Nin Ranked (aka The Rankward Spiral)

Includes Broken, Ghosts and The Slip, but none of the Remix albums.
1Nine Inch Nails
The Downward Spiral

Just pips The Fragile to the post by having a better closer. The atmosphere the whole album creates is just fantastic, from the claustrophobic songwriting of I Do Not Want This to the obscene catchiness of Closer and of course, the masterpiece that is Hurt, the album stands up there as probably my favourite of all time.

The Fragile

It's almost a shame to have to put this one second, because it's just on another level from every other NIN album. The album is more of a journey or even a soundscape than a collection of songs, and the fact that it took 5 years to make really shows with the smooth song transitions and absolutely perfect production.
3Nine Inch Nails
Year Zero

Broken just misses out as this is a lot more fulfilling as an experience, since it's a whole album rather than an EP. The mood of this album is more relaxed than most other NIN, but it's also sinister and spine-tingling in it's own way.
4Nine Inch Nails
Broken [EP]

Their most aggressive and full-on release, Broken stands as one of my favourite EPs of all time, although there are one or songs which just aren't particularly memorable - not bad by any means, I'd even go so far as to call them great, but they don't stand up to some of the other songs on the album (Wish, Gave Up and Happiness In Slavery are among NIN's best).
5Nine Inch Nails
Ghosts I-IV

There's far too much I could say about this album - all I'll say is that this totally disregards traditional songwriting convention, in a similar fashion to an unfocused version of The Flashbulb's Soundtrack To A Vacant Life. And I mean that in the best way possible. The problems are exactly what you might expect from a 4 disc, sprawling instrumental, but often they don't stick out over the mood journey that is the majority of Ghosts.
6Nine Inch Nails
With Teeth

Some really good songs, a bit of filler, and a fairly standard rock/dance/pop/industrial album as far as NIN is concerned. Definitely a good idea for a starting point if you're looking to get into them.
7Nine Inch Nails
Pretty Hate Machine

Too bland, containing some of Reznor's worst lyrics (his lyrics have got much better recently, but in their first few releases he was prone to sounding pretty childish), but fun still. Something I Can Never Have still stands as one of NIN's best slower-paced songs to this day.
8Nine Inch Nails
The Slip

One or two good songs, mostly average. I was annoyed when Reznor released this on CD a bit, because that validates it as a proper release rather than just a small gift to the fans, as it was originally (and probably still) supposed to be. Don't buy this, if you want it just download it from their website.
