as something worthwhile as a music source (at least to a wider public). |
MoM
10.18.23 | “ sint, do you know any good HP fanfics?”
I wanted to write one at one point that involved Harry being a plumber because it’s easy with magic and he’s depressed and muggle money still works, Ron suddenly wants to be a house elf called simply Weasley, Neville becomes a dark wizard, Hermione and Ginny fall in love, Hagrid dies at the hands of Neville Longestbottom |
AlexKzillion
10.18.23 | i think the year end top 10 staff and user lists are prob the best indication of what sputcore actually is (at least for stuff like 2010-present). lots of stuff really high on those that don't seem to get nearly as much traction elsewhere especially the staff ones |
TheManMachine
10.18.23 | it should be constructed in a really antiquated and anti-user friendly way so it matches the website |
VaruunZealot
10.18.23 | "sint, do you know any good HP fanfics? " I'm sure somebody was telling me about one in a thread the other day, randomly.
"cementing Sputnik as something worthwhile as a music source" I've seen them listed on wikipedia for album pages in the critical reception, but I think it's just whatever staff reviewer reviewed it at the time instead of like a Metacritic average from the album's Sputnik page. That's what turned me onto the site |
