10.01.09 | Damn, I haven't listened to 15 in a long time, might have to give it a spin. Karnivool rules based on their 09 release, but I haven't heard Themata |
stargazer76
10.01.09 | Agreed.
You could also try the early albums from Rush - 2112, Farewell to Kings or Hemispheres or even try Pain of Salvation - Remedy Lane. |
EVedder27
10.01.09 | yeah greg listen to chambered and get some king crimson. And if you haven't already get the new Karnivool album, it rocks |
breesuschrist
10.01.09 | there are way better albums from 8 9 and 10 |
Mordecai.
10.01.09 | 3 is pretty good, but the New Normal is so much better. |
greg84
10.01.09 | Yeah. Definitely I fall behind as for classic progressive records. I've heard some Rush albums though, and new Karnivool obviously. |
dankeyes11
10.01.09 | Devin Townsend
King Crimson
Jethro Tull
dredg
Cynic
the pax cecilia |
ToadsDontRead
10.02.09 | porcupine tree and dream theater |
Lions
10.02.09 | I'm going to second the dredg, pax cecilia, cynic, king crimson, and jethro tull recs. Also, some of the bands you listed have better albums. I'd suggest In Keeping Secrets from 8, In Absentia from 9, and Frances the Mute from 10. Otherwise, here's some more things I'd think you'd like:
Yes - Close To The Edge
maudlin of the Well - Bath
The Dear Hunter - Act II
Kayo Dot - Choirs Of The Eye
Gospel - The Moon Is A Dead World
Pink Floyd - Wish You Were Here
Opeth - Blackwater Park (if you prefer softer stuff, go with Damnation from them)
Mr. Bungle - California
Sleepytime Gorilla Museum - Of Natural History...
The Sound Of Animals Fighting - The Ocean And The Sun
Magma - s/t
Rx Bandits - And The Battle Begun...
Alright, that should give you a pretty broad overview of a ton of different sounds, both new and old. God, I love prog. |
greg84
10.02.09 | OK. I'll check some of these. I've already heard Mr. Bungle, Rx Bandits, dredg, Cynic and Opeth.
I don't agree with you on 8, 9, 10. These are my very personalized choices. Frankly, I can't get into anything before The Bedlam in Goliath as for The Mars Volta. And I agree In Keeping Secret... is a very good record, but not my fave from Coheed. |
ArtVandelay2
10.03.09 | You have to listen to Devin Townsend. Prob start with Ocean Machine.
Demians
Chronicles of Israfel
Sleep Parade
Children Of Nova |
Vooligan
10.03.09 | I suggest Sleep Parade and Jericco. Both are rediculously good. |
AnotherBrick
11.21.09 | the mayan factor - in lake 'ch
demians - building an empire
you'll fucking love these |
greg84
11.21.09 | I've already heard demians ... and I liked it, but not very much. I think they are capable of much more.
Thanks for recommending the mayan factor. I'll check it out asap. |
greg84
11.21.09 | And I'm not very impressed with Sleep Parade. I've known their music before. Out of Australian bands I prefer Dead Letter Circus. |
botb
11.21.09 | your music taste puzzles me. its as if you have discovered and listen to some outstanding music but just can't leave behind the cookie cutter mainstream bands that sound like everything else these days |
greg84
11.21.09 | Mainstream bands? Hmm. What bands do you call mainstream? I have difficulty distinguishing. I try to devide music on good and bad and I'll admit I like catchy tunes. The thing is that my taste is not very mainstream for this site. You probably haven't heard a lot of albums I've rated on this site. Mainly because they're very obscure here. For example, look at my last 5 ratings. |
greg84
11.21.09 | And this is from somebody who rated ra's albums so highly. I consider them pretty much mainstream, but yeah From One is a good album. Anyway, your taste confuzzles me as well. |
AnotherBrick
11.22.09 | ya man well you will definently like the mayan factor, discovered them a bit ago and havent gone a day now without listening to both of their albums...and seriously what the hell is wrong with mainstream? omgz its on the radio so it obviously sucks...no, |
AnotherBrick
11.22.09 | and if you like porcupine tree then check out abigai's ghost - Selling Insincerity
and one last rec for ya haha check out pure reason revolution - the dark third..they are an amazing progressive band with a very unique sound |
greg84
11.22.09 | I've no idea what's wrong with mainstream.
Thanks for the recs. Have you heard the Polish prog band Indukti? I've recently purchased their last cd Idmen and it's awesome. They regularly use violin in their compositions. Plus, they tend to add trumpets and synths as well. |
AnotherBrick
11.22.09 | i've heard their other album S.U.S.A.R. does idmen have Mariusz Duda singing again? |
greg84
11.22.09 | No. It has three other vocalists, one of them is Polish, but it's not Duda. Quite ironically though, the best tracks on it are instrumentals. Sansara, Indukted and Ninth Wave rank among the best songs of the year for me. Besides, the album is much heavier than S.U.S.A.R. |
AnotherBrick
11.22.09 | hell ya, you totally convinced me to check it out. have you heard of lunatic soul or quidam? lunatic soul is duda's side project and quidam is a pretty sweet polish band i found |
Jethro42
11.22.09 | @ Benzum: ''Egg'' is a good call, but not for Sputnik.
Classic prog rock is underrated on here. |
Jethro42
11.22.09 | oops...and I assume you meant Gong's ''Angel's Egg'' |
greg84
11.22.09 | Jethro42: Not only classic prog rock is underrated here. Stoner rock and non-mainstream hard rock as well.
AnotherBrick: Yeah. I've heard these bands, but not the whole cds, just some tracks on the radio (I live in Poland). Out of Polish bands, you should check out Rootwater and their last cd Visionism. They play groove metal and have a totally amazing vocalist who by the way gives the best vocal performance on Idmen. |
AnotherBrick
11.22.09 | haha i cant even imagine hearing bands like that on the radio and ya man im adding them to my list right now |

11.23.09 | ya man that rift was intense...you seem pretty fond of stoner/desert rock...whats one album you'd rec to someone who wants to get into that genre? |
greg84
11.23.09 | Wow. That's hard. Check out these cds in that order:
Clutch - Robot Hive/Exodus
Fatso Jetson - Cruel and Delicious
Unida - The Great Divide
