Tribute To The Captain

The death of Captain Beefheart has upset quite a bit, like more than I would expect an artist's death ever would. Anyways there are far too many sad tales floating around on sputnik so I'm just going to make a list in honour of the great Don Van Vliet.
5 Frank Zappa
Freak Out!

To say anyone really inspired Mr. Vliet is a little silly. To say anyone one matched him in the bizzare is even sillier. However Zappa and Vliet worked closely together and it is likely the result of Zappa that we know about Beefheart today.
4Captain Beefheart
Safe as Milk

This is not quite the insanity of Trout Mask Replica. However it is an incredibly good album. It is marvelously produced and features one of the tightest bands in history. Acid blues at its finest
3Captain Beefheart
Trout Mask Replica

This album is why listen to music. Hailed by media giants such as Peel and Groening as one of the greatest works of music in the 20th century. It is crazy, hard to listen to, nonconventional, painfully long and above all fucking insane and I wouldn't change a second on it. His masterpiece and without a doubt one of the best albums of all time.
2Tom Waits
Closing Time

This is not the tom waits album which sounds like a Captain Beefheart one. But I have listened to this more than any other album in the past couple of weeks
1The Talking Heads
Fear of Music

the batshit craziness did not die. Large portions of the less depressing side of post-punk were heavily influenced by the nonsensical lyrics yet sombre message found in nearly ever Beefheart album
