Prophet2009

Here its is, my top 20 albums of 2009, pretty much in order from what I listened to the most with some personal bias thrown in.
1Mono
Hymn To The Immortal Wind

Did you expect something else here? If you did you obviously don't know me.
But really, this is the album that perfected Mono's sound completely, even
though all their albums are masterpieces, this is the one to rule them all. I can't
wait to see where these guys go next, I really don't think they will attempt to
stick with this style and try and out do this record. Maybe just to shut up all of
you that say they make the same album over and over again. Favorite song:
The Battle To Heaven
2Animal Collective
Merriweather Post Pavilion

I'll tell you right now, at the beginning of the year this wouldn't have even made my
top 100, but after divulging into AC's back catalog and forcing myself to figure out
what is so good about this band I've come to really love this album and AC. This isn't
my favorite AC, actually it's probably my 3rd or 4th, but it's hard to deny that every
song on here is as close to perfection as possible. Favorite Song: Lion In a Coma
(yeah Lion in a Coma is the best song, get over it.)
3Portugal. The Man
The Satanic Satanist

Probably one of my favorite band's I've discovered this year. Even though this
and their debut are their only good albums, I still love this band. I've played
this record more times that I can remember and it has served as soundtracks to
many days of work, school and driving. It's so easy to pop on and listen to
straight through any time. Seeing them live further proved my love for the
band, especially when they jammed out songs from this in a completely different
way from the record. I'm interested to see how American Ghetto turns out
seeing as it's being release less than a year from this, hopefully they don't fuck
it up. Favorite Song: The Woods (although I could easy name the entire CD
minus Everyone is Golden, fuck that song.)
4Russian Circles
Geneva

I've always liked Russian Circles. They've always been that band that cut
out the bullshit of post-rock and just went balls out (at least before
Station). Geneva is a perfect blend of what I love about the band, the hard
hitters are nice and heavy while the more traditional post-rock songs are
beautiful and serene. This is another album that I played constantly since I
got it. Favorite Song: Melee
5Converge
Axe to Fall

....And rounding out the top 5 are the masters of metalcore, Converge.
These guys can't make a bad album, they're all too good of musicians. I
think the biggest thing I like about Axe to Fall is the flow of the record. The
first few songs are heavy as hell, the middle section goes into that sludgy
thing No Heroes was about, then the end is a new side of Converge.
Theres no filler to be found here. I think these guys will be showing us how
real metalcore is done until Bannon's voice dries up and their hands fall off.
Favorite Song: Dark Horse
6RX Bandits
Mandala

One of my most anticipated of the year. The Bandits come back without
their horn section and rock it prog style. I couldn't have imagined a better
record from these guys. Seeing them live was one of my worst concert
experiences ever unfortunately, but that doesn't take away from how much
I love this record. Favorite Song: Bled to Be Free (Operation)
7Mew
No More Stories

I never really got into Mew before this record, but I'm glad I did. This is
probably one of the most beautifully fun albums I've ever heard. Mew is my
go-to band for whenever I'm feeling down, and they always manage to put
a smile on my face. Favorite Song: Cartoons and Macrame Wounds
8Japandroids
Post-Nothing

One of the biggest surprises of the year. A guitar and drum duo making
some sweet music. I don't think this has left my car since I got it, perfect
driving music. Favorite Song: Heart Sweats
9And So I Watch You From Afar
And So I Watch You From Afar

Another post-rock band like Russian Circles that is taking the bullshit out of
the genre. A high energy record that never lets up. I'm looking forward to
their new EP, and hopefully they come state-side because I've heard their
live show is killer. Favorite Song: I Capture Castles
10Animal Collective
Fall Be Kind

I don't know how these guys do it. It's either the drugs that they're taking
or they really are the most creative guys ever. Two incredible records in
the same year, I didn't think it was possible but AC pulled it off. Panda
Bear 2010 AOTY, calling it now. Favorite Song: Like I even need to say it
